Chapter 291: -Chapter 291-

Lake should give Davian more credit from time to time because the Alpha reheated their leftovers perfectly, it wasn’t even cold in the middle.

When they got back to their new rooms, the exhaustion hit Lake hard, he just wanted to forget about the events of that evening and go right to bed.

Davian hesitated until the last moment before heading to his room.

"If you have difficulty sleeping, I’ll just be in the next room." He muttered, reluctantly trudging through the connecting door.

Lake watched him go with amusement, "Thank you, good night," He said good-naturedly.

He sighed when the door closed with a gentle click, taking a deep breath that made his shoulders slouch.

Their current arrangement was perfect, Lake didn’t even mind sleeping all alone in his bed, so he wouldn’t be taking Davian’s offer.

A lot had happened so fast, it was giving him whiplash.

Lake doubted he would be able to fall asleep tonight - and it had nothing to do with not sharing a bed with Davian.

First things first, he had to take a shower, maybe taking one would help clear up his head.

Lake hadn’t been in the bathroom yet, and it fit perfectly into the decor of the room.

It was simple and modern, done in white marble and gold. It didn’t feel too much although he knew without being told that it was an expensive bathroom.

There was a bathtub on a raised marble dais, the tub was white and outlined in solid gold, and it called to him.

He filled it up with warm water, using a bathbomb that smelled of sweet red grapes.

It was a pleasant change from the scent of bitter chocolate that stuck to him from spending the entire day with Davian.

Eventually, the Mafia King had to return to work, so he knew that their current arrangement was only temporary.

Getting attached any further to Davian would be to his detriment but with everything going on, he couldn’t bring himself to push Davian away.

Lake spent a good deal of time just soaking in the tub, his mind momentarily clear of troubles in the soothing warm water.

He returned to his bedroom is a bathrobe, slowing down at the telltale sound of a knock.

At first, Lake thought the knock came from his front door and panicked for a moment trying to figure out who it could be.

But it came again, and he realized that the knocking was actually coming from the connecting door between his and Davian’s rooms.

He just walked over to it, bare foot against the gold carpeting, to open the door.

"Need something?" He asked with a raised brow.

Lake asked a question, but he didn’t wait for an answer, his attention caught by the interior of Davian’s room.

"Why is it so dark in here?" He asked but the question held no judgment, just a curious fascination.

"Can I come in?" He asked politely, standing at the point between the doors where the soft gold carpet abruptly changed to black.

Davian cleared his throat self-consciously and stepped back, "Sure."

He didn’t realize how much he would hate having Lake out of his sight until it happened.

And although they had already said their goodnights, he found himself knocking.

"Practically everything is black in here," Lake said with an amused expression, padding from one edge of the room to another.

"It’s soothing in its own way," He decided, satisfied after inspecting the bedroom briefly.

"By the way, what did you need earlier?" Lake turned to Davian.

Davian had been enjoying Lake walking around his room but now he was put on the spot again.

Because he really didn’t need anything... "I forgot to say goodnight," He bullshitted.

Lake wore a look of disbelief, a short burst of laughter leaving him. "Sure," He patronized, returning to his room.

The brightness of the room momentarily hurt his eyes when he returned, and it made him realize that the lights in Davian’s room were dimmed.

What was he? A vampire?

Lake got on his bed and it felt a little like he was sleeping on clouds.

The comfort of the bed didn’t care for his worries, dragging him into the world of dreams without much effort.

His luxury of sleep didn’t last long because a few hours later, he was waking up to a hulking figure at the edge of his bed.

Lake felt his heart try to violently leave his chest then, reaching out to turn on his bedside lamp with a sound of disbelief.

"Fuck," He breathed out a curse, his heart still thumping, adrenaline coursing though his veins. "Davian, what are you doing here?"

The Alpha stood beside his bed in a pair of sweatpants, a pillow in hand.

"I didn’t mean to wake you up," Davian said guiltily.

That wasn’t what Lake asked but okay. "I’m already up so it’s fine. What’s wrong?"

"Couldn’t sleep," Davian complained.

Lake was almost certain he was still sleeping, that would perfectly explain the pouting Alpha at his bedside.

Wasn’t he supposed to be the one with sleeping difficulties?

"Fine, come here," He humored him, patting the side of the bed.

Davian didn’t need any more encouragement, getting on the bed.

Lake was too sleepy to drag this out, but he wasn’t going to let this become a bad habit for the Alpha.

He reached out once more to turn off the lamp, the bed was big enough for them to both sleep without making physical contact.

But fat luck that would actually be the outcome because in the darkness of the room, Davian rolled right over to him like they were opposite poles of a magnet.

Lake let it happen, it didn’t interrupt his sleep so he had no complaints.

The fruity scent in the room had been replaced by Davian’s scent, the Alpha’s strong arms keeping him close.

He liked to complain about Davian’s scent because the other alternative was admitting he liked it.
