Chapter 295: -Chapter 295-

Arthur’s brows furrowed, his eyes fixed on the carpet beneath their feet.

It didn’t matter how many times he made the offer, Sophia would never choose him.

But surprisingly, it didn’t hurt anymore, he was just numb.

He had stayed at the mansion all these years, climbing up the ranks till he became the butler, all for a chance to see Sophia again.

Instead, all he had for company was her wretched bastard child, who mocked him with his uncanny resemblance to the only woman he ever loved.

There was nothing left for him at the mansion, if he stayed here, he would lose Sophia again, and it would only be a matter of time until Lake paid back all he had done to him.

"Why don’t you come stay at my place for a few days?" He offered to Sophia, walking over to help her with her bags.

Sophia’s soft brown eyes were curious as she stared up at him. "You’ve got a house, Art?"

Arthur went quiet for a few seconds coming up with the perfect comeback, only to give up and just give a straight answer.

"I do. You can stay there until you figure out what you want to do next," He offered generously.

Sophia blew out a cloud of smoke to obscure her features, her eyes stung and it wasn’t because of the cigarette smoke.

"You’ve always been so nice to me, Arthur," She said softly in a way that was uncharacteristic of her.

Arthur left the room first, handling all of her luggage. "So is that a yes?

Sophia hurried to his side and took his arm, "Well, I would hate to pay for a hotel." She leaned closer to him, going back to being coy.

Arthur already knew what her answer would be, for someone who certainly had a lot of money, she was abhorrent to spending any of it.

But that was fine, Arthur was willing to spend all he had on her, and over the decades, he had racked up quite a bit of money.

Lake tried to close his eyes to relax but it was a terrible idea, vivid images of Sophia branded on the insides of his eyelids.

His eyes flew open but it still didn’t spare him from the aftermath of the confrontation.

He had been birthed by two people starved for money, only for him to live his entire life scrounging to get by.

Lake didn’t care much for Sophia but their confrontation was so fresh in his mind, that he couldn’t help how he felt.

Davian giving him his number made sense now because he was so very close to calling him.

In the Alpha’s company, he was bound to be too self-conscious to feel the gaping gash in his chest.

Sitting in this room didn’t help at all, the serenity of the soft gold only made him feel chaotic thoughts much more.

Lake got off the bed then, he just wanted to take a walk down the hallway...

Well, it was more like he was hoping to bump into Davian, and if the Alpha asked what he was doing, he would say he was just on a short walk.

He had expected Davian to return by then but it was really no surprise he would take this long.

He was still a Mafia King, and that meant that he wouldn’t always be in the mansion like they were right now.

Davian would soon have to return to his duties, and now that his rut was over, it would happen sooner rather than later.

Davian got comfortable behind his desk, tapping his fingers on the flat surface in impatience.

"Well," He prompted impatiently when Matilda took her time getting comfortable.

"I only learned of this recently but I couldn’t sit still, and I just had to inform you."

Davian just peered humorlessly at Matilda, all those words and she still hadn’t said what he wanted to hear.

"And you said this has to do with Lake?"

"Yes," Matilda said calmly, although underneath her calm exterior, she was trembling.

This was more delicate than an open heart surgery, she needed to say the perfect words.

"I overheard some of the house staff talking about it, so it may be nothing more than a rumor..."

"And you still thought to tell me?" Davian cut her off calmly.

Matilda froze then, knowing that she was in a field of landmines.

"That’s how serious this rumor is," She quickly scrambled to save the situation.

"Rumors that Arthur, the mansion’s butler tried to drug Lake-"

The door opened then, to reveal one of the people being talked about.

Lake was more shocked to see Matilda than she was to see him, which was saying a lot.

He had ended up wandering further away than he thought. But that was because he expected to bump into Davian in no time, and when he didn’t he found himself at the Alpha’s study.

Now in hindsight, he probably shouldn’t have opened the door without so much as knocking, but he had caught the tail end of Matilda’s words and his body had moved without volition.

Lake stood at the doorway, still reeling from shock, because of all the people he expected to be telling this to Davian, Matilda wasn’t even on the list.

Considering she also had something to do with it, he didn’t understand what she hoped to gain by doing this.

Considering that she had gone through so much effort just to make sure that he didn’t tell Davian.

"I-I’m sorry about barging in," Lake immediately apologized, not forgetting his manners.

"I’ll just b-be..." He took a step back, getting ready to bolt.

"Come here," Davian stopped his plan in its tracks.

Lake could have probably gone ahead and dashed down the hallway, and not have Davian mad at him, but he really didn’t want to go back to being all alone in his room.

Not to mention, it was dangerous to let Matilda continue whatever it was she was trying to do.

He needed to be here in person to witness what kind of lies she planned to feed Davian.
