Chimaera's Conquest: The Legend Of The Devourer -
Chapter 43: Moving Away (1)
Chapter 43: Moving Away (1)
As the night shrouded Nexaria in its starry veil, people began retiring to their homes. Adrian pulled his hoodie out of habit as he treaded through the cobblestone streets.
He no longer needed to hide his face to cover his deformity. However, he still had enemies lurking in the shadows and couldn’t afford to have his identity leaked. That’s why his hoodie was still his best friend... until he left Nexaria for good.
Lamplights flickered as he made his way towards the store to sell the loot, casting an amber glow on the worn buildings. Despite the run-down condition of the slums, he often spotted people laughing their hearts out, but it didn’t take long for him to spot someone fighting in some corner for the pettiest of reasons.
While people of the Central City might be repulsed and threatened by the unpredictability of the slums, Adrian had grown used to it. Maybe it was because his own heart was in a similar, unpredictable state.
However, he wasn’t the only one with an unpredictable heart. Red was feeling the same way. How could he not when, even though he knew who Victor’s killer was, he was unable to find him?
With a deformed head like the Chimaera, it shouldn’t have been tough to locate him. Unfortunately for Red, the person he sought proved smarter than him and had covered his tracks well.
Besides, Red wasn’t exactly known for his tracking skills, either. It had always been Timothy’s field of expertise. The thought of asking Tim for help briefly crossed Red’s mind, but he quickly brushed it off.
"Asking Tim for help meant asking the entire guild," Red spat out his frustrations. "And involving the guild means no revenge for me. No... I have to do this myself! Only killing that bastard with my own hands would bring me peace."
Usually, the attire would help him look for someone, but the gear of the Chimaera in the footage was way too common in the slums. Unlike the central city, where everyone wore pristine clothes, torn and tattered clothes were most common in the slums.
Besides, the worst thing was that Red couldn’t remember the guy’s face. He was an assassin who saw hundreds of people in a day and killed a dozen.
Adrian was supposed to be another such kill, so Red never bothered paying attention to his appearance. Besides, by the time Chubby was done punching him, there wasn’t much left to look at.
As for the recorder Victor used, it never showed the Chimaera’s healed face either, as it fell to the floor during the scuffle between Victor and the Chimaera and only got this target’s legs and family jewels.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for Red to move forward with. After all, he couldn’t go on inspecting every slum dweller’s private parts.
He could have taken help from one of the brothels owned by the Ravens, but then again, the word would get back to the higher-ups, and that’s the last thing Red wanted.
Deep in his world, Red accidentally bumped into someone on the street. Although the bump didn’t cause any pain, it annoyed his already irritated mind, and that irritation made him lose his cool.
"Hey, you! Where do you think you are walking off to without apologising?" he questioned, grabbing the man’s shoulders. "Do you fucking know who I work for?"
Adrian sighed under his hoodie. He wasn’t having a great day and wanted some peace. But it seemed his patience was being tested yet again. He turned to see someone he didn’t want to cross paths with just yet.
’What the hell is this fucker doing here,’ Adrian thought as the memories of his death flashed before him.
Following a lack of response from the man, Red got even angrier, balling his fist to punch the man. But Adrian easily dodged the punch and slipped out of Red’s grip.
As Adrian backed up, he realised that Red hadn’t recognised him yet. As strange as it seemed, the thought made Adrian sigh in relief. If Red didn’t know him yet, that would mean the rest of the Ravens were also clueless about his existence.
’They are clueless for now. But depending on what I do next, they might figure it out soon.’
As much as Adrian wanted to teach Red a lesson, the timing was off. Firstly, Red was stronger than him in most fields other than intelligence, agility and charm.
Adrian’s charm stat used to be really low because of his deformity, but it was better now that he got rid of it. While not in the 90s like before, it was nearly halfway through, meaning he could pull some stunts without immediate or long-term consequences.
’No, I shouldn’t take any risks,’ Adrian shook the mischievous thoughts out of his head. ’As much as I hate it, it’d be better to apologise and get away as soon as possible.’
However, there was something Adrian had overlooked- his shitty luck. Dodging Red’s attack and then unintentionally smacking his hand away made the fiery redhead lose his crap, and he lunged to attack Adrian again.
Sadly for Red, things didn’t get better. Adrian dodged his attack again, but the trouble didn’t end there. Red couldn’t catch his balance in time and ended up falling into a stinky drain connected to a nearby pub’s restroom.
The drain had been opened earlier, but the workers, in their usual half-assed manner, left the place uncovered as they were done for the day.
"ARGH!" Red yelled at the top of his lungs.
While everyone else covered their noses, Adrian nodded sympathetically towards Red. No one sane would ever want to swim in the piss and shit, yet there Red was... enjoying his time in a private jacuzzi.
’Yeah... I think that’s a good enough lesson for now,’ Adrian thought, scratching the back of his head. ’I should probably escape while I can... wouldn’t want this fucker to approach me while smelling like shit.’
As he walked away from the scene, Adrian saw a plethora of notifications waiting for him. There were a dozen of them from the entities who enjoyed his interaction with Red and had sponsored him fourteen stat points.
"...Thanks for the dono!"
