Conquering His Cold Heart -
Chapter 442 - 442: Heap of Lie
Anastasia, on the other hand, was still shaken by the thought that tonight was going to be her last night. She did hear his questions, but her mind simply went blank. She couldn't think of an answer to any of his questions.
Caspian was also not looking for any explanation from Anastasia. He was just pouring his heart out.
Even if he was to get answers from her right now, he wasn't going to listen to any of it.
He was not in a state to be able to process Anastasia's answers in a rational manner. He was driven by raw emotions, and the feeling of betrayal was too fresh in his heart for him to listen to any of his wife's arguments and excuses.
Caspian didn't like how his wife was closing her eyes. He felt as if she was avoiding looking at the consequences of her own lies.
Thus, he gently caressed his wife's tender cheek with the back of his palm, painting it red, and then abruptly grabbed her chin and lifted it with slight force.
Anastasia inhaled sharply, startled by his action, and then opened her eyes to look at Caspian's face. The dim candlelight was enough for her to see how devastated he was.
'This is exactly what I didn't want to see…' she thought while fixating her gaze on her husband's pitiable expression.
She wanted to wrap him in a warm embrace and let him cry on her bosoms. She wished to say that everything was going to be fine. But she would only be lying if she said that.
Caspian stared at Anastasia's blood-smeared lips. He slowly leaned closer to her face. He too wanted to seek solace in her warmth. However, he couldn't bring himself to close that small gap between their lips.
He forced himself to take a few steps back and then said scornfully, "I was doing fine before you came into my life. All I knew was to rule this Kingdom. But then you came into my life and turned my awfully mundane life into a fairy tale. You made me happy. You made me excited like a damn teenager every time you said that you loved me."
"But all of that was nothing but a heap of lie!" He pushed his blond hair back in frustration. He didn't care about dirtying his hair with his sticky fingers.
He kept on running his fingers through his hair as he shot more questions at Anastasia, "What was your goal behind playing with my feelings? What did you want to achieve? More land? Power? Or…"
"Did you actually want to die at my hands?" Caspian grimly chuckled after recalling how bold she was while placing the bet. "After all, you did say that I could kill you if you would fail to make me fall in love with you within a year."
"That's not why I placed the bet…" Anastasia let out a soft whisper before Caspian interrupted again.
"I mean, you do love your fantasy novels."
Anastasia frowned, not knowing why Caspian would suddenly mention that. "What's that got to do with anything right now?" she unintentionally wondered out loud.
He shrugged and began to mumble any stupid things that came to his mind at this point, "Did you want to live the last of your days like a fairy tale character? And then get killed by me before your illness took you away. Who wants to die a boring death when you can get sucked by a vampire to death, am I right?"
Anastasia wiped her tears aggressively and said with slight irritation, "I didn't even know you were a vampire before I came here, Caspian. If you would just listen to me, then you would know everything by now. I came here in search of the–"
"Well…" Caspian interrupted again, unwilling to listen to any excuses that Anastasia wanted to make.
He spread his arms and asked in a low growling voice that was laced with rage, "What do you want to do now that you won that bet? You did succeed in making a fool out of me. What now?"
He closed the gap between him and Anastasia again. He looked her dead in the eyes and screamed, "You break my heart into a million pieces and go back to Orsenia, proudly announcing to everyone that you fooled the monster of Sorvando and even managed to escape alive?"
"Or are you going to just die here and somehow frame me for killing you? And then force me to surrender my crown to your father as compensation for murdering his daughter?" He didn't shy away from voicing out all kinds of suspicion, without caring how absurd they sounded.
He was feeling as if he was burning from the inside. And he didn't care if he was spewing out nonsensical things. He just wanted to let it all out in the hope of feeling the slightest hint of solace after doing so.
All of a sudden, Caspian felt the burning flames in his heart calming down and stopping from swallowing him whole.
It took him a moment to feel the warmth of his wife's tender body. She had wrapped him in a tight embrace, and she was showering him with kisses all over his neck and shoulder.
Anastasia suddenly felt Caspian's body weight leaning on her.
He had calmed down to some extent.
She took a quiet sigh of relief and slowly said in a whisper, "I love you, Caspian. I do. I have never ever faked loving you. The love that I feel for you is as real as the warmth of the sun and the serenity of the moon. You know it is real too. You have felt it in your heart, haven't you?"
Caspian felt a lump in his throat. He couldn't deny it because he had obviously felt the warmth that his wife always showered on her.
One could only fake so much.
His wife's love for him was unconditional and immeasurable.
But that was the problem. How was he going to spend the rest of his life alone after losing the very person who gave him so much love? How was he ever going to cope after losing her?
He wasn't ready to accept that his wife had a very limited time left. He wanted to show the world to her but how was he going to do so after losing his world? The pain was just way too unbearable for him.
And before long, he was crying in her arms like a little child.
"I don't want to lose you, Anna… Please don't be so heartless… Don't leave me alone, please, I beg you…" he whispered in his broken voice as he wailed while holding Anastasia in a tight embrace.
