Chapter 54: A Second Chance!?

Chapter 54: A Second Chance!?

Claire’s POV

Evander left the room, leaving behind lingering warmth from that unexpected kiss on my forehead. I sat there, still in shock as his words echoed in my mind. He wants me to give him a chance. None of it made sense. If he really loved me, he should have told me long ago. But then again, I hadn’t exactly spoken up either.

"No, no!" I muttered, giving my cheek a light slap. "Claire, don’t let him get in your head. He is not the man you can be happy with." I told myself, trying to shake off the doubts creeping in. I knew better than anyone that a life with Evander would be anything but easy. Even if he loved me... what good would it do?

His family would always be there in shadows. His mother, who forced this marriage on us, despised me from the start. And yet... If he really loved me, why was he so against this marriage back then?

And what was that about me marrying him for the money? Did he really believe that? I’d never remember saying it in front of him. How did everything get so twisted that now the one person I loved with all my heart was the last person I wanted in my life?

Just then, a soft knock on the door snapped me out of my thoughts. I looked up to see Sissy standing there, arms crossed, her face etched with a mix of worry and anger.

"What on earth happened to you?" she demanded as she walked over and gave me a hard look. "I leave you alone for a few hours, and here you are like this. First, that old man George, and now... who did this?" She glanced at the medical reports on the side table, frowning as she looked at me waiting for the answers.

"Evander," I blurted out without thinking, instantly regretting it as Sissy’s eyes went wide.

"Evander?" She nearly shouted, her hands gripping the bed rail. "What do you mean, Evander? What did he do to you?"

I sighed as the whole thing that happened ran in front of my eyes. "It’s... complicated," I muttered, unable to keep the frustration out of my voice. I just couldn’t explain everything to her in a few words, right?

"Well, un-complicate it then," Sissy stated, as anger was clearly evident in her tone. "You know you can’t keep letting him walk all over you, Claire."

I took a deep breath, feeling the conflicted emotions bubbling up inside me. "I know, Sissy. Trust me, I know. But..."

"But what?" she interrupted as she looked clearly irritated. "That man! He showed up with that icy look, didn’t say much, just told me to come here. Do you even know how much worry he caused? And that little guy was crying his eyes out, thinking he might not see you again! I was so scared, and he didn’t even bother to tell me what was wrong with you!"

I looked down, feeling guilty as I had troubled her again. "I didn’t want to worry anyone," I said in a low tone.

Sissy shook her head. She was clearly not convinced. "Too late for that. And to think he is the reason for this mess... again!"

I gave a weak smile. "I just don’t know what to make of him anymore, Sissy. He is saying he wants a second chance, but I am so confused. Every time I think I understand him, he does something that makes no sense, totally out of his character.

She sighed and put a hand on my shoulder. "Look, if he wants a chance, he is going to have to prove he deserves it. You don’t owe him anything after everything that’s happened. But whatever you decide, just remember, I am here for you."

I nodded, feeling a little better but still lost in my thoughts yet again.

Evander’s POV

I still couldn’t believe what had just happened. We were supposed to be talking about Susan, but somehow, it turned into something else. I finally got all the answers I had been looking for, but even so, one thing was clear— I needed Claire back in my life.

I knew I could make her stay if I really wanted to. I have always been someone who gets what he wants, even if I had to push her into it. But looking at her today, I realized that wouldn’t work. I couldn’t force her anymore. She deserved more than that.

This time, I had to do things differently. I needed to show her that I could be someone she could trust and she could love again.

As I left the room, her words echoed in my head. I had three months to prove myself. It wasn’t a lot of time, but I was determined to make her see that I meant every word. I wasn’t giving up on us.

I was lost in my thoughts, trying to sort everything out, when Eliam suddenly cupped my face, his voice soft and sweet. "Daddy! When can I meet Mommy?"

His innocent question pulled me out of my thoughts. I looked down at him, his big eyes full of hope, and my heart ached. How could I explain everything to him?

"She is going to be home soon, my son," I said as I pulled him into a hug. I caressed his little head gently, trying to keep my voice calm. "Just wait a little longer.

Eliam nodded eagerly as his small arms wrapped around me. I smiled, even though my heart was heavy. I had to make things right, not just for me but for him too. I couldn’t let him down.

"Is Mommy coming back to stay with us forever?" He asked; his voice was full of hope.

I took a deep breath, holding him a little tighter. "Yes, son. She is coming back." I assured him, as I just hoped I could keep that promise.
