Chapter 215: New Trial, New Enemies (2)
If given a choice between fighting a Kitsune, a creature known for its cunning and shape-shifting abilities, or a Succubus, a seductive demon that feeds on the life force of men, trained adventurers from Nexaria would go for the succubus. No, and it won’t be because of some prejudiced ideas relating to succubi.
The plain and simple reason was that they didn’t want to die a horrible death. Besides, dealing with the succubi was easier than dealing with a kitsune.
Another reason for going up against Succubi instead of Kitsune was that the half-fox creatures were known to be immortal or, in other words, ageless.
They could live for thousands and thousands of years without ever showing any signs of growth. Forget about the vampires living in a forest and going to high school all to collect graduation caps; the Kitsunes had all that and more even before vampires were a thing.
Not to mention, their eyes were extremely powerful, something Adrian had taken advantage of plenty of times since awakening as a Chimaera. Right now, one such pair of eyes was staring down at him while a Kitsune in her hybrid form had him pinned to the ground.
’DO NOT look into her eyes, you moron!’
Adrian averted her eyes, only for them to fall on her tail. Vesper had once told him while training that the number of tails a kitsune has signifies its age and strength. They were born with one tail, but they grew more tails as they age up.
’Growing a second tail usually takes a century or more... and this bitch has nine tails!?’
Adrian was surprised at how bad his luck was despite pouring all his free stat points into it. There had been no records, at least in Nexaria, that showed anyone having survived an encounter with a kitsune having more than three tails.
The worst part about losing his eyes was that Adrian couldn’t even view the creature’s stats for any weaknesses. The two crutches he had depended on all his life were snatched away from him, leaving him vulnerable.
However, Adrian wasn’t as helpless as he thought. After closing his eyes to avoid accidentally staring into hers, Adrian rolled his legs back before delivering a powerful blow to her stomach.
Adrian knew it wouldn’t do much, but it was enough for the fox lady to let go of his hands. Once freed, Adrian wasted no time grabbing the kitsune by her neck.
[Blackened Aegis Gauntlet special ability, <Obsidian Grasp> activated.]
[The target will remain immobilised for 5 seconds.]
[Cooldown: 45 seconds.]
With the kitsune rendered immobile, Adrian knew he had no time to spare. He seized his blade and unleashed a mighty swing, cleaving through two of her nine tails.
Severing a kitsune’s tail was akin to severing her arteries. With her tails gone, she wouldn’t be able to conduct mana properly, which was like breath to kitsunes.
In other words, as long as Adrian could sever all of her tails, he could weaken the creature enough to kill it in one blow. That’s why Adrian went for another swing, but [Obsidian Grasp] was done buying time for him.
As he swung the blade, the woman dodged effortlessly, her movements almost too fast for the eye to follow. However, she wasn’t done.
With a flick of her wrist, she sent Adrian’s sword flying from his grasp, leaving him defenceless from what was to come next.
The kitsune roared loudly as she lunged at him like a seasoned martial artist. However, she wasn’t only using her limbs but her tails to attack Adrian as well.
No matter how much he had trained under Vesper and Seraphina, Adrian wasn’t prepared for the kitsune’s ferocity. He could block the obvious moves, but the attacks from her tails were unpredictable and caused him the most damage.
Had it not been for the Obsidian armour he obtained, he’d have been defeated a long time ago. The 52% damage reduction from the Obsidian armour set was why he was alive.
Adrian stumbled backwards, desperately trying to evade the woman’s relentless attacks. But no matter how hard he tried, she always seemed one step ahead, as if she knew him better than he knew himself.
Then, with a sudden burst of speed, the woman closed the distance between them, her hand lashing out with unnatural strength. Adrian felt a searing pain shoot through his chest as her claws sliced through his flesh, leaving him gasping for breath.
However, it was merely an elemental attack. The armour was still sturdy as ever, but kitsune had used magic to link it to Adrian’s conscience. In other words, the armour was no longer protecting Adrian, but amplifying his pain.
Watching Adrian writhe in pain as she rained blow after blow on him, the kitsune’s smile widened, revealing gleaming white teeth. She had once trusted a man who had done the same to her before killing her for her eyes.
Adrian wasn’t the same man, but he was one, and that was enough reason for the kitsune to rip him to shreds.
Meanwhile, Adrian tried grabbing the witch again to use [Obsidian Grasp] and repeat what he had done before. But the kitsune was prepared for it and didn’t linger around him any longer than necessary to torment him.
Adrian gritted his teeth in frustration. He couldn’t believe the kitsune was physically overpowering him despite his strength already crossing 170 points.
As if that wasn’t enough, with a flick of her wrist, the kitsune pulled him into her arms, forcing Adrian to look into her eyes. Adrian tried averting his gaze, but the tails ensured he stayed in one place like she wanted.
Just when she was about to cast her illusion magic, Adrian headbutted her, causing her to stumble backwards.
"My turn now!" Adrian yelled, going to grab her.
But when Adrian thought he had her cornered, the kitsune vanished into thin air, leaving him alone in the forest’s eerie silence. He cursed her out, only for the kitsune to reappear behind him.
Before Adrian could do anything, her claws slashed through the air. He cried out in pain as her claws raked across his back, leaving deep gashes behind.
Adrian fought with all his strength, but it was like trying to hold back a tidal wave with his bare hands. The kitsune was simply too powerful, her magic too unpredictable for him to overcome.
As the battle raged on, Adrian could feel his strength waning, his limbs growing heavy with exhaustion. He knew he couldn’t keep this up much longer, not against an opponent like the kitsune.
Smiling, the kitsune went in for the final strike, but Adrian had other plans as he flipped her off and said, "I forfeit the trial!"
The following moment, Adrian disappeared into thin air, leaving the kitsune to let out a scream that shook the forest.
