Chapter 34: Jealous Evander
Chapter 34: Jealous Evander
Evander’s POV
My whole body froze when I heard a man’s voice coming from Claire’s apartment. My first instinct was to find him and make him regret showing up here in the middle of the night. How dare he come around and question us like he belonged here?
A fire started to burn inside me—something dark and possessive as jealousy surged through me that I couldn’t hold back. But what really stung was the way Claire’s face lit up when she saw him, like she was truly happy he was there.
My fists clenched, and my jaw tightened. Who did this guy think he was? And why did he get that smile from her—the one I had been waiting so long to see?
Claire pushed me aside, and any mood I had to tease her vanished. I was barely holding myself together, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. But when I turned to face the guy, I noticed he wasn’t alone. A woman was draped over his arm, clearly drunk and struggling to stay upright.
"Oh my gosh, Clinton!" Claire exclaimed, moving forward to take the girl from him. "Why are you here with this drunkard?"
"I am just here to drop her off," Clinton replied, his gaze shifting sharply to me. There was something in his look that made my fists clench, and I had to remind myself to stay calm. "By the way, Claire, who is this guy?" he asked as he nodded in my direction.
"Oh, he is..." Claire started, but before she could finish, I cut in.
"I am her husband," I said firmly, meeting Clinton’s eyes as I took over the answer.
"H-Husband?" Clinton nearly stumbled, looking at Claire with a confused expression, while Claire threw a sharp glare my way as she balanced the drunk woman in her arms.
"Well... I guess I will just... come back later," Clinton mumbled, backing toward the door but stopping when he caught the edge of my glare. "Alright, I am leaving!" he added quickly, clearly eager to escape the tension filling the room.
The woman in Claire’s arms blinked, looking up at me with hazy eyes. "Who is this guy, Clairy?" she slurred, then planted a sloppy kiss on Claire’s cheek. I flinched, feeling a wave of irritation I tried to shove down, but I couldn’t ignore how close she was to Claire or the way Claire seemed almost amused by the whole thing.
"Who is this lady?" I asked as I frowned my brows. I had never seen this person with Claire before.
"Her?" Claire pointed at the woman in her arms. "She is my best friend and roommate, Sissy!"
"Oh! Wasn’t your best friend, Susan?" I asked as I frowned my brows.
Claire’s POV
My whole body went tense at Evander’s words. How could he just say that Susan was my best friend? Was he seriously that clueless, or was he just trying to push my buttons until I lost it?
I took a deep breath, forcing myself to stay calm. "Susan is nothing to me. She was just a classmate," I replied curtly, settling Sissy down on the couch.
But his words lingered in my mind, stirring up memories. Once upon a time, he wasn’t entirely wrong— Susan and I had been close, almost inseparable. She was the one person I trusted when everything else felt impossible. But in the end... she hurt me in a way no one else ever could.
"Mr. Kensington, could you please stop prying into my personal life?" I said, my tone firm as I focused on taking Sissy’s shoes off. "I don’t want to share anything with you."
Evander’s eyes stayed on me, but I ignored the way he seemed to search my face for answers. I had no intention of talking about Susan or Clinton; just thinking about them was enough to put me on edge. I turned away, trying to keep my focus steady. "As for my father... I will handle things myself. I don’t need your help."
I knew he hated when I put distance between us, and maybe that’s why I did it. But what I couldn’t stand was how Evander still claimed to be my husband. Every time he said it, it only reminded me of everything I wanted to forget.
"You are so eager to put distance between us?" Evander said, his voice low as his eyes locked onto mine.
"Why shouldn’t I?" I shot back, meeting his gaze without hesitation. "I told you my reasons three years ago, and I am still sticking to them."
"Are you talking about that letter? He asked as he continued, "I won’t let you!" He replied firmly as he gripped my hand and pulled me closer until we were inches apart.
"And who do you think you are?" I demanded, tugging against his hold. "Am I some puppet for you to control? I have my own choices, and by that right, I don’t want you in my life anymore! And as for this distance... you were the one who created it, the one who made my life a living hell."
"Didn’t I already apologize?" he said, his voice rough with frustration. "I know I can’t undo the past, but even if it means tearing the world apart, I will find a way to make you mine again."
Before I could respond, his lips met mine, cold at first but softening as they lingered. I struggled, my mind screaming to resist, but his touch had a gentleness that began to weaken my resolve. And when the kiss deepened, I felt myself slipping, losing the anger I had held onto so tightly as my heart betrayed me in that moment.
I didn’t want to let this go on and I decided to...
