Chapter 33: "You Are Still My Wife!"

Evander’s POV

I was grateful Claire cared about Eliam. I couldn’t leave him with my mother or anyone else. All they did was cast shadows over him, making him feel unloved and unwanted.

When he was little, the maids took care of him. But they didn’t hold their tongues. I thought they were kind, but they gossiped about him when they thought no one was listening. They blamed him for things he couldn’t control, calling him unlucky, like he brought bad luck just by being born. It was cruel, and it hurt him in ways I hadn’t seen at first.

As he got older, it became worse. They weren’t just rude— they started hurting him. Pinching his arm when he cried, ignoring him when he was hungry, leaving him outside in the cold as "punishment." I was shocked. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it.

Strangely, it was Susan who helped me realize what was happening. She was the last person I wanted to owe, but she told me, ’Maybe you should see how he is treated when you are not around.’ That’s what she told me. I didn’t like her, but something told me she was serious. I couldn’t ignore it.

That night, I took Eliam home with me. He needed to feel safe, and I couldn’t trust anyone else to give him that. As we left, he held my hand tightly, his small fingers wrapping around mine, looking for comfort. I wouldn’t let him down again.

I couldn’t forget how Eliam looked at me that night, his big eyes full of hope. But now, seeing him lying comfortably on Claire’s chest made me feel a warmth I hadn’t felt in a long time. He looked safe with her, like he belonged there. Still, a part of me worried that taking care of him might be too much for her. I almost moved him away to let her rest, but Claire stopped me. She wanted him close, insisting he should stay with her. Watching her protect him like that made me admire her even more.

Finally, I had a chance to be with her, to spend time as a family, even just for a little while. It felt good—better than I’d imagined.

But then, Claire looked at me and suggested that I couldn’t stay with her. She wanted me to leave and let Eliam be with her.

I stood there, feeling the chance to close the distance slip through my fingers. But I couldn’t let it go—not this time. So, swallowing the hesitation, I leaned in close to her, my voice dropping to a whisper as I brushed a strand of her hair back, fingertips grazing her skin, igniting something deep inside me.

"Tell me, Claire," I murmured, my breath soft against her ear, "are you afraid you will fall in love with me?"

Her breath hitched, and she went rigid as her eyes widened just a little before she snapped back to herself. "You! What are you doing?" She hissed and clenched her teeth as she pushed me back. I didn’t move, though.

"I am your husband, and you are still my wife, Claire. Can’t you see that? How can you just push me and toss me aside like this?" My words came out rougher than I intended, and I saw her flinch.

She shoved me harder, and this time, I let her. Her eyes blazed as she looked up at me, fierce and defiant, reminding me of the very first night we’d met. That fire had always been there. "You are making this feel just like the night I just arrived," she said, storming out of the bedroom but gesturing for me to follow.

"Let’s talk outside," she muttered, glancing toward the bed where Eliam lay sleeping. "I don’t want him to wake up."

Claire’s POV

My heart was almost ready to come out of my ribcage. It was making me to crazy. His touch on my skin earlier burnt. However, I didn’t want him to know that. No matter what kind of affect he had on me, I wouldn’t let him find it.

I just ran out of the room and asked him to follow me. But he didn’t come out right away. He took his time.

"Sorry, I was covering Eliam," Evander said, making me look at him as if I were looking at an alien.

Sorry? You didn’t say that when you ruined my life! How could you?! I thought as I gestured him to sit across from me.

"What do you want?" I asked as he took a seat.

"You! I want you!" Evader responded within a breath. He hadn’t even tore his gaze off of me since he had entered the room.

Just what the hell are you planning? You bastard!

My eyes were locked on him as I was speechless! I thought he might say something about being sorry and other things... but he just went ahead and told me that he wanted me! How brave was he!? Did he think that I would just go running to him?

Impossible!

I was still in my thoughts when I found Evander right in front of me, leaning just like in the bedroom.

"What would you like me to do with your father?" He asked as he looked directly into my eyes. "Though I have many ideas for him!"

"Mr. Kensingtone," I said in a low tone as I put my hands on his chest and continued. "Can you not come so close and talk from a distance!?"

We were still so indulgent in our conversation that we had not noticed the apartment door had opened and someone had walked in.

"What the hell are you two doing!?"

It was a familiar voice, but what shocked me was his presence! I peaked out as Evander still towered me and asked, "Why are you here?" I was pleasantly surprised.
