Chapter 45: Real Nature Of Evander!

Claire’s POV

I didn’t know what came over me when I saw Evander rush out of the wardroom to check on Susan. She looked hurt, and after hearing part of their conversation, I felt a strange tightness in my chest. Almost without thinking, I followed him, wanting to see what had happened.

Yes, I was concerned about her. But, deep down, I wanted to watch how Evander treated her— how gentle and caring he would be toward her. Maybe seeing him with her like that would help me sort out my own feelings.

I needed to remind myself that he was with her, not me, and that whatever small feelings I had would eventually fade away.

I entered the car without waiting, feeling the tension in the air. It was clear that Evander didn’t want me with him, but I didn’t care. I had to go. The ride was silent, each minute stretching on endlessly until I couldn’t hold it in anymore.

"You really care about her, don’t you?" I blurted out, unable to stop myself.

Evander didn’t respond right away. Even though I wasn’t looking at him, I could feel his gaze on me; thankfully, it was a red light on the road. After a moment, he spoke, his voice calm but heavy with meaning. "Why shouldn’t I? She was there for me during my darkest time."

His words confused me. I turned to look at him, but what I saw in his eyes made my heart tighten— hurt, mixed with something else I couldn’t place. I swallowed hard. "Oh," I murmured, the weight of his words sinking in.

I couldn’t stop myself from adding, "But then again... you two really do seem to fit together." I said it softly, almost to myself, but loud enough for him to hear.

Evander’s response was quick. "Really? The whole world thinks so!" He started the engine again since the light had turned green.

I smirked at his response as my voice was dripping with sarcasm. "Yes, a cold, heartless, disloyal man like you and a shrewd, lewd woman like her... you two suit each other perfectly together!" This time, I didn’t even try to hide the contempt in my tone. I said it with confidence, hoping it would hurt him more.

Evander didn’t say anything. His silence spoke louder than any words could. It was like my words hit him harder than I had expected, but why would I care? He was the one who had pushed me to the brink of madness, the one who had made me lose myself. It took me so long to rebuild my life, and yet, when I needed him, he was nowhere to be found.

And now here he was, rushing to take care of Susan, his so-called "white moonlight," while I was left in the dust. And on top of that, he shamelessly accepted that they looked good together. It made my stomach turn, but I wasn’t about to let him see how much it hurt.

Hurt me more, Evander! The more you act like this... the more I will hate you, and that will help me move on. I thought these three years were enough to forget him, but it was clear I was wrong. His actions, his indifference, his relationship with Susan— they were all pushing me further into a corner, and I felt my heart breaking all over again.

Soon, the car came to a stop. We both instantly stepped out of the car and entered the apartment building. The guard recognized Evander immediately, giving him access without a second thought, like he had been here a thousand times before. My mind raced as the truth began to settle in. They were far closer than I had ever imagined. The more I witnessed, the easier it became to lose any remaining hope or feelings for him. Which was better for me.

At first, I believed his words— thinking there was nothing between them— but now, how could I trust anything he said? He had always lied to me, hidden things from me. How could I be so blind?

We took the elevator to the 13th floor, the silence between us thick with unspoken words. When we reached the door, Evander punched in the apartment code without hesitation. My eyes widened in shock. He even knew her code. They were that close. My chest tightened as the final pieces of my heart crumbled.

I never knew his phone password, yet she knew the code of our mansion where I used to live, and he was aware of hers! Why didn’t I see it a lot earlier and stretch it for two long years.

That was it. The proof I had been avoiding, the tiniest shred of doubt I had left, was gone. The man I thought I knew, the man I had loved, wasn’t real. And as much as I tried to hold on, I realized... he was never meant to be mine.

There would never be another man in my life after him. He had destroyed any chance of that.

As we entered, we saw Susan on the floor, wincing in pain. When she saw Evander, her eyes lit up, but as soon as she looked at me, a flash of hatred crossed her face.

Evander rushed to her side, his attention fully on her. He didn’t look at me much, and when he did, it was brief, as if I didn’t matter.

However, what shocked me even more were his next words.

"Who the hell permitted you to enter my apartment?!" He snapped; his glare was icy as he stared at her. "I told you not to cross the line, and yet here you are."

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Was this the same man who had been so gentle with me earlier? I mean, seeing him like this... I he was a lot gentler to me.

"I care for you, and I look after you, but that doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want!" Evander’s voice was cold, more distant than I had ever heard. His expression was hard, and his eyes narrowed with frustration.

In the car, he had seemed softer and almost open. But now, seeing him this way, it was clear he wasn’t the same person. The way he spoke to Susan was so cold and strict— it made me realize something. He had been far more lenient with me; even when I crossed the line with my words, he just played along.

But what was happening here? What was the real Evander?
