Chapter 364: -Chapter 364-
A week passed peacefully with this new arrangement, and noticeably, by the next day, the clients were far more respectful than they used to be to Lake.
Lake never really cared about that, to begin with, he wasn’t a Mafia King. But this way, their business associates tended to cause less trouble and deals went smoother so it was still a win for him.
Things would have been perfect if he didn’t constantly bump into Bella Blackburn at every event and every business meeting he attended.
He knew that the heiress was trying to catch Davian alone so she could pull heaven knew what scheme but that wouldn’t be happening.
If anything, it was more likely for her to see him alone at an event because Davian was merely accompanying him.
Lake placed a hand on Davian’s face to catch the Alpha’s attention, Davian instantly leaning towards him like a flower to light...
They were at a hotel opening, events like these were frequent, and after Lake took over, the head of the Black Mafia House attended more of them.
It was important to build a presence, and Lake knew this. Compared to Davian, he was like a social prodigy, and with Davian by his side as a deterrent to intrusive questions, he didn’t mind these events.
Although, he did find himself getting more touchy with Davian but these were actions he did without any go-ahead from his brain because he knew Bella was watching.
He knew that people were certain that he was properly mated to Davian and carrying the Mafia King’s child. Davian didn’t seem like he was aware of these rumors, the Alpha didn’t treat him any differently.
"Let’s leave early so we can cook dinner," Lake murmured, his hand still on Davian’s face although he didn’t need to do that to speak to him.
Lake had settled into his role as the Head of the Black Mafia House. He favored expensive and flowy silk dress shirts.
It was comfortable and formal, he had them in all dark shades and a few light, like the soft silver dress shirt he currently had on.
Davian’s previously gloomy expression brightened, the Alpha didn’t fancy large crowds, and it didn’t help that people were constantly approaching them for a conversation.
"Yeah, let’s." He agreed without a moment of hesitation.
Lake turned to where Bella was seated, the heiress was nursing a drink and blatantly watching them, despite the opening event being so lively.
He was really curious about what she intended to do. Would she keep going through the trouble of stalking them just to watch them?
He considered bringing it up to Davian but she was harmless, and he more or less knew her goal. He also didn’t want Davian talking to her for any reason.
If her mysteriously showing up wherever they went progressed into something else, he would then point it out to Davian and have him deal with it.
Besides after his first meeting with Bella, they got off on the wrong foot. She looked down on him so he was simply getting back at her by rubbing it in her face that he was at Davian’s side and she wasn’t.
It looked like Bella wanted to approach them as they made their move to leave but she seemed to think better of it, and by the time he got to the parking lot, he had forgotten all about the enigmatic heiress.
Lake had said they would be cooking dinner together but in truth, Davian was the only one doing the cooking.
Tonight, he didn’t need to work on his laptop so he just sat at the counter.
It was raining tonight but it didn’t change the bright and warm ambiance of the kitchen, the delicious scent of Davian’s cooking making Lake’s mouth water.
Another week went by just like that, the day of Caspian’s engagement party drawing nearer.
Lake had fewer and fewer nauseous episodes but his appetite only improved much to Davian’s approval.
He knew that he shouldn’t have so many doctor’s visits just in the first month alone but it felt like Doctor Perez stole every chance he could to come and check up on him.
Mostly it was to chat and keep track of his symptoms while urging him to get enough nutrition and food, it was like having a nagging mother-in-law.
If the doctor had his way, he would move into the mansion to live with them. Lake had a feeling that the further along he got, that would happen regardless.
By the third week of the preparations, he could already go with Caspian to check the event center where the engagement party would be held.
The theme was silver and dark red, it made the hall look sophisticated, but cold and intimidating.
All around were workers still setting up pillars and frames for hanging up decorations. In less than a week, it would be all ready.
"We’re about to close up the guest list," Caspian was saying as they walked around.
This was the first time in weeks Lake was leaving the house alone but he had suggested going to see the venue alone and Davian couldn’t turn him down.
"Is there anyone you want to invite?" His friend generously offered.
Lake was amused, "You say that like you’re not my only friend-"
"Sorry," Quinn interrupted them at that point, the pregnant Omega looked harried but he was clearly excited, a healthy flush to his cheeks. "What do you think of this set of chandeliers? I was thinking of having them hang low over the dance floor so when the lights dim it’ll look magical..."
The Omega spoke a lot when he was excited despite being out of breath, holding a digital pad that had the pictures.
Caspian’s eyes sparkled at the image, "That sounds wonderful, I’ll leave it up to you."
Quinn barely let him complete his sentence before he was hurrying off to throw around more orders.
Caspian gave his attention back to Lake, with a smug smile on his pretty face at Lake saying he was his only friend. "What about Bella Blackburn?"
