Chapter 67: Chapter 67: His Sister in Seattle
Alex ate the fruits prepared by the butler as he checked his email in the study. He was still wearing his pajamas while sipping his coffee.
The sliced fruit tasted ten times better than usual because Eve was the one who told the butler to prepare it for him.
’It’d taste a hundred times better if she’s the one who cuts it for me, just like before,’ Alex thought. ’For the twenty-nine years I’ve lived, those five years we were together were truly the highlight of my life. Everything was so beautiful that I thought I was slumbering and falling into a midsummer daydream for five years straight.’
Alex stared at the sliced fruits and recalled how Eve would sometimes get so caught up with work that her cuts weren’t even, or she would just cut the apple in half and leave the half for Alex before leaving.
Sometimes, the coffee that she brewed for both of them was a bit too bitter for Alex’s taste, but he still drank it with relish.
He knew how thoughtful she was despite being busy, so he never complained.
Besides, Alex had never been so cared for in his life before.
His father was so busy with work and refused to pay him attention, and his mother was an abusive bitch. So, he was raised by nannies.
He grew up isolated because of his special position as the sole heir of Langford family, and the moment he could finally break free from his parents once he entered university, the first woman he ever fell in love with was none other than Evelyn Carpenter.
That beautiful, but prickly rose who always sat alone in the campus library, ignoring everyone as she buried herself with the stacks of books on the table.
It was a love at first sight that was difficult to describe. The moment he saw her, he knew he wanted her to be his wife no matter what.
So he did everything—absolutely everything to get her attention—even if he had to lie about his family background to make her open up slowly.
"And I become desperate, wanting to return to that old life with you, Sweetheart," Alex muttered. "I can’t picture a future without you as my wife. It’s just impossible."
Alex sighed and finished his breakfast. Then, he continued checking on a few emails before his phone suddenly rang.
He picked up the call once he saw the caller ID.
—
"I thought you’d be uncontactable for a while since you’re searching for your half-sister somewhere in Seattle."
"Well, I should. But I saw the news yesterday about the leaked document and thought that I should give you a call," Josh said on the phone. "Did you go to meet with your mother in Roger’s office? If my information is correct, she has been going in and out of his office for years."
Alex clenched the phone. His gaze darkened as the topic was about his mother, "Yes, it is her. I saw her with my own eyes."
"I thought your father forbids her to ever return to the States?" Josh asked. "After she got caught red-handed for... you know."
"She has never been the one to follow rules," Alex said. "Don’t worry, I’ll keep her in check. I’ll see what she will do next before reacting. Also, how’s your trip to Seattle? Got any leads?"
"It’s only been a day since I’ve arrived, so no, not really," Josh sighed. "It’s really hard when there’s no lead. But my gut feeling told me that my little sister must be somewhere in Seattle."
Alex remembered that Eve had come from Seattle before she left for university. She could’ve helped him to go around Seattle spots if necessary.
However, Alex’s chest got stuffy thinking of how he had to fight with his beloved just because of Josh, so he decided to keep his silence and gave Josh more money and intel to look around for what he needed. He believed that money and intel were more useful for Josh.
"So, about your girlfriend..."
"What about her?" Alex asked curtly.
"Whoa, chill, Romeo. I’m just asking if she’s okay. Since the leaked document can be detrimental to her company’s reputation."
"She’s fine. I paid for the financial damage, and told the CEO of Honor Company to stop making trouble," Alex said lightly. "If you have nothing else to talk about, then I’ll hang up."
"Damn, one mentions about her, and you already thought that she’s having an affair with me. Are you sure that you’re still sane at this point?" Josh called him out of his possessiveness.
"Heh, I am insanely in love," Alex admitted without a single hesitation in his voice. "So, you can stop asking about her. She’ll be just fine as long as she’s with me."
"Alright then. I’ll continue searching for my half-sister in Seattle. I still believe she is in here, somewhere, and still alive... hopefully."
"Good luck, Josh."
Beep.
—
Joshua pocketed his phone. He stared at the brothel door in front of him. It was disguised as a strip club that only opened at night, but it was mostly just for hookers.
His late father didn’t say much about the identity of this woman who was pregnant with his little sister, but he mentioned something about meeting in a strip club during one of his business trips around thirty years ago.
Hence, Josh had been trying to find a clue in every strip club in the States.
Josh chuckled as he found himself ridiculous, "Why am I searching for a woman who’s probably dead at this point and an imaginary little sister who might’ve been aborted thirty years ago? It’s so stupid."
Josh knew that his search was probably in vain.
But his heart told him that his little sister was out there, still alive and kicking. Clutching on that belief, he continued searching restlessly as he felt responsible for what his father had done to this innocent little girl.
’Sister, wait for me, I’ll find you and protect you. I’ll make up for all the pain you must’ve experienced for almost thirty years.’
