Chapter 47: Chapter 47: Searching for My Half-Sister
"Stop dilly-dallying and tell me now," Alex demanded.
Josh walked towards Alex’s side and learned to whisper in his ear.
Alex’s gaze darkened as Josh dropped the name on his ear, because that name quickly filled his brain, and forced him to recall many bad memories about her.
He clenched the armrests as he tried to calm himself down. That’s right, that name was enough to send him into a frenzy. How he wished that bitch would never appear in his life anymore.
Alex took another deep breath, but this one was obviously heavier than before, "Are you sure that your information is credible?"
"I am sure," Josh replied as he took a step back. "That woman came to Roger’s office a week ago, seemingly distraught. I don’t know what business she has with Roger Dust, but I’m sure it involves you, who knows if it involves Evelyn as well?"
Of course, Alex knew that it must’ve involved him. That woman never seemed to rest and leave him alone for one second. She was overbearing and hypocritical.
But he didn’t expect her to know about Evelyn. Nobody else had found out about their relationship until Alex decided to go public today during the family function.
There was a long silence between them, and Josh could tell that Alex was thinking hard about how to make sure that woman stayed away from Evelyn.
After all, he couldn’t just threaten this woman like he threatened the other obstacles in his life since Alex held a very sentimental feeling for this woman.
Josh guessed this woman must be as important as Evelyn in Alex’s heart.
’Are you going to go against her, Alex? No matter what, she is your mo—’
"Thank you for the information. I’ll find a way to deal with her later," Alex interrupted calmly despite the brewing storm in his heart. "You can leave now."
"... Alex, your promise."
"I know. What do you want? Money or my connection to continue searching for your long-lost half-sister?" Alex asked. He already knew what his best friend wanted, so he didn’t beat around the bush.
Josh chuckled, "I need your connection for now since I have enough money to continue searching. My father went on a long trip around the country when he was in his prime, so I had to search for every nook and cranny to get a lead. I’ll go to Seattle for a month at least."
Alex sighed, "Look, I don’t mind giving you all the intel I have, or all the money you need. But you’ve been searching for this ’missing half-sister of yours for three years straight. Maybe your father was just rambling about nonsense on his deathbed."
Josh chuckled. He wasn’t offended by Alex’s statement, because it was logical.
He had been searching for his half-sister for three years without any result, but he kept searching, desperately hoping that she was still alive somewhere.
To those who didn’t share this sentimental feeling he had, Josh would look like a desperate madman.
"My late father said lots of nonsense back then. But this isn’t one of them," Josh stated firmly. "When he told me that I have a half-sister born from the belly of a whore, I knew he was telling the truth. His last words before he took his last breath was for me to find my half-sister, because she too, deserves to be saved and have a good life."
Josh smiled bitterly, "I will find her someday. I just have to keep searching."
"Even without your mother’s support?" Alex asked.
Josh nodded full of confidence.
"Even if she refuses to help me, I have to use my own money and connection to find my half-sister. I will still try," Josh said. "You were born as an only child, Alex. To you, a sibling might be a hassle, but to me, I cannot imagine the hell my little sister must’ve been through at this point. I have to save her."
...
Alex didn’t understand Josh sometimes. He was so sentimental over this ’half-sister’ that might or might not exist.
However, he was genuinely impressed by how firm Josh’s belief was, so the least he could do as Josh’s best friend was to support him.
"Will you continue searching by visiting every brothel in Seattle to find the hooker who slept with your father?"
Josh nodded.
"Then what would you do once you met your half-sister? I doubt she’d believe you if you said you’re her half-brother."
"I... plan to share the inheritance my dad left us. I couldn’t be there to protect her when she was young, but I can protect her now," Josh said.
Alex’s lips thinned.
His heart felt heavy for his friend. He wanted to tell Josh to stop searching. After all, there were a lot of hookers who ended up pregnant on the job and aborted their babies because nobody would take care of those children.
But the smart thing to do right now was to keep his silence.
"Well, that’s all the information I could give you. It’s up to you on what to do next. Just don’t count on me for whatever plan you have for the next month, because I won’t be here," Josh said before turning around and opening the door. Before he left, he asked, "Alex, can I talk to Eve for—"
CRACK!
Josh was petrified when Alex threw a small ceramic pot on his desk to the wall right next to the door until it was shattered into pieces.
"Don’t test my patience, Josh."
"O-okay, sorry, sorry," Josh raised his hand as he quickly regained his composure. He had never seen Alex so hostile to him before. So he was serious when he said Eve was the love of his life back then. "Don’t worry, I won’t ask you anything about her anymore. Besides, I’m not interested in her in that way. I’m just... a bit curious."
Josh quickly closed the door and left before Alex got up from his chair and slapped his head off. He halted his step as he stared at Eve’s bedroom door.
"Evelyn..."
