Chapter 84: You’re Avoiding Me. Why?

Jules’ pov

"You’ve really been avoiding me, Jules."

My mouth opened and closed. I felt like a fish left out of water. Kai had an unreadable expression over his face as he stared down at me.

I puffed out a long breath and shoved my hands into my pockets as I finally responded.

"I- I’m not." I responded and he scoffed, not bothering to pretend like he believed me. He was dressed in a hoodie and as usual, the cape casted a shadow over the top of his face.

He gave me a long look, like he was trying to read me like a book.

"You don’t need to lie to me, Jules. I can tell you’re avoiding me. My question is... why?" He continued after a few seconds and I sighed while silently cursing my luck for making me run into him right now.

"I’m not avoiding you, Kai." I breathed out in response. This time, he arched a brow as he looked me up and down once again.

"Is it because of the kiss we almost shared? Is that why you’re avoiding me?" He blurted out and I choked on air.

"I’m fine." I hurriedly called out while pulling away when he attempted to pat my back and he gave me a weird, long look before retrieving his hand and shoving it into his pocket.

The almost kiss was an incident which I’ve refused to think about since the day it almost happened. Him bringing it up right now wasn’t something I saw coming. If anything, I assumed he’d also pretend that never happened,

"Uh..." I mumbled but he cut me off.

"Or is it because of Blaze? Did he ask you to avoid me?" An amused expression settled over his face this time and I shrugged, keeping my face completely blank.

"I’m not avoiding you, Kai. I’ve just been busy." I muttered in response because there was no way I’d admit to him that he was right about Blaze asking me to stay away from him.

Kai only hummed for a few moments.

"Heard you got tangled in a mess last night from your friends. You alright?" He asked, reminding me of Taylor and Josh telling me they told Kai about it last night.

Right now, I wished they hadn’t.

"I am, thank you." I responded almost immediately and he hummed once again.

"I assume Blaze was the one who saved you... and the one who killed the principal, right?" He continued and I squinted at him, unsure of where he was getting at right now.

Before I could respond, he continued. "I’ve been wondering what Blaze’s deal is with you this entire time. But now I think I have a clear idea."

My heartbeat accelerated almost immediately.

"Does Taylor and Josh know you’re related to Blaze?" I asked and he shook his head.

"They don’t. No one does in this school, so... you can’t tell anyone." He responded and I slowly nodded.

"After your friends came to me last night, I ordered my guards to search for you and they told me you were safe after a while, so I knew Blaze must have gotten you out of that situation. I’m glad you’re safe... but to be honest, it won’t last, so be careful." He warned while grimacing.

"How did your guards know where to look? And d- do you know anything about what’s happening and why it involves me—" I started and he nodded, and then he grinned.

"I believe I do, but I’m not revealing that to you this way, it’s not something I can easily unpack in an elevator. You’d have to stop avoiding me and hang out with me again for that to happen." He informed me and I frowned.

"Are you blackmailing me?" I blurted out and he rolled his eyes while chuckling.

"Oh, Jules... if I’m actually blackmailing you, you wouldn’t even be able to ask, you’d be too frightened to." He responded, a serious look on his face before a smile settled over his face once again.

I shuddered a little but before I could get a word out, the doors slid open and he stepped out on his floor. He arched a brow at me and held a hand out to me.

"How about we hang out? I promise I won’t try to kiss you this time." He offered, a glint in his eyes as he stared down at me.

I bit on my bottom lip and slowly shook my head. I didn’t want to disobey Blaze... nor do I actually want to hang out with Kai right now. The only person I wanted to be with right now, was Blaze.

"Maybe some other time?" I mumbled. "I’m sorry." I added, feeling like I needed to apologize.

He let out a huff before nodding and retrieving his foot.

"Bye." I called out, and then I heaved out a long sigh once the doors slid close. I leaned against the cold wall and exhaled deeply, and then I let my eyes fall close.

"You’re fine, Jules." I muttered to myself a few times before stepping out of the elevator once it got to the highest floor. As I walked down the hall, I fished out the phone and checked the time.

6:00pm.

That’s still early, right?"

I thought to myself as I knocked on the door, breath bated as I waited.

The door got pulled open seconds later and my breath stuttered as carefully I stepped through the door, pushing it close behind me.

The scent of sandalwood and pine filled up my lungs in waves as I glanced up, eyes locking with Blaze’s in the next moment. He leaned forward, arm leaned a few spots above my head.

I bit on my bottom lip, excitement mixed with happiness bursting through my insides as I blinked at him. I couldn’t believe I once used to dread coming up to him. Now, I literally look forward to coming up to him and being in his presence.

"I’m not late, right?" I mumbled quietly and he snorted before leaning down and ghosting his lips over mine, so featherlight that it made me shiver.

Moments later, his hands wrapped around my thighs and he hoisted me up before I could blink. A squeak escaped my lips as I wrapped my arms around his shoulders, legs wrapping around his hips, rendering me flustered immediately.

He has carried me a bunch of times, but never like this.

My cheeks heated up as we stared at each other this way. There was barely any gap between us, our noses were almost touching and I could feel his hot breath against my lips.

"What do you think?" He drawled and then he closed the distance between us and bit on my bottom lip. I gasped quietly, shivering a little when a light tremor slithered through my insides.

"Know what I wanna do to you right now?" He asked as he began to walk towards the bedroom. I shook my head, clutching his shoulders tightly while heat gathered in my insides.

"So many bad, bad things, bunny."
