Chapter 293: -Chapter 293-

Sofia’s eyes went wide, a stricken expression on her face, her arms wrapped around herself because she suddenly felt cold.

She couldn’t do it. She couldn’t do it...

There wasn’t anything she couldn’t do for money before, it was why she currently had so much of it.

So much it would never run out, so much she could do anything...

"Why?" Lake outright demanded, his voice stronger now.

Sofia clicked her tongue, pissed. "Your old man was right," She muttered, putting distance between them to find another stick of cigarette.

"He lied to me, told me he had enough money to set me up for life." She reported, her voice sullen as she struggled with the lighter.

Click.

"It was why I got with the old bastard," She went on, avoiding Lake’s gaze.

Click. Click.

"His plan was to get me knocked up and leave me but two could play that game..." She sounded like a petulant child as she spoke.

Click. Click. Click.

"I just used his own tactics against him," Sofia shrugged, taking a deep drag of her lit cigarette, the tip a bright red.

"I couldn’t afford a kid and he wouldn’t let me get rid of ya," She kept complaining like it was a minor inconvenience.

Lake’s vision blurred over as he listened to Sophia, dissociating as she spoke about him like he was a nuisance.

He focused on the red tip of her cigarette to ground himself, disappointed but not surprised.

Sofia sighed and tousled her hair, "Ah shit, I shouldn’t have come here..."

"Yeah, Sofia, you shouldn’t have," Lake said steadily, his heart ripping slowly, bleeding down the insides of his mouth.

Sofia looked shocked to hear him say it so bluntly, a cloud of smoke obscuring her face.

Lake didn’t want to be there anymore. He turned around and walked back to Davian’s side, holding his arm this time because he could barely stay upright.

"See yourself out," He said with confidence he didn’t even know he had, "Right away." He added over his shoulder.

Sofia’s lips twisted, she had planned to stay here for at least a month, leaving now would require taking money out of her savings.

"I don’t have the money to," She said flippantly.

Here she was trying to be nice to this kid, and he immediately kicked her out.

Was that any way to treat his mom?

Davian pulled Lake into his arms before the Omega could turn around and reply to the stranger’s words.

"You won’t need money when you’re dead," He calmly let her know, satisfied when she immediately put out her cigarette and got busy packing.

Lake let Davian guide him out of the room, feeling like his entire body was made of glass.

He didn’t know how he had expected that to go but it left him raw all the same.

The realization that his mom was never going to come to save and take care of him, that he was and always had been all alone sank to the bottom of his stomach like toxic sludge.

He stopped when Davian stopped and looked up when the Alpha gently tipped up his jaw.

"Are you alright?" Davian asked with more emotion than he had seen on Sophia’s face while she was talking about him.

"I think so, I’m not throwing up yet," Lake tried to say in his usual dry manner but couldn’t.

Even the quality of his voice was like glass, and it felt like if he was handled even a little roughly, he would shatter to pieces.

"Let’s get you back to your room," Davian let him know before sweeping him off his feet.

Lake didn’t protest, completely depending on Davian at that moment. It was all too much for him to deal with all alone.

"Hungry?" Davian asked gently as his long legs swiftly ate up the hallway.

Lake wasn’t, the thought of food was enough to upset his stomach, he really just wanted to lay down.

"Not really," He sighed, his head propped against Davian’s shoulder.

"Is there anything you’d like to eat?" Davian doubled down, taking the turn that led to the master wing.

"Cake," Lake replied, going for the least worrying option.

He didn’t trust Davian not to buy out an entire restaurant again if he said he wanted to eat something else.

He would rather not be stuck eating leftovers all day again.

Davian paused for a moment before replying, "Alright..."

"Thank you," Lake said gratefully when Davian placed him on the bed, looking away when the Alpha stared at him a little too intently.

He could only breathe easier after Davian stepped back, the decor of his new bedroom suddenly very interesting.

"I’ll be gone for a bit," Davian informed him, "If you need me, call me."

Lake sat up straighter when Davian handed him his phone so he could save his number, not expecting that.

He doubted he would need Davian in the short time the Alpha would be away but it was nice to have his number all the same.

"Thanks," He mumbled this time, slowly lying down, and closing his eyes.

"You need to stop staying that," Davian’s low voice sounded really close to him, making his eyes fly open in shock.

The Alpha had already put some distance between them by then, heading to the door.

Davian hated to leave Lake all alone after what had just happened but he needed to put a couple of things in place.

Making the order for cakes was the easiest thing to do, he didn’t know Lake’s preferences so he ordered a variety.

This was a great chance to learn Lake’s favorite dessert, so he intended to take full advantage of it.

Lake seemed averse to having Arthur handle his meals for reasons he was still unaware of, but it didn’t matter, they could eat out for however long Lake wanted.

Davian made sure to also order some actual food, Lake had warned him to stop ordering a lot of food, so he unfortunately had to cut down his order, much to his disappointment.
