Chapter 39: Eliam Isn’t Your Son!

Chapter 39: Eliam Isn’t Your Son!

"Ack!" Gloria’s face went pale, her eyes widening as she hit the wall. Evander hadn’t even used that much force, but it was enough to make her gasp for air. She reached up, tapping his hand, silently begging him to let go. But he didn’t budge.

Evander leaned in close, his gaze sharp and fierce. "Mother," he said in a cold, steady voice, "I don’t hold back when it comes to Claire. So if you value your life, stay away from her. I won’t hesitate... even if it means burying you six feet under." His tone was calm but deadly serious, each word carrying a warning she couldn’t ignore.

Finally, he released her. Gloria stumbled forward, coughing and clutching her neck as she tried to catch her breath. Tears filled her eyes, a mix of shock and anger burning within them as she clenched her fists. Even after what just happened, she refused to back down. His threat was clear, but she wasn’t done yet.

"How dare you put your hands on me!" Gloria spat, her voice shaking but laced with anger. "Do you really think treating me like this will make her come back?" She rubbed her neck and winced in pain as she could feel the bruise forming on her tender neck.

Evander didn’t flinch at her misery. "Have I not made myself clear, Mother?" he asked; his gaze was sharp and unyielding. There wasn’t a trace of sympathy in his eyes as he looked at her. There was only cold and unbreakable resolve in his eyes.

Gloria had raised an eyebrow. She was completely unfazed by his warning. She walked over to her dressing table, picked up some ointment, and began to dab it on her neck slowly as she gave Evander a taunting look.

"Oh? So that’s it?" She mocked; her voice was dripping with disdain. "If she knew the violent man you are, she would never have married you. Maybe that’s why she left."

Evander clenched his fists, taking a deep breath, trying to hold back the fury boiling up inside. Gloria knew exactly how to dig at him, and she wasn’t holding back. He scoffed as his face twisted in disbelief. "With a mother like you, it’s no wonder anyone would turn violent. What else could you expect?" he said calmy but his was voice dripping with sarcasm.

It was one thing for her to treat him like he was nothing, but dragging others into her twisted schemes just to hurt him was a step too far. He turned back to leave and muttered, "Was your mother as heartless as you?" But it was audible enough for Gloria to hear.

As he turned to leave, Gloria’s voice stopped him in his tracks. "No," she said sharply. "She was better than I will ever be, because I was a respectful child. I didn’t overstep my bounds like some people who think they can do whatever they want."

Evander paused; he turned slowly to face her. "Really, Mother? Is that what you think?" His expression turned deadly, his eyes narrowing into cold slits as he looked at her, his jaw clenched tight. He took a slow, deliberate step toward her, each movement exuding a quiet, restrained rage that made the air feel heavy.

"Respectful? Boundaries?" He murmured, his voice a chilling whisper full of dark mockery. "Don’t talk to me about respect, Mother. You lost that right the moment you tried to control every part of my life and turned those closest to me into pawns for your games."

Evander leaned in close, his eyes boring into hers, unblinking. "But let me make one thing clear," he continued as his voice dropped even lower and dripped with venom. "If you even think about hurting Claire—or anyone else I care about—there won’t be a corner in this world where you can hide from me. Do you understand that?"

Gloria’s face paled, but he didn’t back off, his intense gaze holding her in place, every inch of him radiating a lethal threat. "I am done playing your games, Mother. Next time, it won’t end with just words."

With those words, Evander was finally ready to leave, but Gloria knew just how to keep him from walking away.

"You can take Claire if you want," Gloria said, her voice steady but laced with menace. "But I am taking the baby back home." She threatened him back as her threat hung in the air like a dark cloud. "If you think you can choose between Claire and Eliam, then go ahead. Make your choice."

She stepped closer as she reached out to touch his cheek— an attempt she had failed to make earlier. This time, her fingers brushed his skin, but Evander felt nothing other than the bubbling rage within him.

Evander jerked his head away as his eyes flashed with danger. "You think you can use Eliam against me?" he gritted his teeth as his voice was low and dangerous. "You are underestimating me, Mother. I will not let you manipulate me like this."

He stepped back, creating distance between them. His body was tense. "If you try to take him, you will find out just how far I am willing to go to protect what’s mine."

"Sure! Do as you wish! I have every right to take Eliam back home," Gloria replied, her voice dripping with confidence. "Be my guest, and I will make sure to snatch him right from you." She leaned in closer, her eyes narrowing as she grasped the fabric of Evander’s shirt, pulling him down to her level. "As you know, Eliam isn’t your son, my dear!"
