Chapter 166: +Chapter 166+
Caspian was so invested in the movie that he was startled when his phone rang, completely forgetting that he even had it on him.
It was Asher calling so he stepped out of the cinema room to pick up...
"...Did you just wake up?" Asher was quick to ask after he got on the call.
Caspian felt affronted by this, "Of course not, what do you take me for?"
"So, when did you wake up?" The Alpha insisted, and he could hear the laughter in his voice.
Caspian was really contemplating hanging up then, Asher taking the time to check up on him was nice, but why did this feel like an interrogation?
"At noon," He admitted with a grumble, "But why is it so important when I wake up anyway, I’m not exactly busy."
"I had a feeling you wouldn’t remember..."
"Remember what?" Caspian asked in a rush, cutting in. He felt self-defensive for some reason, and Asher sounding like he was a second away from breaking into laughter didn’t help.
"That you were begging me not to leave this morning," Asher revealed, chuckling as he did.
Caspian’s eyes widened, "I was not," He balked.
"I almost gave in, but I could tell you were still a little drunk." Asher went on like he didn’t hear his denial. "You wouldn’t like it if I ditched work for tha-"
The deafening sound of what was clearly a gunshot going off made Caspian jump.
"Asher? Asher? What was that?" He asked in panic.
"Shit, sorry, did that hurt your ears?" Asher asked calmly, sounding more concerned for Caspian’s ears than anything else.
"My ears are fine," Caspian clenched a fist, "Are you alright? Where are you?"
"Downtown," Asher kept up the lively conversation, "I’m fine, I’m just getting shot at."
Caspian fish mouthed for a few seconds, "Well, focus on that!" He pointed out the obvious in complete disbelief.
"But this is the only chance I’ll get to talk to you..."
The sound on the call became muffled at that point, like Asher had covered the speaker with a hand, but it wasn’t enough to completely silence the sound of more shots going off.
"I’m hanging up," Caspian was quick to say when he could hear Asher again.
"Wait-"
"Asher," Caspian warned, worry bubbling up his throat. "Is Jael there?"
"Yeah, he is," Asher sounded chipper, "He’s cursing at me."
"We’ll talk when you get home," Caspian stayed on track when Asher started to go off topic.
"I’ll be home late today," Asher said quietly, sounding troubled for the first time.
"I’ll stay up," Caspian replied without thinking, hanging up before Asher found another reason to lengthen the conversation.
He would have hung up right after the first shot went off but the panic that Asher might get hurt kept him on the call although that was just as dangerous to him.
Caspian leaned against the wall, his brows furrowed in worry. He knew how dangerous Asher’s job was, had even experienced it first-hand a couple of times.
Maybe it was because their relationship had gotten better, and their temporary arrangement had turned into something more long term.
Or maybe he was just being forced to confront the fact that Asher wasn’t indestructible.
His throat tightened up at the thought, the crease in his brow darkening.
Asher took care to keep the dark parts of his position away from him so that Alpha calling just now felt like a show of trust.
Caspian sighed and straight up, he could just be overthinking the entire phone call, which wouldn’t do any good.
He knew what he was getting into from the first time Asher asked him to make a choice, and the last thing he wanted was for Asher to feel like he had to make a choice between easing his fears and being a Mafia King.
Caspian returned to the cinema room, only remembering the movie he had previously been so invested in when he stepped in.
He glanced at his phone to see that it was already late in the afternoon, they had been watching the romantic drama for over three hours.
He had eaten an early lunch, so he wasn’t hungry, but he was worried about Peter and Keith.
"Are you guys hungry?" He asked as he walked over to them.
Keith glanced up from his phone, and Caspian noticed for the first time that he wasn’t even paying attention to the screen.
"We’ve eaten enough popcorn to feed a small movie theater," Keith said flatly.
"It wasn’t even that much," Caspian demurred, walking over to Peter to find him knocked out with his hand in an empty bowl of popcorn.
"Actually, maybe it was," He muttered.
He hadn’t even noticed that his bodyguard was already knocked out, he had thought that Peter was just really focused on the movie.
"Maybe you should help him home instead," Caspian addressed Keith.
"No can do," Keith rose to his feet, "We have to hang around in case you need us."
"No, you don’t," Caspian frowned, "Here, give me your number, I’ll just call you if I need you."
Keith blinked at the suggestions, buffering for a few minutes. If it were just up to him, he would prefer that arrangement but it kind of felt like they would be slacking off work if he agreed.
Not like they were exactly doing much by camping out in leisure rooms and playing board games.
"Ah, sure." He agreed.
They were supposed to listen to Caspian after all, so he was just doing his job by accepting the generous offer handed to him.
He would basically be getting paid to hang out in his apartment and play games all day, he would be dumb to turn it down.
He went over to help Peter up after giving Caspian his number, nudging the Beta awake.
Peter didn’t even flinch, making Keith’s tries to wake him up devolve into brusquely shaking him up.
"Uh... maybe you should just help him up." Caspian chimed in when Keith was starting to get increasingly frustrated.
"Right," Keith muttered darkly, pulling Peter to his feet and starting for the door while supporting his dead asleep partner’s weight.
"Call anytime and we’ll show up ASAP," He said to Caspian as he left through the double doors.
