Chapter 32: Chapter 32: I want to meet your family first
At noon, Eve was busy in her room, working on the upcoming advertisement project. This project was actually in jeopardy because the file about the product’s details was on the documents that Pierre had stolen. There was a high chance of him leaking the product before it was supposed to be released, or sending the product’s details to its competitor.
Of course, the company would sue her agency if that happened, and she had to pay millions of dollars worth of lawsuits, which would definitely end up with her bankruptcy.
’As long as that bum hasn’t done anything yet, I can just work as usual. Let’s see what he will do next,’ Eve kept telling herself the same sentence to calm her restlessness.
She continued working like a madwoman until dusk, when Alex knocked on the door.
"Dinner’s ready," Alex said from the other side of the door.
"You can eat without me. I’m not hungry," Eve replied as her eyes were still glued to her laptop screen.
Alex knew how workaholic Eve could be, to the point she would skip meals just to get her work done. It was also the reason why the employees in the agency called her the Iron Lady, as her work hours could kill someone.
Since Eve had skipped lunch, he knew she would skip dinner too if he let her be, so he already carried a plate with a healthy meal that he cooked tonight.
As he expected, Eve didn’t lock the door—or to be more specific, she probably forgot to lock it.
He simply opened the door and saw Eve was so focused on her work that she didn’t even notice the door was already wide open.
Alex cleared his throat just to announce his presence, but Eve still didn’t hear him.
Thus, he walked to the work desk and closed the laptop lid with a quick snap.
Eve was surprised. She lifted her head and glared at Alex, "Didn’t I tell you that I’m busy?"
"And let you suffer from acid reflux again?" Alex put the plate on the table. "Don’t you remember that you had to be hospitalized once because your acid reflux was so bad?"
"That was three years ago," Eve retorted. "I’ve changed."
"Just like your alcohol tolerance?" Alex snickered. "Just eat your dinner. Eve. It won’t take too much of your time."
Eve knew that he was right. She still had acid reflux episodes, especially when she skipped meals. At the same time, her willpower to finish a project was far stronger, so she ignored the pain until she was done with her work at least.
However, since he already shut her laptop lid, she decided to eat dinner anyway.
"Thank you for the food, by the way," Eve said as she munched on the french fries slowly. "I’ll cook for tomorrow’s dinner. It’s not fair that you keep cooking for both of us."
Alex smiled as he heard that because she said it so lightly as if it was a normal occurrence between them.
When they were still dating, Alex was a terrible cook, so he always did the dishes for them to compensate for his lack of cooking contribution.
’Wouldn’t it be nice if we could resume this quiet life? You and I, in that small rented apartment,’ Alex told himself, but all he said to Eve was, "I’ve arranged everything. Pierre will come, and I will come with a ’mysterious woman’. It has become the talk in my family group chat."
"Why’d you refer to me as a mysterious woman anyway? Just say that I’m your girl or something," Eve said bluntly. "We’re posing as a couple, right?"
"I want to build their—especially Pierre’s expectation. He already knows about our past relationship, but I’m sure he doesn’t know about our current situation," Alex replied. "Besides, you are a mysterious woman for them, since you’re not from our circle."
"But what if I don’t fulfill their expectations? Maybe I’m not pretty enough, or smart enough," Eve asked out of worry.
"Oh-ho, trust me, Eve. You are far smarter than most. Many of my cousins and other family members are just lucky to be born rich," Alex lightly assured. "And you are beautiful enough to take my breath away, and that comes from a man who has seen beauties since he was a kid."
"Y-you dirty liar! Stop saying cheesy stuff!" Eve said before quickly stuffing her face with food to hide her embarrassment.
Alex chuckled.
"I’ll leave you for now. I can see you’re still busy with your work," Alex said. He walked to the door, but Eve stopped him.
"Wait—!"
"Hm?" Alex turned his head, waiting for Eve to ask whatever question she had.
"A-about our business deal. When will you..." Eve lowered her head to avoid his piercing gaze. She couldn’t bear to continue her sentence under his intense gaze. She didn’t want to be seen like she was eager, even though she just wanted to make sure that they were still in a work situation, not co-living for fun.
Of course, Alex understood what she meant. He let out a small laugh and turned around.
He was wearing a buttoned shirt. So he started unbuttoning his shirt from the collar down while asking, "Do you want it now? I wouldn’t mind."
"W-w-w-wait! Stop taking off your shirt!" Eve was flustered. She had seen his naked body for five years straight, but when facing this same situation again, she felt an inexplicable nervousness. "Can we do it after the meeting with your family?"
"Hm? And why should we wait? You’ve been seducing me when you were drunk. I think I deserve some compensation," Alex asked.
"B-because I want to see if I can actually go through with our plan. Carrying the next heir of your billion-dollar family estate is not an easy task..." Eve paused for a moment and added. "Even if I won’t be present in the child’s life."
Alex’s grin vanished instantly.
"It’s just a regular family function, Eve. It’s nothing serious," Alex said, his tone sounding less pleasant and frivolous now.
"It is serious for me, and I will give you the final answer after that family function," Eve stated her final verdict.
"Tsk. Fine. I’ll get the answer that I want in three days anyway," Alex said as he turned around and left the room.
