Chapter 49: Dinner Contract
Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Dinner Contract
"It’s settled then. We will take turns cooking for dinner daily unless we get too busy. Don’t worry about the dishes, I’ll wash them all by myself," Alex stated.
"W-w-wait, I haven’t said anything yet!" Eve was flustered as his statement felt like a seal that bound her to restart that beautiful, but simple life they had before. She didn’t want to relive that sweet life, because she knew it would only make her vulnerable and weak in front of him—the man who lied to her for five years.
"Hm? I thought it was you who offered to cook dinner for us," Alex grinned, knowing he had trapped Eve into this routine. "Do you want another arrangement? Perhaps every two days? Or every weekend?"
"I-I will cook whenever I have time. But you can’t say anything if it’s not to your liking," Eve warned.
"When did I ever spit out the food that you made? I would even lick the bowl clean as I can’t wait for the next meal," Alex stated, and Eve rolled her eyes instantly.
"Oh, you can be so unbelievably cheesy, Mr. Langford," Eve said, knowing that Alex was just making things up to get his free meal.
Nevertheless, she didn’t mind making dinner for the two of them whenever she felt like it. She just didn’t want it to be a regular thing, since it would remind her of the past.

They had dinner in peace, though that peace would soon be broken when Eve asked, "About that friend of yours—"
Alex stopped eating immediately.
He gave Eve a quick glance-up, before returning to his plate, "You don’t need to know him. He’s just a... colleague."
"Colleague? I don’t think you’d allow a colleague to come here," Eve said.
"He’s no one important, so don’t think too much about him," Alex quickly shifted the topic. "By the way, you’ll return to your office by tomorrow morning, right?"
Eve could tell that Alex didn’t like talking about his friend, but she felt that man was more important than he let on, so she asked bluntly, "Can I get his contact then?"
CLANK!
Alex intentionally stabbed the plate with his fork, making a loud sound to tell Eve that he didn’t like this conversation. He had always done this as a warning ever since they were dating.
Alex lifted his gaze. His smile had disappeared, but he didn’t give Eve that cold gaze as if he was looking at an insect.
Instead, Alex’s gaze darkened as he asked in a calm, but pressuring manner, "Remember our deal, Eve. I will protect your company from Roger and Pierre. I’ll also give you anything that you want as long as you carry my baby."
"Naturally, I remember."
"That contract includes limiting your contact with another man," Alex stated firmly. "You’re not allowed to talk with those bastards unnecessarily."
"Your friend just feels... familiar to me. That’s why I want to talk with him," Eve explained. She might be the first one who was bold enough to argue against Alex when he was pissed. "I’m not thinking about dating him or anything. But maybe we are real—"
"Evelyn," Alex interrupted. "Don’t test my patience. I will never hurt you, but I can’t say the same to that bastard."
Eve’s lips thinned, "Even if that bastard is your friend?"
Alex felt uncomfortable in his heart right now. Josh was his best friend, but the way Eve and Josh acted as if they had a deeper connection with just one gaze made him restless and jealous, and this feeling made Alex unable to process his actions logically.
He was overridden by anger right now.
"I can send him away from you. What do you think happened to those men who tried to approach you back then?" Alex threatened. "So, don’t test my patience, Eve. Don’t ever talk to Josh, or any man, at least until our contract has been nullified."
Eve rolled her eyes. She crossed her arms and asked him, "Do you know how controlling you can be?"
"I know," Alex nodded. "That’s why I don’t plan to hide anything from you. Yes, I am controlling, and yes, I am jealous. That doesn’t change the fact that you and I are bound by our contract, Evelyn."
"And I can finally talk to any man I want after we end our contract, right?" Eve challenged. "That contract has an expiry date, Alexander."
Eve jolted when Alex suddenly slammed the table. He got up and stared down at Eve with his cold blue eyes.
She thought that Alex would finally show her that condescending gaze, just like how his father stared down at her before.
But he didn’t.
All Eve saw was anger and sadness swirling in his eyes and translated with his expression. His jaw clenched as he probably held back many cruel words he wanted to throw at Eve.
In the end, he simply turned around to leave.
"Where are you going? We’re not done talking!"
"We are. I’d hurt you with my words if we keep on arguing," Alex said as he looked over his shoulder.
"You’re being unreasonable!" Eve exclaimed as she stood up as well.
"And so are you," Alex responded nonchalantly. "Just obey the contract, Eve. Or perhaps, do you want me to make it official, with stamps and all? I don’t mind binding you with law."
"That—" Eve was speechless with that statement. She knew better than to push his limit, knowing that Alex could change the content of the contract easily since he had a lot of connections and power within the laws as well.
Eve’s silence was an affirmation that she didn’t want to be bound by a legal contract, and Alex scoffed in full disdain, "You think that I’ll change the contract after you sign it, right? You can’t even trust me, so why should I trust your words, Evelyn? You’ll never meet that bastard or any other men as long as you’re with me."
With that, Alex walked out of the dining hall and headed straight to his study.
