Chapter 160: Why?

Jules pov

"What?" I whispered because nothing else was coming to mind right now, seeing as my entire brain completely shut down after he said those words.

A small grin tugged at the side of his lips and he leaned against the wall which we were standing by, arms slowly getting folded.

"It’s because I like you, Jules." He responded again, eyes raking over my entire body this time, filling me up with the sudden urge to hide away from him.

"Why?" I blurted out and his eyebrows arched as his head cocked sidesway.

"Why what?" He echoed and I let out a long sigh as I reached up and pressed my fingers against my closed eyes.

I didn’t even understand why I asked that question.

"If you’re referring to why I like you, the answer is because you’re you." He responded and I met out another sigh as he continued.

"For one, I like you because you’re so pretty, like so breathtaking. I like you because of your personality, it’s so cute. I also like you because well, I feel drawn to you, this bit is hard to explain. I like you because of a lot of things and one thing I’m certain of is that i definitely want to get to know you better." Once he was done speaking, he arched a brow at me again, clearly indicating for me to start speaking.

I let my eyes wander around for a moment before finally responding.

"I don’t understand what this means, Kai."

He blinked once, the smile slowly disappearing from his face.

"You don’t understand what?" He moved off from the wall this time. "What’s so hard to understand about the fact that I like you?"

"Look, Kai... I- I feel flattered that you like me, I genuinely do." I paused for a moment and his forehead creased a little.

"But... I’m sorry, I don’t like you like that." I breathed out, watching as a frown slowly settled across his face.

"You don’t like me?" He echoed out and I bit on my bottom lip as I slowly nodded. "I’m so sorry."

"But that’s impossible." He blurted out and I blinked at him in confusion.

"What?"

"It’s impossible for you to not like me, for anyone to not like me, actually." He explained, hands moving around a little as if exasperated and I huff out a sound of disbelief.

"I’m sorry, Kai." I mumbled again and he scoffed.

"But you do like me, you can admit that you do, then we can go on from there." He urged and I suddenly got filled with the urge to laugh, but I didn’t give into that urge.

"Kai... I really have to go." I breathed out after a few minutes of him waiting for me to somehow confess that I liked him as well.

"Was that what Blaze asked you to say to me?" I demanded and I reared back a little, totally not expecting him to bring Blaze up.

"Huh?"

"About me liking you. Did Blaze ask you to lie to me that you don’t like me? To turn me down?" He continued and I let out a small laugh as I glanced around again.

"Kai... what are you saying?"

"Just answer the question."

"I really don’t like you like that, Kai. I’m sorry. Blaze didn’t ask me to say that to you."

In reality, Blaze asked me to not say another word to him.

"But you liked me one time, that was so obvious, when we just started becoming friends." He announced and I shrugged a little while nodding.

"You might be right. But that definitely died away a long time ago. I don’t like you like that, I only saw you as a friend, I’m sorry."

"Stop apologizing already." He breathed out after a few seconds and I almost apologized for that but caught myself at the last moment.

"Well, if you say you don’t, then that’s alright."

I blinked in confusion.

"It is?" I mumbled and he hummed while nodding his head.

"It is." Once he was done speaking, he took a step closer to me.

"Just know that not being with me is a loss on your part because I can help you out so much. I can protect you and keep you safe, and do so much more to you."

I let out a small sigh and took a step backwards.

"I appreciate the offer, Kai."

"Of course. I’ll be here waiting for you whenever you change your mind, like I know you will." He continued almost immediately.

"I have to go." I called out instead and then I began to turn around.

"Just don’t come to me when it’s too late though, when I won’t be able to help you." He continued and I stopped in my tracks and turned back around.

"You know stuff about me, that’s more than obvious at this point." I pointed out and he grinned while shrugging.

"That’s correct." He affirmed and I felt my heart skip a beat.

"How is that possible? How are you getting your information?" I pressed and he shrugged again.

"That’s a secret. If you get together with me... if you agree to become mine, for me to claim you and all, then I’d undoubtedly let you in on everything I know, and I’ll go to any length to protect you." As he spoke, he slowly closed the distance between us until we were standing very close.

I stepped away from him once again and this time, he reached out and grabbed my arm.

"Why do you keep doing that? I’m not gonna hurt you or anything." His voice held a thin layer of hurt in it and I cringed internally.

"You might not realize this but you’re manipulating me. You want me to get together with you, not because I want to, but because I want to be protected. That sounds like blackmailing."

This time, he dropped my arm and I was able to step away from him.

"That’s not blackmailing or manipulation, Jules. It’s just called using what you have to get what you want. Any smart person would never miss that kind of opportunity."
