Chapter 202: Bracing Up

Jules’ pov

My father apparently searched for the will in order to destroy it, but my grandfather had it stored in the hands of an invincible confidante. The day I left the palace for the first time, the confidante approached me and handed the will over to me. It contained a lot of riches and resources all under my name. My grandfather left me a note and a little recording clip." He paused for a moment and I remained silent, not wanting to interrupt.

"He didn’t say much in it, because I was technically a stranger to him. He didn’t know what I looked like because my father kept me hidden from everyone. In the clip, he introduced himself and told me he didn’t think I was a monster. Then he urged me to burn through his riches because I’d never be able to finish it. And that was it."

My mouth was hanging open by the time he finished explaining everything to me. Never in my wildest dream did I imagine that Blaze’s riches didn’t come from his father. The more I hear about his father, the more I’m realizing that he’s really something else entirely.

"That’s... that’s really crazy. I can’t believe your father killed his own father. I can’t believe your grandfather did that too. All of this is still blowing my mind." I revealed and he chuckled at the expression on my face. He tugged me closer to him, his grip tightening around my middle.

"I was just as shocked to discover that I had a grandfather who actually wanted to see me that bad." He paused and nuzzled my shoulder for a moment.

"It’s great that we never got to see each other though. If he had met up with me, I’m certain he’d have believed something was wrong with me." He rolled his eyes as he spoke and I instantly shook my head, wrapping my arms around his shoulders as I spoke.

"Don’t say that, Blaze. He sounds amazing, I think he’d have loved you." I insisted and Blaze snickered, looking genuinely amused.

"Did you think my grandfather is a saint?" He drawled before continuing when I remained silent.

"My grandfather was a criminal, he’s as bad as every other corrupted politician out there. He was the one who raised my father after all. I think they fell out because my father became too ambitious and too greedy." He explained and I bit my bottom lip, completely unsure of what to say next this time.

"Oh." I mumbled.

Blaze’s family was really something else. The more I learn about them, the more I get shocked to the core.

"Anyways, enough about that." Blaze suddenly announced, tugging me out of my thoughts.

"We have a lot of things to work on, because now, a lot of things have changed." He continued and I shifted a little in his laps, breathing in his scent and relaxing into him even more.

"After that encounter with my father, he’s definitely gonna come at us with a full force. I don’t think he’s gonna hold himself back any longer." As he spoke, my heartbeat began to accelerate.

"Firstly, we need to figure out why my father wants to get his hands on you, and we need to figure out what Andrian’s deal is. We need to also figure out if my father has a hand in your family’s murder. We need to figure out a lot of things and find connections between them." He continued, face serious as he spoke and I swallowed emptily.

"But we’d be safe in school, right? That’s why I’m a little relieved that we’re going back. At least in there, it’s gonna be void of the bad guys and all." I spoke and Blaze blinked once before chuckling a little.

"Oh, bunny... what made you think Carnivals of all places is gonna be safe?" He asked with another shake of his head and my heart hammered against my ribs.

"I- I just thought..."

"Once we return back there, we’d have to be careful and very conscious because for one, there’d be eyes and ears everywhere. It’s safer outside the school than inside the school." He explained and I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I had been holding.

"How? I thought no one aside from the students could be allowed into the school..." I started and Blaze snorted.

"That’s just what everyone is told. But with the right connections, anyone can have access into the school." He paused for a moment.

"Take for example, the prey fraternity... the ridiculous ritual they force students to perform, there’s a secret camera in there, and there are a set of grown adults who have access to that camera, watching the students being forced to touch themselves in the name of initiating themselves into the useless fraternity."

As he spoke, my eyes widened, and my mouth dropped open just as a memory rushed through my mind, an image of me being ridden with so much fear after Kim had told me I had to touch myself sexually, in front of everyone, as a way for me to be initiated into the fraternity. I could remember being scared shitless and also being creeped out by the thought of doing that.

"So... There’s a camera in there that captures that initiation and some sick people somewhere will be watching everything happen? That’s really... disturbing." I whispered, eyes still blown wide from shock.

"So, what if they’re underaged? Those people would still watch them touch themselves?" I asked and after Blaze nodded, I had to force myself from retching from disgust.

"I could remember being so scared that day. Kim had said everyone had to do it and that it was nonnegotiable when I tried to get out of doing it. Just thinking about the fact that a bunch of creepy adults might have watched me touch myself that night if I hadn’t suddenly been asked to not bother to do it any longer, is making me feel sick right now." I whispered, and then I perked up next.

"Wait... I just remembered, you came by that night, right? I could remember almost doing it, but then I got a whiff of your scent, everyone did actually, because everyone instantly grew scared... then after some minutes, Kim arrived and told me I was free to go and that I didn’t need to do the ritual any longer." I had been meaning to ask him this exact question but I never thought about it whenever he was with me.

He snorted a little before chuckling. "You were scared when you got a whiff of my scent that night?" His voice had a teasing drawl but my cheeks still colored slightly.

"Only a little." I mumbled and he snorted before tightening his hold around my waist, and then he nuzzled my throat, making me shiver slightly.

"Yeah, that was me. I was already possessive back then, and the thought of those old freaks watching you do something like that, the thought of anyone rather– drove me insane, so I came by that night and ordered Kim to put an end to it."
