Chapter 82: Chapter 82: Tax (III)

Now that Nora was sleeping right next to him in his bed, how could he let that go? He already went so far as to bring her back anyway, it would be a waste to let her go.

Thus, he said, "D-don’t worry, I will find a way."

"What way?" Nora chuckled mirthlessly. "It’s alright, Roger. I understand your position. I also don’t want you to be in danger just because of this. It’s not worth ruining your company over."

"Or..." Nora paused for a second. She glanced at the hanged picture of Roger and little Pierre. He was around six years old then, looking very innocent, and sticking to his dad like glue.

Of course, Roger knew what Nora wanted him to do. She wanted him to sacrifice Pierre in exchange for the company’s safety, and to find another way to mess with Alex and Eve.

Roger swallowed his saliva. He felt strangely nervous. Though he was very dissatisfied with how dumb and weak his son turned out to be, Roger still had a fatherly love for him. He wouldn’t sacrifice his son to the beast to save his ass.

"Nora, that’s not fair for him—"

"It’s either him, or me," Nora said with a smile, but the words from her lips were poisonous. "You can send your son to face Alex, or you can say bye-bye to our relationship."

Roger’s face paled instantly, "H-how about I call Alex again, and admit that I am the one who leaked those documents? I’ll promise him that I’d never do anything else after that."

"What benefits will I get by staying on your side? You’re certainly not as handsome or powerful as Hugh, nor that you’re better in bed. I decided to stay with you for the past two years because I want to help my son," Nora countered ruthlessly.

She wasn’t scared that Roger would be angry and kick her out. She knew full well how smitten he was with her. She even remembered how Roger didn’t shed a single tear when Natasha Langford—his wife—died.

So, Nora boldly demanded her right, since sticking with Roger wasn’t exactly pleasant to begin with.

Roger could feel his heart getting stung by those words. But she wasn’t wrong.

She already made it clear from the beginning that she stayed with Roger only for those reasons. She wouldn’t even spare a glance at him if not for the benefits he gave.

Facing the difficult choices, he began pondering, ’Surely, Pierre will be fine if I send him to Alex’s mansion, right? Alex might beat him up until he’s satisfied, but he surely won’t kill his own cousin, right?’ Roger started considering it seriously. ’Pierre will live to see another day, but what about me? I might lose my company or lose my woman.’

Thus, after giving it some thought, Roger finally made his choice.

"So, what will you do next?" Nora asked impatiently. "If you can’t bear to send your son, then so be it. I will leave."

Nora wanted to get up and leave, but Roger grabbed her wrist, "Wait, I’ve made my decision."

"So? What will you do next?" Nora asked.

...

Roger took a deep breath and replied, "I’ll send Pierre to meet with Alex. He might suffer, but he will live to see another day."

Nora smiled. She returned to his embrace and pinched his cheek, "That’s a good boy. Of course, Pierre will live to see another day. My son might be cruel, but he won’t murder his cousin over this. Besides, Pierre is already twenty-seven. He should be able to fetch for himself. He shouldn’t be hiding under your armpit forever."

Roger still felt unwilling at heart. He scolded his son often, but Pierre was still his only son, and a good, obedient child that wouldn’t say no to anything Roger told him to do, including getting engaged with Evelyn, or stealing her company’s classified documents.

But he had to be selfish, at least for the greater good.

"Yeah, you’re right. He can fetch for himself..."

Alex stayed inside his study after he had a gym session in the mansion. His mind had cleared up after taking a shower and was now ready to hear the answer from his uncle.

He checked his phone, and saw no notification. So he thought that his uncle was probably racking his brain right now, trying to find a way out.

However, he knew that his uncle loved his company too much to let it go down, so Alex believed that he would try his best to stop Alex from leaking these documents.

’I wonder what will you do, Uncle,’ Alex smirked as he waited for the big show.

He sipped his coffee as he continued his work in his study. Then, he heard a knock on the door.

"Sir, we have a guest. He said he’s here according to your summon," Don, his butler, said from outside.

Alex frowned.

He didn’t remember inviting anyone into this mansion, at least not today.

"Who is he?" Alex asked.

"It’s Mr. Pierre Dust. Your cousin," Don said with a hint of contempt in his voice. "He said he has been summoned by you."

Alex’s brows creased even deeper as he didn’t expect Pierre to actually come after hiding away from him for so long.

Of course, Alex wouldn’t expect him to just come unprompted. His dearest father must’ve sent Pierre to the gallow just to save his company.

’I thought he wouldn’t dare to send his son here. I guess even his fatherly love is nothing but a farce,’ Alex scoffed in contempt. ’I know my family is full of rotten people, but this just takes the cake, huh? To sacrifice your only son to save your ass.’

Alex was a little disappointed that his uncle would surrender so easily, but no matter, as long as he could stop them from leaking documents.

"Let him in. I want to talk with my cousin," Alex replied coldly.
