Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Hugh Langford (III)

Hugh ignored his son. He kept his eyes on Eve and said, "Miss Carpenter, you are a gorgeous woman. With all my sobriety and clear-headedness, I can admit that you are one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen in my life. I also heard from the main hall that you are a businesswoman who owns an advertising agency. One of my companies might have used your service to make an advertisement before."

"You could’ve taken the easy route by becoming a model or an actress with your looks, but you choose to be a businesswoman instead. As much as this recognition goes, your portfolio has impressed me, Miss Carpenter," Hugh said. But the way he looked at her felt insulting, as it felt like he was appraising her worth as an item.

This time, Eve didn’t thank him, fearing that he would cut her off again and make her look like an idiot.

She thought right because he soon followed up that compliment with another condescending statement.

"But I can see that my stupid son is not in the right mind. You would make a great wife for any man out there," Hugh paused for a moment and his gaze darkened, full of hostility towards Eve. "But not for my son, and not for this family."

Eve was stupefied by that statement. For some reason, it didn’t seem to be out of hostility or hatred. It was out of concern, at least that was what Eve felt.

Alex glanced at his beloved and saw that Eve looked defeated by that statement. He didn’t care about what his father said about them, but he cared when Eve looked sad.

So he wrapped his hand around her body and pulled her closer until there was no gap between them.

"Then what do you want, Dad? Do you want me to find a woman like Mom? Hah, your taste in women is always terrible, thinking about it makes me sick."

"I am speaking out of facts, boy. This woman standing next to you is not suitable for our family," Hugh stated. "I saw how she was trembling as you kissed and hugged her in the corridor just now, and I know that she is a weak woman despite her tough shell. She might be naive, vulnerable, and kind. Do you think we need those qualities to lead the Langford family?"

"I am the one who will be in charge anyway. As long as Eve is by my side, we will be fine!"

"Hah. As expected, you are an emotional creature. It is my fault to produce an offspring with your mother," Hugh sneered. "This woman is a liability. She will only drag you down in the future, and I don’t want you to suffer because of your wrong choice. If you simply want a beautiful woman to play in bed, then you can always find them anywhere. They might not be as beautiful as her, but they would suffice for a night or two."

"YOU—!"

Eve saw that Alex was actually angry at his father. He had always kept his composure until now, so she wondered if he got angry because his mother was mentioned, or if was it because of her.

Or maybe both?

When they were still dating, Alex only told her that his mother was ’a bitch’. He never mentioned anything in detail, but Eve assumed that she had the same profession as her mother, which she called a ’whore’.

After his lies were exposed, she thought that he must’ve had a perfect family, unlike her.

But it turned out there was something deeper going on in his family.

Eve continued listening to them arguing with each other. They slowly raised their voices one after another, and it seemed like a fight between a father and son would break out soon.

Hugh looked as pissed as his son. He finally had enough and shifted his gaze to Eve once more.

"You should’ve known that we are not a normal family, Miss Carpenter."

"Yes, I... acknowledge that," Eve affirmed.

"Then, you should know your limit. This family has a bunch of vicious dogs, ready to maul you if you’re careless," Hugh warned sternly. "My son can be careless and ignorant, but I’m sure that you’re not. You should leave him now before it’s too late."

...

"Maybe you’re right, Sir..." Eve muttered.

Alex stared at Eve in horror. He brought her here to make sure that his father knew about her existence. After all, he had planned to introduce her back then. It was unfortunate that they broke up, so his plan was delayed for two years.

But seeing how much pressure Eve was getting from his father, Alex realized he might’ve made a mistake. So he quickly interrupted, "I’m here to introduce her to you, not to listen to your nonsense, Dad. We’ll leave now."

Alex was about to pull Eve out of the room, but Eve stood on her ground and stared at Hugh with determination in her eyes.

"Eve?" Alex asked. "Let’s just go. There’s no point in listening to him."

Eve still didn’t budge from her position.

"Sir, Alex and I have been going strong for seven years. I’ve dated him even when he told me that he had nothing. What makes you think that I will leave just because you said so?"

Hugh raised his brows. He was surprised by her response.

"Young woman, I am telling you to leave him for your own sake."

"Then I am ready to give you an answer, Sir," Eve paused for a second and said, "I will stay with him."

"Eve..."

"You’re digging your own grave, young woman. This family is not the right environment for a naive woman like you," Hugh warned. Eve had no answer to that because she also didn’t know to what extent Alex’s family would go to harm her, but she had decided that she wouldn’t leave.

Hugh started to get irritated and said, "Tsk, just get out, you two. I have no use talking to stupid kids."
