Chapter 81: +Chapter 81+

This made the young mom laugh, "I don’t mind it, Betty seems thrilled."

Betty was more than thrilled. She was trying to climb up Asher’s leg while Caspian was panicking because he honestly didn’t know how well the Mafia King did with children.

"Betty come over here, we’ve bothered the nice couple enough," Her mom tried to cajole her but the toddler wasn’t having in.

She sat on Asher’s legs like a CEO behind a desk, heaving from the effort it took her to get up there.

Asher just let her do whatever she wanted, uncaring that she was reaching for the steak on his plate.

"You can’t eat that," Her mom swooped forward to pick her up, an apologetic smile on her face.

"I’ll take her with me now, thank you so much," She said genuinely, looking slightly less tired.

Caspian glanced down at his tray as they left, "Where did my fries go?"

Asher kept a perfectly straight face, "I’ll get you more."

"What?" He muttered in disbelief, looking at Betty who was staring at them over her mom’s shoulders.

The little girl held the entire packet of fries in her small hands, her smile blinding as she was taken away.

Caspian couldn’t help but laugh at that, "I don’t think she should have that many fries."

"That’s hardly too much," Asher defended.

"I didn’t think you were good with kids," Caspian commented, missing little Betty now that she was gone.

"I’m not," Asher replied bluntly.

Actually, he would have to agree. If Betty’s mom hadn’t stepped in, he knew that Asher would have let her gnaw on the big piece of steak.

The image was so funny that he laughed some more, inevitably choking on a bit of food.

"Does it bother you that much?" Asher asked quietly after providing him with water.

"No," Caspian said lightly, still clearing his throat. "I’d be more concerned if you were."

Asher fell quiet at that, a thoughtful expression on his face.

Caspian hardly noticed, there was simply too much going on in the restaurant.

"Do you want to go on a walk?" He suggested when they paid for their food and left the restaurant.

"We’re both wearing jackets," He tagged on, a teasing smile on his face.

Asher looked tired of the matter, and it tickled Caspian, his laughter ringing in the cool night.

He couldn’t remember the last time he had laughed this much, and he couldn’t honestly say why he was so happy.

Things weren’t exactly at their best.

Caspian rested his head on Asher’s shoulder as they ambled down the sidewalk. "I haven’t walked around Moonstone in years, the last time I did was the day before I ran off."

He laughed to himself at that point while Asher quietly listened, paying complete attention.

"Did you know I got pickpocketed the moment I got to Haines? It’s a rough city."

"Do you remember who did it?" Asher asked, pulling him closer so that he didn’t bump into a passerby.

"Said his name was Max, but it could have been a lie." Caspian looked up at Asher, "I couldn’t imagine that he made any profit," He shook his head.

"All I had was my old and cracked phone and a couple hundred dollars, not exactly jackpot for the thief."

He turned to Asher after talking for so long. "Ever gotten pickpocketed before?"

Asher looked like he didn’t expect the question, and Caspian was about to take back his question, because who would try to rob a Mafia King?

"No..."

Not surprising-

"But I have tried my hand at pickpocketing before," Asher continued.

Caspian paused at the admission, right before laughing so hard that his limbs became flubber, Asher having to hold him up.

"I expected a different reaction," Asher quipped dryly.

"I’m sorry," Caspian gasped when he could speak again. "You just said it like it was a hobby, like skating or soccer."

"Well there was only so much you could do as a hobby while growing up in the Mafia," Asher doubled down but his tone was lighter now, amusement back in his hazel gold eyes.

"Yeah, I can imagine." Caspian said - when he infact, couldn’t.

"Jael and I would sneak out and hop cabs downtown..."

"Jael?" Caspian interrupted, his disbelief clearly written on his face.

"Yeah, he’s four years older than me but I’d insist on going along," Asher went on.

Caspian however couldn’t get past the fact that they had grown up together, it put a new perspective on them.

"...We got dared by a couple of kids, and Jael wanted us to ignore them and return to the mansion..."

"But you didn’t agree," Caspian completed.

"Actually I did," Asher corrected, his voice dripping with nostalgia.

"What?"

"I’m almost offended," Asher chuckled at his obvious disbelief. "They taunted us, playing cruel pranks, tripping me, and making me lose a tooth..."

Caspian’s mouth fell open, "How old were you?"

"Eight. Jael got pissed by that but we pickpocketed the wrong people and ended up in a cell."

Caspian was completely speechless at this point, the craziest story he had from that age was running around in the woods close to the Pack house.

They were back in the parking lot of the restaurant, getting in the car to return to the Pack house.

It was a wild ride from start to finish, and he was curious if Jael still remembered the incident - it had to be hard to forget, right?

Back at the Pack house, dinner was over so it meant that everyone was out and about again.

That meant more stares but fortunately, no one approached them... until they got into the foyer.

"I hoped to see you at dinner," Noah walked right up to him like he had been waiting for their return.

"We had to pass," Asher replied although Noah had directed the question at him.

He looked like he wanted to say more but was intimidated by Asher, nodded politely and hot footing it away,

Caspian frowned, the expression sticking stubbornly to his face. Noah being so nice was so unsettling, it made him feel like he was plotting something.
