Chapter 229: -Chapter 229-
"Something’s odd," Jael spoke up well into dinner.
Casual conversation about Noah had come up but it was nothing to worry about.
This caught Asher and Caspian’s attention, getting him curious stares from them.
"What is?" Asher asked.
"Noah’s visit?" Caspian chimed in. It was unexpected but it didn’t come off as odd to him.
After hearing Noah’s reason for wanting him to come back to Moonstone, the pieces of the puzzle fell into place.
"No. The High Council’s involvement." The Beta straightened up, dark eyes serious.
His response brought a frown to Asher’s face. "They know everything that went down, but is it really a surprise that they would support a pack affiliated with them over us?"
Jael still didn’t look convinced, but he didn’t push things further, "Yeah, you’re right."
Caspian wasn’t sure what was going on, but he did know that if he completely cut off his ties with Noah, there wouldn’t be a repeat of today.
After dinner, Asher hung back to discuss things with Jael. He went on alone to their bedroom, not about to let Noah ruin his plans for the night.
The easiest way to get things resolved would be for Noah to prepare their divorce papers and have them sent to him.
But Caspian never expected much from the Alpha, he had a feeling that Noah would deliberately make the divorce proceedings messy.
He was stepping out of the bathroom wearing a bathrobe when Asher walked into the bedroom.
Asher beelined right for him to give him a kiss that was all metal and smoke.
"You didn’t wait for me so we could shower together?" Asher complained, holding him close.
Caspian slipped out of his hold with a fond smile, "You showered before dinner," He reminded him, heading for the closet.
He stopped in front of the doors and looked over his shoulder to find his mate right on his tail.
"What are you doing?" Caspian narrowed his eyes at him.
Asher shrugged, "Keeping you company?"
"I don’t need it," He turned the Alpha down, keeping his back to the closet doors. "Go pick a movie we can watch or something."
Asher was still reluctant to leave, and if Caspian didn’t have secret plans he would have indulged his mate being clingy.
Caspian finally got him to give in, going into the closet alone.
He went right to his mate’s clothes, stealing Asher’s shirt to wear to bed.
Well, stealing was mildly used because he would be going right out to meet Asher.
He preferred to take his mate’s worn shirts now, and not the brand new ones still in their coverings.
Now for the perfect addition to the dark red shirt, he had on - the much-awaited lace socks.
Usually, he wore pants to bed because it was starting to get cooler, but a little cool air never hurt anyone.
Asher’s shirt slipped down one of his pale shoulders, barely brushing mid-thigh.
The socks in question just went over his knees, wearing shorts underneath Asher’s shirt for comfort.
"What movie did you settle on?" Caspian asked as he came over to the sitting area.
Asher had simply given him a once-over and then straightened up. "It’s been a while since we caught up on crime shows."
"It has," Caspian chimed in, joining Asher on the couch he was on.
He sat in the perfect position to put his socked legs over his mate, focused on the screen.
Asher’s keeping his hands tightly to his sides was a dead giveaway; otherwise, he wouldn’t have noticed that his mate thought anything of his accessories.
His Alpha was hyper-focused on the screen, watching intently, as if he had something to do with the true crime series they had settled on.
Caspian moved to get more comfortable, crossing his legs.
"Maybe we should go to bed early," Asher blurted out.
Caspian pasted an innocent look on his face, "You’ve got a busy day at work tomorrow?"
"Right," Asher answered through gritted teeth.
Caspian made a startled sound when Asher swiftly reached for the remote to turn the screen on and then picked him up.
"Do I have to come to bed with you?" He complained half-heartedly, resting his on Asher’s shoulder.
"Yeah," Asher said shortly, leaving no room for arguments.
Caspian was giggling as Asher gently dropped him off on the bed, and promptly tucked him in.
"Don’t you dare sleep over the covers," He scolded, forcing his mate under the covers with him, and immediately gluing himself to Asher’s side.
"Goodnight, love." Caspian said sweetly, the only one having a good time.
Asher’s response was a grumble, and it might have something to do with Caspian being wrapped around him like a pretzel.
He gave in after a short while, falling into his mischievous mate like the Omega pulled him in.
Caspian’s lips pulled up into a smile when Asher gave him a forehead kiss.
The next morning, Caspian was up as soon as Asher got out of bed, unable to go back to sleep.
Having Asher kiss his goodbye wasn’t enough that morning. He needed to wave his mate goodbye from the front doors like he had done the evening before.
So he waited untill Asher left their bedroom with the thought that he would go back to sleep after their goodbyes.
Then he dashed all the way down the hallways and down the stairs, throwing open the doors just as Asher was about to get into the car with Jael.
"Come back early for dinner!" He beamed at his mate, waving.
Jael chuckled to himself as he got in the driver’s seat, but Asher was stunned for several seconds, his eyes wide in surprise.
There was generous throat-clearing amongst the men stationed at the gates, a lot of them looking away to hide their smiles.
Caspian ducked back into the house before Asher could come over to him, hurrying back to bed with the same energy he used to leave it.
It was so strange; he got happier the longer he was with Asher.
