Chapter 151: Distraught
Jules pov
My heart was still racing fast as I frantically glanced around, wondering if Kim was bluffing or not. The expression across his face showed that he wasn’t bluffing, but it was just so hard to believe that he’d actually dare betray Blaze like this...
"Jules." I heard Kim’s voice calling out right before I felt a hand grip my arm, giving me a little shake and pulling me out of my thoughts. When I glanced back at Kim, he was rolling his eyes a little.
"You’re so dramatic, you practically zoned out on me." He chided and I blinked in confusion again as he continued.
"I was only pulling your legs." He continued and I felt a scowl slowly form on my face as I pulled my arm out of his grip.
"Are you insane?" I demanded while trying to regulate my breathing pattern. My heart was still thumping against my ribs and I was finding it hard to concentrate on anything except the fear that I was currently in a trap.
When I let my eyes wander around again, Kim let out a disgruntled sound. "I said I was just joking, I swear it."
I let out a long breath as fully took him in.
"You know what I find funny now?" I demanded and he shook his head.
"It’s that you’ve betrayed my trust once. I didn’t fully trust you this second time but I still went ahead with it because it wasn’t like I had any other choices to select from. Then you had to pull this ridiculous joke out of thin air?" I scoffed and shook my head as soon as I was done speaking.
Two young women walked past us and I clamped my mouth shut until they were long gone, and then I continued.
"I sincerely doubt what you previously said was a joke, and I’m definitely gonna tell Blaze about it." I continued flatly as my heartbeat finally slowed down.
Kim let out a huff as he stepped closer to me. "But I was really joking. I swear it."
I took another step away from him again. "Please stay back. I think it’s Blaze who you need to explain this supposed joke to." As I spoke, I began to contemplate if I should keep going ahead or if I should just pull away right here, right now.
I remained frozen for a few minutes before turning around, in the direction of the back door where Blaze was waiting for me in a truck.
"You can’t pull out now." Kim spoke before I could take one more step. When I glanced at him, he bared his teeth in what’s supposed to look like a laugh as he spoke.
"The CCTV is capturing everything we’re doing right now. You can’t pull out. We need to stick to this plan no matter what." He explained and I almost peeked at the camera but he reminded me at the last moment that I wasn’t supposed to do that.
"I still feel creeped out doing this with you." I mumbled reluctantly and he shrugged a little.
"Well, I feel conflicted too, knowing I might lose my life tonight." Kim responded and I let out an exasperated sigh.
"Kim, these are two different things." I snapped, watching as he bristled.
"You don’t know what you’re saying." He accused and I rolled my eyes before pointing at him.
"You’re in this situation because of the decision you made, because of your greed and all. While I’m feeling ceeeped out to continue because you revealed your true colors back then and told me you were gonna hand me over to the higher ups."
Once I was done speaking, Kim let out another huff.
"I was really joking, I promise." He urged but I refused to believe him or take his words for it again.
Because I was now feeling extremely skeptical, I decided to put a call through to Blaze before doing anything next.
"Remember the plan? No calls." Kim instantly reminded me but I ignored him, silently willing Blaze to come to the phone.
"See? We said no calls." Kim reminded me after Blaze didn’t accept the call and I pursed my lips.
"If I don’t talk to Blaze, I’m not taking a step forward with you." I informed him as I redialed his number.
Blaze picked up on the second ring and I felt a rush of emotions in my chest.
"Bunny? Did something happen? You alright?" He asked a couple of questions at once and I felt butterflies start to flap around in my stomach.
I glanced at Kim who was staring straight ahead, and then I spoke.
"Well, you see... nothing actually happened, but well, Kim acted weird at one point..."
I trailed off just as Blaze spoke, voice low and chilling. "What did he do?"
"Oh, he didn’t- he said fuck you, fuck me and that he was gonna end up handing me over to the higher ups like he agreed to do to them." Once I was done speaking, a bleak expression was on Kim’s face.
"Can you please give him the phone? Let me have a little word with him." Blaze asked and I held the phone out to Kim who stared at it like it was contaminated.
He tentatively accepted the phone and held it against his ear. I couldn’t hear anything Blaze said, but I couldn’t see the moment Kim’s hand began to tremble a little. Kim didn’t say anything until he handed the phone to me.
When I pressed it against my ear again, Blaze was assuring me that everything was gonna be alright and that nothing was gonna happen.
Once the call ended, I pocketed the phone and turned towards Kim.
"Let’s keep going then."
He still remained frozen as he responded. "You’ve ruined my life." It wasn’t a question, it was a statement, an accusation.
I shrugged a little, biting at the inside of my cheek. "Maybe you shouldn’t have cracked that kind of joke in the first place then."
