Chapter 252: -Chapter 252-
With the kind of day they had both had, he had intended on taking a shower - preferably one with his mate - and going right to bed.
But now it was late at night and they were both the furthest from falling asleep.
"I know that," Asher finally spoke, sounding nothing like himself.
He sounded like a sad, beaten-down version of himself, and Caspian hated to hear it.
"...but I wanted to hear it again. I wanted some reassurance and I chose the wrong time, and the wrong way to say it. Then I ran off and went to get drunk..."
Caspian was speechless for a few seconds after Asher’s tirade, he hadn’t expected his mate to be so expressive.
Was it the alcohol after all?
Asher rubbed a hand over his face, letting out a deep sigh. "I’m sorry for all that..."
Caspian moved closer almost subconsciously, standing in between Asher’s legs.
He had noticed that his mate had been acting a bit odd ever since they came to the Pack house, and now that Asher was opening up, he listened intently, his hands finding their home in his tousled hair.
"I got it in my head that the Pack house is a safer place for you than what I can give you, so it was no surprise that I projected my fears on you..."
Caspian could tell that Asher was being very careful and deliberate with his words.
"That turned into an unreasonable fear that I would lose you, so I wanted to reassure myself that you wouldn’t leave me..."
The Alpha spoke slowly, carefully choosing his words and using unlikely words that would be funny in a lighter atmosphere.
Caspian was no longer upset, that emotion was forgotten as soon as he saw an unconscious Asher brought from the car.
His worry and fear for his mate’s safety were forgotten shortly after, and now he was just fond, his heart full.
He waited until Asher got all of his words out before he spoke, practically sitting on the Alpha at that point.
"I wouldn’t call it safe," Caspian started in a light tone, resting his head against Asher’s shoulder when their new position made it difficult to get to the Alpha’s hair.
"The Pack killed my parents, after all, and it has never been a home to me."
Caspian sighed and slipped his eyes shut, deeply relieved to have his mate back. He didn’t like it when they fought.
"I knew what I was getting into when I chose to stay, and if you forget that, I’m happy to remind you over and over again," He opened his eyes with a smile this time, leaning backward so he could get a good look at Asher.
"You mean that, don’t you?" Asher murmured, reminded of the conversation he had with the helpful bartender.
"Always," Caspian promised with that single word, hopping to his feet. "Why don’t you go shower?" He suggested and then hesitated, "Are you fine to shower alone?"
Asher stared up at his mate with the sun in his eyes, "That reads like a trick question." He replied, a teasing quality to his eyes.
Caspian just caught his wrist and pulled him off the bed, knowing that he only managed it because Asher let him.
"Just go wash up," He said in a slightly scolding tone.
Asher obediently did as he was told, quietly heading for the bathroom.
"Wait a moment," Caspian stopped him, walking over.
Asher was still quiet, but it wasn’t that odd quietness that spoke of something bothering him but a serene kind of quiet.
Caspian wordlessly reached for his hand and took off his rings, holding the heavy metal jewelry in his hands. "Don’t fall in there," He cautioned as he walked off to safely keep his mate’s rings.
He sat on the bed as Asher disappeared behind the bathroom door with a quiet chuckle, getting the chance to process all that had just happened.
Caspian never imagined he could get someone like Asher from the start so the fear of losing him had never really crossed his thoughts.
Especially as his mate tended to only focus on him, so much so, that there wasn’t even the opportunity to be jealous of anyone.
But it was really strange for him to hear from Asher that he was scared of losing him.
Asher could get whatever and whomever he wanted - Caspian included, so it was strange to hear of his larger-than-life mate being insecure, but it was also endearing.
He didn’t have to though, Caspian had fallen hard for him from the start, and the thought of leaving him for someone else had never registered in his mind before.
Even while there was the threat of them needing to separate hanging over their head, Caspian had already been resigned to never getting over Asher, and spending the rest of his life single.
The bathroom door opening caught his attention, Asher making his way to their unpacked luggage to grab clothes for bed, which consisted of plain black sweatpants.
Caspian remembered then to take off the jacket he had worn to step out of the bedroom, also getting ready for bed.
"My mouth tastes bitter," Asher complained as they got on the bed.
Caspian couldn’t miss his mate’s pouty tone, a soft smile playing at his lips.
"I’m guessing you didn’t get drunk off wine," He teased.
Asher gave him a sad look, his lips downturned.
"Did you brush your teeth?" He gave in and asked instead, laughing as he did.
"It didn’t help."
Asher still had to be a little bit drunk, it would explain why his Alpha was whining uncharacteristically.
Caspian found it adorable, his chest feeling so much more lighter now that they were no longer arguing.
"Alright, come here," He beckoned his mate, closing the distance between them as well.
Caspian didn’t often scent his mate, as a matter of fact, he doubted he had done that before, there hadn’t exactly been a reason to.
But now, as he leaned in close to kiss Asher, the air around them became heavy with the scent of syrupy, flowery sugar.
