Chapter 119: Rock And A Hard Place (1)

The group sprinted towards the exit, their hearts pounding with the desperate hope of escape. But the Queen was one step ahead and had anticipated their every move.

As they hurried towards the exit, they were met with a horrifying sight. The corridor was covered in sticky webs. Clearly, it was a trap set by the Queen to trap them. One misstep, and they would be trapped, defenceless against the Queen and her spiderlings.

"Sophia, try to burn the webs or something," Adrian instructed, snatching Marcus’s shield from him since he was injured. "The rest of us will try to keep the monsters busy."

"On it!" Sophia replied and got to burn the webs, but it turned out to be harder than expected.

The webs were made of a strange material. They were as strong as steel, and magic had little effect on them. At this rate, it would take them hours to break through.

However, that wasn’t what Vincent and Clara were worried about.

"That voice and that demeanour..." Vincent mumbled.

It didn’t click when Adrian asked them to run since they were all preoccupied. But now that Adrian was in full commander mode, Vincent recognised him.

However, before he could point out the obvious, Amelia poked him with his elbow, asking him to be quiet while nodding towards Sula. Vincent was taken aback by her actions as she had never touched him before, maintaining the line between a soldier and a prince.

But he was more taken aback by her calm attitude, which suggested she knew about Adrian already. His head shot back towards Sophia, and he realised she must have known about him, too.

’...damn it!’

Vincent cursed as he realised why she had been so happy suddenly after being gloomy for over a month. Her lover had returned from the dead. Obviously, she would be happy. But Vincent was far from pleased about the new development.

He thought he finally had a shot with Sophia, but now that the bastard was back, all his plans were thrown in a wrench.

Adrian also realised that his identity was exposed, but knew he could do nothing about it as it was a mistake made in the heat of the moment. If time allowed, he would devise a plan to deal with the mess later.

’For now, there’s a bigger problem to deal with...’

The corridor was massive, which unfortunately meant that the Queen could enter the place without difficulty and did precisely that.

Adrian and Sula held the frontline while Vincent and Clara were directly behind them, followed by Amelia and Marcus. It was to buy Sophia as much time as possible so she could break through the sticky barrier in their way.

Adrian had Marcus’s shield in one hand and the Minotaur’s Broadsword in the other. He could see the wheels turning in everyone’s head while they placed two and two together.

Sula was surprised by the weapon that Adrian brought out of thin air, while the heroes recognised the sword and realised it was Adrian who had fought and ’defeated’ Rowan during his funeral.

Vincent, Clara and Marcus couldn’t believe their eyes as realisation donned upon them. They were unaware of what had happened to Adrian and were dying to know more, but Adrian paid them no attention as someone already had all of his attention.

’I need to get rid of her somehow. She knows too much, and I can’t take any risks now,’ Adrian thought, eyeing Sula.

Having lived with the Tulkas for a while, Adrian was more or less aware of their thought process. He knew Sula would tell everyone about him the first opportunity she got. Adrian had to eliminate it before that happened.

However, that’s when he was faced with a dilemma. Since Sula was also a tank, he couldn’t just kill her without endangering everyone else. After all, he needed her help to push the monsters back.

While Adrian was busy with his thoughts, one of the small critters attacked them. Adrian held the sword tightly, ready to strike. But at the last moment, it stopped.

Adrian got agitated and was about to take a swing at the beast when he heard a bloodcurdling scream from the back. He turned back and saw the injured spiderling digging its pincers into Marcus’s neck.

The dwarf might have been safe from the poison, but he would still succumb to a lethal wound. Adrian wondered where the creature had emerged from and soon got his answer.

Marcus kept attacking the spiderling, as it bit into his shoulder, but it was all in vain. He kept screaming in agony as the creature dragged Marcus into the hole it had emerged from.

Amelia lunged to help him, but it was too late as the hole disappeared just like it had emerged. Marcus was dead.

"Damn it!" Vincent cursed, but Adrian slapped him.

"Focus on the darn fight, you moron!" he yelled as Vincent felt his stinging cheek.

No one had slapped him before. Not even his mother. Yet a lowly human dared to disrespect him like that? Vincent thought of killing Adrian right then and there, but Clara stopped him before he did anything stupid.

"Not here, not right now!" she urged him. "You’ll get the time, but not now. We need all the people we can get!"

Vincent heard her and swallowed his pride. But that was the last thing he did at Clara’s insistence, as another spiderling popped out of the ground, mounting Clara.

Both Vincent and Adrian simultaneously swung their swords at the creature. Although they couldn’t break through the creature’s exoskeleton, they did manage to get the spiderling off Clara’s back and stuck into its mother’s sticky webs.

"Thanks..." Clara softly expressed her gratitude, looking at Adrian, who nodded and turned once she drank the final vial of antidote.

But as he did, something landed before him with a thud. It was Sula or what little remained of her face. The creature had taken the time to deal with Sula while the heroes were busy looking after each other.

The situation was getting worse by the passing moment. Adrian knew he needed to do something, but getting to the ’doing’ part was difficult.

’What should I do? What should I do...?’ Adrian thought, slightly panicking when he saw something. ’That’s it! The pond should do the trick!
