Conquering His Cold Heart
Chapter 446 - 446: Pity

A dark figure emerged from behind the trees.

Jerome wasn't completely sure who that scent belonged to until he saw that young man standing beside the tree while lowering his head. He just knew that he had just come across that weird scent yesterday night.

"Ah! Cillian, is it?" Jerome questioned that young man who looked terrified for some reason.

Cillian didn't dare to meet Jerome's eyes because he was already aware of who Jerome was. After all, he had met Jerome and the others during the full moon.

He simply nodded his head while fixating his eyes on the ground.

Jerome was slowly closing the gap between him and Cillian. He didn't want to startle Cillian away by being hostile towards him.

And while moving closer, he asked Cillian, "Why aren't you at your home, Cillian? It's too late for a young man like yourself to be roaming around alone."

Cillian didn't utter a word. He simply kept on staring at the road with his head held low.

Jerome, on the other hand, could hear Cillian's heart pumping so loudly that it sounded as if it was close to exploding.

However, rather than being suspicious that Cillian was probably involved in something bad and was terrified of being caught, Jerome felt concerned for his safety.

"Was someone after you, young man?" he asked in a worried manner. "Were you running from someone? Or were you just taking a stroll perhaps?"

Again, Cillian didn't speak a word. He was too shaken to be able to produce even a single word from his mouth.

Jerome was standing right in front of Cillian by now. He gently placed his hand on Cillian's shoulder, startling him and almost prompting him to run away.

However, Jerome's soothing and caring voice stopped Cillian from doing so.

"Boy, if someone is bothering you then you can confide in me. I am your Beta after all. And to protect people like you from any harm is my job. So, you don't have to be afraid of me. Just tell me what is bothering you and I will try my best to solve the problem for you."

Cillian's eyes instantly watered. This was the second time someone had shown sympathy towards him and was actually willing to help him.

"I…" He wiped his tears and sniffled a couple of times.

He had actually been lingering around the castle for the whole day. He wanted to meet Everard and ask him to help Ruby escape from Regulus' imprisonment. However, since he didn't have any pass, all he could do was wait around near the gate for Everard to appear.

Though that didn't happen, he was glad that he got to meet Jerome. He could ask Jerome to pass the message to the alpha.

"I want to ask you a favor," Cillian replied after finally lifting his head and gazing at Jerome's compassionate face.

Jerome instantly showed his willingness to help. "Of course. You can ask me anything. As long as it is in my power, I will help you with it."

Cillian looked down again and began to arrange his thoughts in his head. While asking for help on Ruby's behalf, he didn't want to get into deep trouble with the alpha. Though he had some hand in Ruby being captured, he was obviously afraid to face the alpha's wrath. So, he wanted to be careful while speaking.

"I actually wanted to ask a favor to the alpha. But I didn't know how I could contact him so I was just walking around, hoping that one day I would accidentally bump into him. Since you have asked…"

He took a deep breath in and asked after building up some courage, he asked Jerome, "Will you help me by arranging a meeting with the alpha? I wanted to meet him personally."

Jerome slightly pulled his brows together. He didn't know the boy very well, so he couldn't immediately agree to his request.

Thus, he instead proposed, "The alpha is a very busy man. So, whatever it is, you can tell me. I can pass the message to the alpha and then contact you later. How's that?"

"Umm…" Cillian's breath began to quiver and so did his voice. "It's something that only he can do."

"Okay." Jerome raised his brows and asked again, "So, what is it that you wanted to ask him? I am the alpha's trusted person. You can rest assured that the message will reach the alpha."

Cillian's heartbeat began to escalate again. Even though it was for a brief time, he had witnessed Everard and Jerome's close relationship. Thus, he was sure that Jerome wasn't lying when he said that the message would reach the alpha.

However, he couldn't leave it to chance.

'What if the Beta doesn't favor Ruby and he never passes the message along? And what if he prevents me from coming into contact with the alpha after learning my purpose?'

After thinking for some time, Cillian came up with a plan to get closer to the alpha.

He put on a very pitiful expression on his face. Then he used the acting skills that he had honed his whole life to garner more sympathy from Jerome.

"Actually, I was roaming around because I don't have any place to go to. I am an orphan. It has been very hard for me to fill my stomach without support from anyone. People treat me like a maggot. I was used to it and was ready to live the rest of my life like that. But yesterday, I…"

Suddenly, streams of tears rolled down his cheeks without even trying. The pain that he had been through his whole life flashed before his eyes, making him emotional.

"Yesterday, first time in my life, I finally felt as if I belonged somewhere. And I wanted to ask if… ask if he would…" Cillian felt a sharp pang in his heart because he had felt that way when Slayer had taken him in as his student.

The pain that he had locked up inside his heart came bursting out. He began wailing like a little kid as he reminisced the moments he had spent training with the great Slayer.

He felt as if it was just yesterday when he was exchanging blows with Slayer during the mock duels. Cillian still couldn't believe that someone as strong as Slayer wasn't alive anymore. And he hated how someone as great as him met such a horrible end.

Jerome was taken aback by that revelation. Though Cillian looked well-dressed for a poor orphan, he could feel that the boy's pain was real.

And the way he was crying, Jerome couldn't help but see a reflection of Everard in him. He had seen Everard having a tough time after the death of the late King. He could only imagine how much the poor orphan boy in front of him had gone through. After all, the world was too harsh for orphans like him.

"I think I understand what you wanted to ask from the alpha." Taking pity on Cillian, Jerome asked the boy after he calmed down a little, "Since you have no place to go, would you like it if I found you a job in the castle?"
