Chapter 72: Hanging Out + Kai

Jules’ pov

Taylor clearly doesn’t know how to read the room, because it had been obvious that Josh and I didn’t want Kai to come over, and I could do nothing but huff underneath my breath as I heard the sounds of Kai’s footsteps as he came closer.

He stopped beside Josh and stared down at us. I exhaled slowly before glancing up at him, teeth working over my bottom lip. His hair fell over his forehead and the cape of the hoodie casted a shadow over his face. He retrieved his hands from his pockets and waved down at us.

"Hey guys."

His eyes mostly remained on me as he spoke and I swallowed emptily as I waved at him along with the rest of the group.

"Hey, Kai." I offered him a smile as he sat beside Josh, directly in front of me. As I listened to Taylor asking him how he was and how his day went, my mind drifted back to the warning Blaze gave me the last time Kai came up in our conversation, which was the time I returned home late, and the time he rescued me from those vampires and had detected Kai’s scent on me.

He had asked me to stay away from him.

Although at first I ended up agreeing within myself that I wouldn’t let Blaze tell me what to do when it comes to that, I could still vividly remember the time I went into Kai’s room days ago and how he tried to kiss me. Thinking about it right now made my cheeks grow a little warm, that was enough to make me stay away from Kai, because I wouldn’t know how to act around him once we’re alone.

The sound of my name being called pulled me out of my thoughts.

"Jules, Kai was asking you how you’ve been." Taylor said to me, eyes gleaming almost suspiciously and I glanced towards Kai to catch him watching me with an unreadable expression. A small smile tug at his lips and then he reached forward and slowly wrapped his fingers around mine.

My heart flew into my throat and my cheeks tinged in embarrassment, causing me to tug my hand away and shove it underneath my shirt, heart racing. I could feel Taylor and Josh staring at me, and i could feel Kai’s gaze boring into me as well.

When I risked glancing up at him, the expression on his face was the same, but this time, the side of his lips twitched.

"How have you been, Jules?" He asked and I let out a long sigh before clearing my throat.

"I’ve been okay. Been good. What about you?" I responded, relatively proud of how steady my voice sounded. Kai let out a soft chuckle as he responded.

"You know, the usual. Been hanging out with the boys."

I slowly nodded my head. "Must be so much fun as usual." I mumbled and he leaned forward a little, eyes trailing over my body a little before resting on my face once again.

"Oh, believe me it is. The team I’m in, it’s never not fun whenever we gather to practice. It’s the swimming team. Why don’t you join as well?" He suggested and I hastily began to shake my head.

Taylor snorted, beating me to it. "Swimming team? That’s definitely a sport which caused him trauma. Have you forgotten that he almost drowned in the pool back in school on his first day? Weren’t you the one who rescued him?" He asked and Kai nodded almost immediately, chuckling.

"Oh, yeah. You’re right. I kind of forgot about that." He admitted and Taylor snickered.

Kai focused on me this time. "But that’s no biggie cause this time, there’d be no assholes to mess with you like that since I’m the captain of the team. With me present, I’d protect you and be there to save you if anything goes wrong. That’s a way to get past the trauma of almost drowning." Kai continued, sounding sincere as usual, eyes soft and scent calming and familiar.

Everything he said made sense and I genuinely appreciated his offer, I flat flattered even, but I definitely won’t be accepting it. Thinking about Blaze’s reaction to that was enough to make me shudder. And besides, I’ve already been given a pass to skip this entire thing.

I cleared my throat and leaned forward a little. "Thank you for offering, Kai. But I think I’d have to give it a pass."

Kai blinked once. "Why not? Is it because you’re already registered in a different team? If that’s the case, I can easily sort that out for you." He suggested and I shook my head in response.

"It’s not that." I paused for a moment. "The thing is... it’s already been taken care of for me. I don’t have to partake in the competition." I admitted and the surprise was stark on his face.

"Really?" He asked and Taylor butted in at once.

"Yup. Blaze took care of it for him. Wondering if he could take care of mine for me as well." He snickered and I watched as realization dawned on Kai.

"Oh." He exclaimed softly and I stared down at my folded legs, suddenly at a loss of word for what to say. When I glanced up, Taylor was looking between Kai and I.

After a few more seconds, he began to pack his things.

"You know what? I think Josh and I need to go get some more juice." He announced and Josh who had been on his phone the entire time, glanced up at Taylor in confusion.

"We are?" He asked and Taylor rolled his eyes before nodding.

"Yup. We are."

What Taylor was about to do was very clear. He wanted to leave Kai and I alone so we could talk privately.

But, I don’t want that. Not only because I wouldn’t know what to say to him and how I’m supposed to act around him once alone, but also because Blaze had also asked me to stay away from him. And well, a huge part of me now always wants to listen to anything he says.

Thinking of Blaze right now made me shift a little while heat flooded my stomach. Before Taylor could rise up, I grabbed his arm and tugged him back to his previous spot.

"Don’t go, we have enough juice here." I mumbled, pointedly avoiding Kai’s gaze, and Josh agreed with me at once. "We really do, Taylor. We don’t need to go get more."

Taylor’s mouth opened and closed a few times before he nodded his head and balanced himself properly. "I guess you guys are right." He mumbled awkwardly and I forced out a chuckle, while I felt Kai’s gaze burning a hole into the side of my face.

After a little while, Kai rose to his feet and claimed his friends were waiting for him. As we waved him goodbye, our gazes locked and I offered him a small smile.

"Bye, Kai." I mumbled and he nodded once before tugging the cape of his hoodie over his eyes and walking down the track, disappearing from our sight in no time.

I turned towards Taylor once we were alone once again, lips pursed.

"Why did you invite him over?" I demanded while Josh sighed loudly and threw his hands out.
