Chapter 93: Chapter 92. Behind The Stage
With mouth still full of canapés, Sarah greeted the first son back. "Owh--ih yuh, offah."
Mason’s furrowed brows grew deeper as he looked at Sarah disapprovingly. First, the way she spoke with food still in her mouth, made him wince and stop in his tracks before any stray crumb landed on his suit.
Second, the way Sarah bared her skin for all to see.
He glanced sharply at the bodyguard behind her, the one who had seen the rest of it, which was not concealed by the dress. He didn’t care much at first, since he could just get rid of the man easily once the time came. But something he had heard from the aunt lately had made him worried. And pissed.
Seeing this dog, which was supposed of a lowly birth, getting dolled up in a brand new suit and had the girls and women glancing his way was infuriating. Even more so seeing Sarah kept her hands around the dog’s arm most of the time.
Eyes twitching at the handsome appearance even he could not deny, Mason addressed the bodyguard coldly. "Get me some drinks, pup."
"Hey, you can’t call him that! I’m the only one who can!" Sarah pulled the bodyguard behind her, as if protecting the man. She pursed her lips as if someone was disturbing her favorite pet, and it did not quell Mason’s irritation one bit.
"Fine," the first son rolled his eyes. "Get me some drinks, dog."
"Oppa! Why are you ordering my man around?"
Her man? The corner of Mason’s eye twitched. He was trying to be nonchalant, but his voice came out sharp and dripped with mockery. "Why not? He is still our family’s servant."
"No, he is mine," Sarah twisted her lips and glared at the older man.
Mason tilted his head haughtily in response, using the chairman’s way to poke at Sarah. "I’m the one who procured him for you, Sarah."
And just like the chairman, Mason annoyingly had a way of dismissing Hajin from his employment in the family since the recruitment came from him. Not directly, but he could make a dismissal recommendation. It was something that she had critically forgotten while provoking the man, and it came back to bite her.
"Ugh--"
"...Master?"
Hajin didn’t like this situation where the first son was clearly trying to drive him away, but he couldn’t show it outwardly, which was frustrating. All he could do was ask Sarah what he should do, hoping that Sarah would fight to keep him beside her.
Sarah, however, didn’t want to make too much of a scene. Shocking people with her appearance was different from creating problems. She would gladly do so if it was her family’s event, but Sarah didn’t want to make a problem in an event hosted by her investor’s lover.
Besides...it wasn’t like Mason could do anything in this place. It was a party held by Mirae, and each employee was picked by Kang Jun’s man. If he were to do anything suspicious here, it would be akin to a social suicide. And if she truly needed to escape, she could use Daniel or even Kang Jun’s name to get away.
With a sigh, she decided to relent and see what Mason wanted to say. "Fine, just be a good boy and fetch him some water, puppy."
Hajin almost scowled in reflex, but Sarah turned their position so his back was against Mason and his expression wouldn’t be seen. As if she was the one who couldn’t let the man go, Sarah reached up and held onto the broad shoulder, tilting her head alluringly.
"Just so he won’t tell you to go back and forth, just fetch all kinds of drinks at once. Don’t--" she grasped Hajin’s face, staring straight into the grey eyes. "--flirt with anyone, okay?"
"...as you wish," Hajin replied blankly, and Sarah smiled sweetly in response, tiptoeing to plant a quick peck on his cheek.
She waved at the tensed broad back who was walking away rather hesitantly, before shifting her gaze back to the man in front of her.
"Happy now?" Sarah rolled her eyes and pursed her lips after, openly sulking with hands on her hips. Staring at the older man, she wondered if Mason just wanted to get rid of Hajin because he didn’t like the man, or if there was something more substantial he wanted to say to her.
Mason’s eyes, however, were on her inked shoulder. "Must you wear something so inappropriate?"
"Why?" Sarah looked around, at the mamy variation of strapless and off-shoulder dresses around them. "A lot of people wear something like this too."
The brows furrowed deeper. "They don’t have a tattoo."
"Oh, don’t be so boring, Oppa. What’s wrong with a little bit of ink?" Sarah swatted the air dismissively.
Mason hissed. "That’s not a little bit."
Yeah, of course it wasn’t. Sarah chose to have it big not only as a reminder of her resolve, but also because she knew Mason didn’t like tattoed, smoking women. She wanted to see if it would cease his desire for her, but...it didn’t seem so. His gaze seemed to say that he would have her lasered it off as soon as he could, however.
"There are people with drawings all over their bodies, you know. I think this one is rather tame," Sarah shrugged her inked shoulder. "I’m thinking of adding some on my back and here," she rubbed her other shoulder and inner wrist, "I think it’ll be cute--ouch?"
Sarah frowned as Mason snatched her hand and almost pulled her toward him. Thankfully, Mason wasn’t that strong and Sarah actually had muscle from her self-defense classes.
"What is the meaning of this?" Sarah pulled her hand away, glaring openly at the first son.
"You’re not abroad anymore. Don’t you think it’s time for you to stop acting so childishly?" Mason hissed through smiling lips, trying to make his face look nonchalant as if they only had a normal sibling conversation.
While she managed to get her arm off Mason’s grip, the sting in her wrist reminded Sarah of how controlling Mason was in her previous life. Sure, he was all sweet and accommodating at the start, but once she became dependent on him, he didn’t bother with the sweetness anymore. He dictated everything in her life, including what she could do, what she could wear, what she could eat, and who could she meet. Control, control, control--he had to take hold of her life or he would flip out and degrade her into submission.
Not anymore.
Sarah tilted her head, putting on a mockingly innocent face. "Oh? But I thought you liked me to be childish?"
"You’re being unruly now, Sarah."
"So? It’s not like me being unruly will bring disadvantage to you," Sarah shrugged.
In truth, it did. In her previous life, Mason had a higher position and better reputation thanks to Sarah working behind the scenes. He engaged faster because of that reputation, and was already preparing for the wedding, which happened in the fall.
But he wouldn’t know any of it.
Come to think of it, shouldn’t he come with his fiancee instead of his mother? That woman must be somewhere in this hall, perhaps with her own circle--the kind that Amber had. To think that someone who prioritized his image like Mason did not insist on coming together meant they were truly still on the surface level. Didn’t even bother to pretend they were attracted to each other despite getting engaged. Wasn’t it ironic that she looked more intimate with Daniel while having no relationship?
It also meant that the woman was still on top of him, since Mason couldn’t make her submit yet. She had always been a fierce one, but Sarah remembered she was pretty cordial and obedient to Mason until that whole recording thing.
Sarah felt a sense of satisfaction knowing that just by staying out of the picture and doing nothing, she set Mason back so much.
It showed how much her ’family’ actually depended on their ’slave’ in the past.
Mason frowned at the challenging tone behind that innocent-looking expression. "You bring a bad reputation to our family."
"Oh, what a rubbish!" Sarah snorted and waved her hand dismissively. "Our wares are based on trends, Oppa. Youngsters and celebrities have tattoos these days, you know? If you keep having these outdated thoughts, you won’t be able to bring the company up."
"Sarah!"
"Don’t put on such a scary face, Oppa. You’ll scare your fiancee away," Sarah chuckled lightly. "Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have an appointment with Kang Jun-ssi."
"Come back here!" Mason hissed and approached Sarah with an unusual ferocity in his gaze. "Do you think the chairman is someone you can just meet?"
Sarah deftly kept her hands behind her back while facing the older man. "Why not? He’s--"
"There you are!"
And just in time, someone’s beaming voice came from another side, approaching them with calm, but powerful steps. Both of them turned their head at the newcomer, and Mason widened his eyes as the host of the party, the chairman of Mirae Group himself was walking toward them.
