Chapter 38: Gloria Kensington!

Evander’s POV

I left Claire’s apartment, feeling defeated. Her cold, distant look stayed in my mind. She shut me out, and I couldn’t find a way to approach her. I just wanted to be there to ease some of her pain. I knew she was deeply hurt, which showed in our quiet moment.

But I wasn’t going to give up. No matter how hard she tried to keep me away, I would always find a way back into her life. I would do whatever it took to make her see I was there for her and she could lean on me any time.

But I needed answers before I could even think about winning her back. Someone had driven a wedge between us, poisoned her heart, and made her believe lies that tore us apart. I had to find out who these people were—the ones who worked behind the scenes to destroy what we had. Only then could I make things right and keep her safe from getting hurt again.

I sat in my car as my eyes were locked on Claire’s apartment when my cell phone suddenly rang. I sighed, not in the mood to talk, but when I saw the number flashing on the screen, my expression turned serious, and I quickly answered.

"Did you find anything?" I asked right away.

"Yes, boss," the voice on the other end replied. "I saw them meeting with your mother."

"My mother, Zaniel? Are you sure?" I asked, struggling to keep my anger in check.

"Boss, I have been your secretary for a long time. You know you can trust me," Zaniel assured me, his tone steady and reliable. He had always been there, ready to help whenever I needed him.

"Yes, I followed them," Zaniel continued, "but I think there could be someone else—" I didn’t let him finish. I ended the call as I was too shaken by what I had just heard.

I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself, but it was useless. Anger bubbled up within me as I couldn’t keep my emotions in check.

My own mother had been involved in Claire’s abduction the moment she had returned. How could she? How could my blood work against me like this?

Had she not had enough! What was she trying again?!

"Mother," I muttered. I gripped the steering wheel tightly as rage simmered just beneath the surface. I started the car, my mind set on one thing: I was going to confront her, and I was getting answers.

I took one last look at Claire’s apartment. The car engine rumbled to life, and I slowly pulled out onto the road, with a number of questions in my mind.

An hour later, I pulled up to the old Kensington Mansion. As I stepped out of the car and entered the main hall, several maids and servants quickly gathered; their eyes watched me with a hint of nervousness.

The butler, as usual, came forward to greet me. "Master, I will inform Madam of your arrival," he said in a polite tone and bowed his head slightly. But I didn’t feel like playing along with any formalities today.

Without even a second glance, I tossed my overcoat toward him. "No need," I said iciy. "I will go to her myself."

Without waiting for an answer, I marched straight to the staircase. My footsteps were loud and firm as I climbed up to the second floor. My anger grew stronger with each step, burning me from inside. By the time I reached my mother’s door, I was fully consumed by rage.

"You are here!" My mother, Gloria Kensington, smiled brightly when she turned to face me.

"Cut the fake smile, Mom!" I growled, my voice low but cold and dangerous.

"What... what happened?" She stammered as she reached out to touch my cheek, but I stepped back, not wanting her to come any closer. "Why are you being so cold to me all of a sudden?" Tears filled her eyes, and that only made my anger rise, which I was trying hard to control.

Her tears reminded me of Claire’s, the night she cried, and it was all because of my mother!

"What were you thinking when you sent those people to kidnap Claire that night?" I gritted my teeth, barely holding back my rage.

"Oh!" she gasped. "So, you came here for that girl, not to see me?"

"Yes, Mom! I am here for Claire! Your actions hurt her and tore us apart. I want answers, and I want them now!" My voice echoed with power, and I could feel the weight of my words hanging in the air between us.

"I tore you apart?!" She glared at me, letting out a bitter chuckle as she stepped back. "Wasn’t it her who walked away from you?"

"Yes, she left," I shot back; my voice was fuming. "But why did you have her kidnapped?!"

She rolled her eyes, looking at me with an expression that almost seemed like pity. "She hurt you, so I hurt her back. I wanted her to see what she put you through— all those nights you locked yourself away, chained by memories of her."

Her face turned serious, her voice sharp. "I needed her to understand what she did to you. You were broken, Evander. She needed to feel that pain, too."

I clenched my fists, trying to keep my voice steady. "You don’t get to decide that. You don’t get to play with her life just to prove what you want!"

"I have every right! You are my son!" She snapped back; her voice was sharp and unyielding. "And I will do whatever it takes to protect you, to keep her away. So tell her to stay out of your life, or else—"

Before she could finish, I stepped forward, grabbing her by the neck. I pushed her back until her shoulders hit the wall, my grip firm but controlled.

"Or else what?" I said in a low, dangerous tone, my eyes locked on hers.
