Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Hugh Langford (IV)

Hugh turned away from them, staring at the golf course from the glass pane.

Alex gritted his teeth. His dad’s reaction was way out of his expectations, and he already planned to return here to give his father a piece of his mind later.

But for now, he needed to take Eve away before things got ugly and made her reconsider staying with him.

This time, Eve finally followed Alex out of the room. Before she left, she looked over her shoulder, staring at Hugh Langford, who was looking at her like an insect.

Her eyes were filled with determination with no ounce of fear towards the patriarch before she slowly closed the door.

Hugh kept staring at the door before he called his secretary.

"Miranda."

"Yes, Sir," the secretary approached Mr. Langford, awaiting his order.

"Find out about that woman’s identity. My son told me that she is just a regular woman who comes from a simple family, but the stubbornness in her eyes tells me that she had lived a very difficult life before," Hugh said.

Miranda, his loyal secretary, was a bit hesitant, "I can do that, Sir. But what if Young Master noticed me prying into his woman’s private life? Wouldn’t it be bad for your relationship with him? You two already have a very strained..."

"It doesn’t matter. I wouldn’t live for a long time anyway," Hugh said. "But I cannot allow him to pick the wrong woman. For his sake, and also for the sake of the Langford family."

Miranda was even more hesitant now.

"From what I’ve observed just now, Evelyn Carpenter doesn’t seem to be a bad woman, Sir," Miranda said. "Would she truly be a bad influence for Young Master?"

"She’s not a bad influence. She’s far from that. I can feel the burning passion between them," Hugh deduced. "But she is definitely loyal to a fault. She’s the do-or-die woman. I can see that she will do anything once she decides that she’d spend the rest of her life with my son, and Alex will naturally be madly in love with her."

Miranda was even more confused now because based on Mr. Langford’s assessment, Evelyn should be a perfect woman for Alex.

"Yes, she is a perfect woman for Alex. But do you not realize what makes me able to stay in power for so long, Miranda?" Hugh asked while slowly shifting his gaze at her.

Miranda pondered for a moment and replied, "Your ruthlessness, Sir..."

Hugh nodded.

"This family is full of rotten people. They will do anything to stay in power, even if that means they have to sacrifice someone else," Hugh said. "I don’t have any attachment to any of them, even to my wife and son, so I can always make rational decisions. Do you understand why I don’t want my son to be with his perfect woman?"

...

Miranda nodded reluctantly.

She understood now, but it pained her.

"You don’t want the Young Master to be in love, Sir..."

"Love is a weakness, Miranda," Hugh added. "That boy is already emotional. What if something happened to that young woman? What if she dies? What do you think will happen to him?"

Miranda gulped.

"He might—"

"—Kill himself, yes," Hugh sighed as he returned to his seat. He lit another cigar and puffed the smoke as he stared at the window. "Killing that young woman is not hard. She’s petite, easily provoked, and weak. What would happen if one of my family members killed her? That lovesick boy will probably follow her to the afterlife."

"Then, who do you think would be a better candidate to be Young Master’s wife, Sir?"

"A woman whom he tolerates, but has zero feelings for. So, in case she got killed or kidnapped, my son wouldn’t be affected at all," Hugh replied. "Alex’s mother already proposed a woman that might fit the criteria, but I’ll see into that later."

"Just give me all the information about that woman—Evelyn Carpenter," Hugh ordered once more.

"Yes, Sir. I will collect her data. What would you do next once you’ve gathered her information?"

"I’ll see if I can somehow make her initiate the breakup. Alex can’t do that. If I force him, he will start retaliating recklessly," Hugh replied. "Despite being emotional and stupid like his mother, Alex still has all of my talents. He might burn the whole family to the ground just to avenge his woman."

"I... I can see that, Sir..." Miranda nodded. "After all, he built this exclusive golf club all by himself when he was twenty-two, just to prove to you that he’s far more capable despite his young age."

Hugh never doubted his son’s capability. Alex had all it took to be the next patriarch. Hugh even had a hunch that Alex could raise the Langford family’s power and wealth to an unimaginable level with his talents.

But emotion is a weakness, and Alex’s fatal flaw would be his deep love for that woman.

Hugh sighed.

He still remembered Evelyn’s beautiful face and those eyes filled with burning fury. She was truly perfect for his son, and Hugh was mourning for the loss of a perfect daughter-in-law.

’I am sorry, little girl. As much as I like you to be my daughter-in-law, this rotten place is not for you. You should abort that baby and leave. That’s for the best if you want to live in peace.’

Alex and Eve walked through another corridor leading to the main lobby. Eve wasn’t all that bothered after arguing with Alex’s father, because she thought that she had the right to defend herself.

Gradually, her annoyance died down as they left Hugh’s room.

Alex’s face didn’t look as good.

He was pissed and kept gnashing his teeth as they entered his car.

Alex kept his silence as they drove off of the golf club. He glanced at her a few times on their way home.

"If you want to say anything, say it," Eve said calmly. "You keep looking at me and gnashing your teeth. Are you angry at me?"
