Chapter 44: [Weekly Bonus Chapter 2/2] Moving Away (2)
As the night went on, the shopkeeper, Mr Jenkins, seemed to be in a rush. But his hurriedness only slowed him down as he fumbled the keys.
"Fuck!" Jenkins cursed out loud, trying to pick up the keys. "Come on! Those Raven bastards could get here any moment for their ’protection money’. This wouldn’t have been a problem if I had more Radian shards."
A couple of days ago, he had bought some Ratling mob drops at a ridiculous rate from a stranger and lost a lot of money because of it.
Jenkins was known for being the stingiest trader in the slums. That’s why he couldn’t comprehend why he bought things worth a few Lumen shards for Radian shards!
"I swear I’ll kill that fucker if I see him again," Jenkin gritted his teeth while trying to pull the shutter down. "Fuck... I didn’t even see his face then!"
"Going somewhere?"
"Argh- OUCH!"
Just as he was about to secure the last latch, a voice behind him made him jump and hit his head against the shutter. Rubbing his head, Jenkins turned around to see who scared him, but his eyes widened when he saw a familiar figure.
"You! What are you doing here?" he stammered, memories of the past con flooding back.
Adrian chuckled, leaning casually against the doorway. "I managed to get my hands on some decent loot, so I thought I’d sell them to my favourite trader."
"Favourite, my ass!" Jenkins scoffed, pointing a finger at Adrian. "You got some guts, boy, showing up here after ripping me off. I don’t want anything to do with you. Now begone! I have to close the shop before they show up, all thanks to you!"
In haste, Jenkins hurriedly pulled down the shutter, but not fast enough. Adrian, still leaning in the doorway, watched with amusement as Jenkins miscalculated and accidentally bumped his head on the descending metal once more.
"Son of bitch!" Jenkins cursed again, rubbing his forehead.
"Seems like you’re having a rough day, Mr. Trader. Mind if I stick around to see if it gets worse?" Adrian burst into laughter. "But jokes aside, you mentioned something about the Ravens-"
"What is it to you?" With a scowl, Jenkins shot Adrian a glare, clearly irritated by Adrian’s question and the throbbing main in his head. "You’re the reason I have these troubles in the first place! Get lost!"
"Sure... I’m the reason, and that’s why I’m trying to ease some of your burden," Adrian shrugged. "Buy the loot from me, and I’ll deal with the Ravens. Not bad for a deal, right?"
"Fine, fine. But this time, no tricks," Jenkins reluctantly agreed to Adrian’s terms, all the while eyeing him suspiciously. "I won’t let you fool me again, you hear?"
Adrian just shrugged, a playful smirk on his face. "Sure thing, can we head inside now?"
As they haggled over prices for the Direwolf fur, two shadowy figures silently entered the shop. One of them must have gestured something to Jenkins but got ignored as he was busy with Adrian, and it was something they didn’t like.
As a result, they started grabbing random items, making their way toward the counter where Jenkins stood with Adrian.
"H-Hey, can you give me a minute?" Jenkins looked up, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. "I’m dealing with a customer. I’ll be with you as soon as I’m done here."
"Does it fucking look like we care?" the shorter one among the two rolled his eyes. "The sooner you pay us, the better it’ll be for your health."
Anxious, Jenkins turned towards Adrian with pleading eyes, expecting him to handle the situation as promised. However, Adrian merely waited, a sly grin on his face.
The taller one amongst the two noticed Jenkins looking at Adrian and laughed. He wrapped his hand around Adrian’s shoulder, whispering a threat.
"You better get out if you want to keep your legs intact. You know who we are, don’t you? So get lost while I’m being nice, and we won’t have a problem, get it?"
Adrian sighed and took a step back, making it look like he was going to obey. However, the goon’s hand was still on his shoulder and without a warning, he grabbed the guy’s hand and tossed him over his shoulder.
Before anyone could react, Adrian slammed him onto the table, breaking it along with the goon’s hand.
"Sorry, I don’t like being touched," Adrian shrugged, stepping on the guy’s other hand and crushing it while looking at the remaining miscreant. "Consent matters, right?"
"You’re gonna regret this!" The short king said before throwing a punch.
Adrian easily dodged the level 10 thief’s attack and countered with a quick jab to his midsection. Not discouraged by failure, the Raven lunged at Adrian from the side, aiming to catch him off guard.
However, Adrian anticipated the move and sidestepped, causing the Raven to crash into a display shelf. Items clattered to the floor as the shelf wobbled and fell over the idiot.
The first Raven, recovering from the initial blow, swung wildly at Adrian. However, his attacks were as weak as an infant’s wobbly first steps.
"Stop dodging, you coward!" the guy yelled, gritting his teeth.
"Fine, but don’t cry about it later," Adrian shrugged.
The Raven, frustrated, threw a kick, but Adrian deftly grabbed his leg and spun him around, using the momentum to send him crashing into a stack of crates.
Meanwhile, the second Raven regained his footing and charged at Adrian with renewed determination. Adrian, however, was ready. He ducked under a wild swing, delivering a swift uppercut that left the Raven staggering.
Adrian performed a spin kick without missing a beat, sending the second Raven sprawling to the floor, like the first. They lay on the floor, groaning in pain before Adrian knocked them out.
The shop looked like a cyclone hit it, but Jenkins wasn’t paying attention to the damage. His eyes were fixed on Adrian, who was busy wiping dust off his shoulders.
"What should we do about them?" Jenkins broke the silence, pointing at the unconscious Ravens.
"I’ll take care of it."
Saying so, Adrian effortlessly dragged the two goons outside by their legs, dumping them in the trash cans. He then dusted off his hands and strolled back into the shop as if nothing had happened.
"You... you’re something else," Jenkins, still in shock, stammered.
Adrian grinned, returning to their negotiations. "Now, about that Direwolf fur..."
