Chapter 93: Karma Is A Bitch (1)
Unlike how the games and other media portrayed slimes, the creatures were highly sought after in Nexaria.
Their acid was a crucial ingredient in research and the production of alchemical products and was considered as valuable as gold.
But that wasn’t all they were good for. The slimes’ jelly-like exterior was used to craft prosthetics and other highly popular resources in the noble circle of Nexaria.
There was such a demand for these creatures that they were considered a rare commodity; their presence alone could elevate a shop’s status as nobles went flocking in search of slime-related products to increase their non-existent beauty that resulted from generations of inbreeding within ’distant relatives’.
Back then, Adrian often wondered how the high-end shops were always stacked with slime-related products when they were so rare that even the heroes had only ever faced them once or twice, as the slimes didn’t have a natural habitat and appeared at random places.
Due to this reason, it was impossible to ’farm’ slimes as the Nexarians could with other beasts. Still, they never lacked slime-related resources as long as they were willing to pay enough.
Now, Adrian had his answer. The Tulkas had been secretly trading with Nexaria for years. The tribe’s wealth and progress were mainly due to their access to the valuable slimes.
In contrast, the Banurs, who had been banished and had nothing to do with the outsiders, lacked such access, were less developed and more traditional in their ways and were portrayed as savages.
’The Tulkas have been trading with Nexaria for god knows how long,’ Adrian thought. ’Yet they had the audacity to banish the Banurs for colluding with the outsiders?’
There were other questions in Adrian’s head. Most importantly, why haven’t the other tribes done anything about this yet? If they hated the Banurs enough to chase them out of their territory, then why haven’t they done anything to the Tulkas?
It didn’t take long for Adrian to come up with possible reasons. The first and most unlikely was that all of them were involved with the outsiders. And second, the likely
’I saw the beasts they have. Besides, no one would want to mess with the tribe who captured a Mammoroth.’
However, his train of thought was soon interrupted as he was handed a tool to aid him. Like the others, Adrian was given a modified pitchfork and pushed towards the pond. The pitchfork had been enchanted so that the acid released by the slimes wouldn’t make it rust.
However, the slaves were not given any protection. They stood barely dressed and walked on wooden planks spread across the small ponds. They stood on the planks, used the pitchforks to hunt the slimes, and put them in a separate container strapped to their backs.
The lack of protection was baffling. While it may not seem much at first, slime hunting was a dangerous job. One wrong move and someone could fall into the pond, dying from the acid the slimes leaked.
If not taken out within ten minutes, not even their bones would remain as everything would dissolve in the acid.
In the eyes of the Tulkas, the enchanted pitchforks held more value than the expendable slaves and, hence, weren’t provided any protection. This thought creeped Adrian out.
He thought he was slowly becoming heartless due to being turned into a chimaera. But it seemed someone like him still had some empathy left in his heart for those suffering.
’It’s gonna take a while before I forget about the old me...’
With that thought in his head, Adrian got to work. While the few of them farmed slimes, Adrian couldn’t help but notice the Tulkas suspiciously eyeing a female elf and her partner.
Adrian watched as the tribesmen eyed the female elf. At first, he thought they were looking at her with the usual filthy thoughts in their heads. But upon a second look, it became evident that their attention was elsewhere.
The elf’s mate brought a basket of slimes to the edge of a pond. Just as he was about to leave, a tribal approached and kicked him in the chest, sending him flying into the pond.
"ARGH!" the elf yelled as the slime’s acid started burning his skin, and he struggled to swim to the pond’s edge.
It seemed he could pull himself out of the pond, but then the tribal who had kicked him took the elf’s pitchfork and stabbed his hand over and over until he let go. All the while, the tribals were laughing at the elf’s struggle.
The female elf tried to jump in to save her partner, but the other slaves held her back. Adrian hesitated, not wanting to interfere. He knew going against the tribe could cause trouble for him later. So, he turned a blind eye to the situation and continued farming slimes.
But he couldn’t ignore the elf’s desperate pleas for help for long. As much as he wanted to be a heartless, cruel bastard, he couldn’t do it. He threw the pitchfork aside before noiselessly diving into the acidic pond.
The tribals were so engrossed in laughing that they didn’t even notice an invisible force slowly approaching the elf and dragging him to safety. By the time they did, the elf was already on the other side, burned by the acid but alive.
The elf’s partner rushed by his side, with the other slaves following behind. Meanwhile, the tribals looked confused. One moment, the elf was in front of them; the next, he was across the pond.
Between their confusion and chaos, Adrian slipped back into his position. He, too, had suffered some burns from the acid, but the troll blood in his veins healed him in no time.
Adrian glanced back at the elf, making sure he was okay. While dragging the elf to safety, he slipped a healing potion he bought back in Nexaria into his mouth.
Although it won’t be enough to heal his injuries completely, it was enough to ensure the elf’s survival. The slaves were glad and thanked the gods for the miracle, but Adrian wasn’t done yet.
The little stunt that the tribals pulled gave him an idea. The tribespeople weren’t aware of the sinister thought in Adrian’s head, but they soon would, and they’d wish they had never done something like they did to anyone.
’You wanted to play a game, so I’ll make sure you get to play it,’ Adrian thought as he memorised the faces of those three tribal youngsters. ’From both sides, that is.’
