Chapter 428: He wants to meet you?
"Linda frowned at the sight of Karl’s pale face. The way he stared at her with utter shock made her wonder as if she had caught him red-handed.
"Karl, aren’t you going to invite me?" ignoring the paleness on his face, she asked forcing a polite smile.
Karl’s hand around the doorknob tightened and he immediately screamed. ’’LINDA, WHAT A PLEASANT SURPRISE." he purposely raised his voice letting Gwen know about her visit.
Linda knitted her brows, confused with the way Karl was shouting at her arrival. She found him acting even more strange but didn’t voice it out.
Gwen on the other hand jumped at his voice, but the words she heard made her drop the knife as she shot her head in the direction of the kitchen door and whispered.
"Linda... what is she doing here?" her eyes fluttered nervously and she quickly looked back, heaving out a restless breath.
Meanwhile outside Linda heard a sound coming from inside and she immediately asked, "Is there someone with you"
She sounded a little suspicious trying to peek inside the house, but Karl quickly blocked her way and closed the door a little.
"No!.. there is no one with me" he quickly responded and watched her arch her brow.
"B-but I heard a sound coming from inside" Linda was sure she heard the sound of something falling, yet Karl was declining her doubt.
She felt like he was purposely denying her claims because there was surely someone with him inside and he didn’t want her to meet them.
Karl’s actions lately had planted the seed of doubt within her mind. His constant ignorance of her calls and text message made her suspicious of him.
She tried seeking help from Ryan, but the man wasn’t ready to entertain her either. Drowning himself in alcohol the man always appeared to be drunk in front of her.
In the end, left with no other choice she had to deal with everything on her own. Back then when she visited him, his watchman said he wasn’t home and was out for some work.
She didn’t want to believe him but when she saw the lock in his apartment, she had to leave without any further inquiry.
But now two days passed since her last visit and she decided to come back again and this time she didn’t see the same guard outside. So, taking the chance to sneak in Linda bribed the guard and walked in, only to find Karl was back.
But sensing he wasn’t alone made her curious. She didn’t want to doubt him, but knowing how she didn’t entirely trust him there wasn’t any reason not to be suspicious about him.
"I did hear a sound Karl" She urged her claim and pushed him aside, barging into the house.
Roaming her eyes everywhere, she was only welcomed by silence. But that didn’t stop her from doubting.
"Maybe it’s from the kitchen," she said and quickly sprinted towards the kitchen only to find no inside.
Her eyes squinted at the empty space but then she noticed the knife resting on the ground. Picking up, she looked around and found the kitchen island a mess.
"So, he was all alone preparing lunch for himself" she muttered eyeing the place for a few seconds before heaving out a breath in relief.
Placing the knife back on the kitchen island she then turned around only to find, Karl standing by the door frame looking at her with a terrified gaze.
Karl almost forgot to breathe, but when his eyes looked around, he fell confused.
’Where is Gwen’ he thought when suddenly Linda spoke breaking his chain of thoughts.
"The sound came from the knife," she said pointing at the resting knife, and continued," It fell down"
"Oh..." she only heard him say, but deep down it made her feel guilty about her actions.
Clasping her palms together Linda chewed her lips nervously. The way she refused to listen to him earlier made her regret her actions. And now she was worried about how she would defend herself.
Karl watched her stand there in silence, fidgeting her fingers anxiously. He could see she was regretting her actions and that’s what made him put on his act.
"If you are done examining the kitchen, should we head out" he returned to his original self putting on a serious look and asked.
Linda sensed his displeased tone and lowered her head. Silently giving him a nod she followed him out towards the living hall.
"Please have a seat," Karl said pointing at the couch and watched her quietly follow his words like an obedient child.
As they both settled down in their respective seats, Linda quickly apologized.
"I am sorry... Karl. I shouldn’t have barged in just like that. But-" she paused trying to think of a convincing excuse when Karl cut in.
"But you thought maybe I was someone or perhaps that someone was Gwen. Am I right" his words left Linda in shock.
She did doubt him to be with her even though she knew they had already broken up. It was the lack of trust that made her doubt him, but now she felt like falling right on her face.
His words sounded so cold that she felt a shiver run down her spine, but instead of denying it she simply bobbed her head.
"I am sorry" This time she genuinely apologized which made Karl arch his brow in amusement.
"I thought you were purposely ignoring me. It had been four days since we last saw each other but never once you contacted me back. I thought maybe you regretted saying those words and were now having second thoughts" Linda didn’t hold back what she felt.
She didn’t care what he thought about her. All she wanted to hear was his response. She wanted to hear the truth. Was he seriously having second thoughts? Was he taking back those words he said?
Karl remained quiet and let her vent out her thoughts. His eyes and ears were all on her and when she was done, he finally heaved out a sigh.
"Why would you think I would be having a second thought? Wasn’t I clear with my words before" he asked making her look at him.
Linda simply bobbed her head without uttering a word.
"Then why don’t you believe me," he asked.
Linda pursed her lips into a thin line as she could fathom any words. If she happened to speak her mind, he will only think of her as a pushover. Someone who is forcing him to take responsibility.
She just wanted to be cautious with her action and words. Or else he would start doubting her.
"I am sorry" she could only apologize.
This was her third time apologizing to him. It made Karl wonder what had gotten into her and why was she so desperate to meet him.
Without pondering much on the matter, Karl asked, "What brings you here? Is there anything you want to talk" his eyes keenly observed her as she bit her lips and balled her palm into a tight fist.
"My grandfather, he came to learn about us and now he wants to meet you" she spat taking Karl by surprise.
His eyes turned cold and his face darken. They had just happened to talk about it a few days back, but she had already managed to let her grandfather find out about them
’Such a cunning woman’
Linda was waiting to hear from him but when he didn’t speak she raised her head and looked at him.
"When" she suddenly heard him speak, but the look she saw in his eyes left her confused. They seem so empty and blank with no ounce of emotions in them.
’Did I make a mistake letting my grandfather’s men see us’ she thought suddenly feeling anxious by his reaction.
"A-anytime, whenever you are free," she said hesitatingly.
Heaving out a sigh, He bobbed his head." I will let you by tomorrow" he said and she agreed to him.
Sitting there quietly for a few more seconds, Linda then got up to leave. "I think I should go now. I have things to finish" she said making her way towards the door.
Karl simply nod his head and watched her walk out of the house and quickly shut the door.
Closing his eyes he tried to calm his nerves when suddenly something popped into his mind and he quickly rushed to look for Gwen, but stopped when the door of their bedroom opened and Gwen peeked out.
"Did she leave?" she asked scanning her eyes all around the living hall.
Watching her in front of his eyes, Karl sigh deeply before rushing towards her and pulling her out of the room.
"Yes, she is gone" he answered and pulled her in his embrace.
Gwen was still wearing the apron, which only meant that she sneak into the bedroom even before Linda could enter the house.
"I am sorry I failed to see the screen before opening the door" Karl apologized for his mistake that ended up landing both of them in trouble.
Gwen remained quiet and hugged him back. Once they both were calm and composed, they pulled back, when suddenly Gwen ask, "Are you sure you want to meet her grandfather?"
