Chapter 89: Chapter 88. So Little Time, So Much To Do

In front of them, several cars were parked right before the entrance to the hill: a wooden gate of some sort that marked the beginning of a manmade trail. Three imposing men stood like guards around the gate, and a group of grumbling seniors stared at them not far away.

Up the trail, standing on a rather flat side of the hills, were the man who met Sarah the other day--Henry or something--and another man who dressed in something more casual. They were facing each other, talking while looking around the hill. The other man held what looked like a map in his hand, while pointing here and there.

"That’s the person?" Hajin crinkled his nose. "His team must have touched the photo."

Sarah rolled her eyes. "Don’t act insecure, puppy."

"Me? Where?" Hajin widened his eyes in genuine surprise.

"Commenting on someone’s appearance is a sign," Sarah flicked the bodyguard on the forehead. "Don’t lower yourself to that kind of spite. It’s not charming."

Hajin pressed his twitching lips; he wanted to giggle from the reprimand since it felt nice, but he worried Sarah would get angry for real. Instead, he opted to hold the girl’s hand and kissed it. "Are you going to come out, Master?"

"Let’s just watch for a bit," Sarah tapped the door handle with her free hand, letting Hajin hold her other one as she observed the faraway men.

It was good that the guards were focusing on the seemingly protesting citizens, so they didn’t notice a new car parked behind the truck. Still, if they wanted to go and listen to Henry’s conversation, they would need to take another route, possibly a hidden one. However, a hidden route usually involved climbing, and even without a sprained ankle, her leg was not in perfect condition.

Hadn’t been since that accident.

Hajin would say he could carry her there, but while Sarah didn’t mind it after being carried so many times, it would be weird to be seen like that in the middle of the day.

Should they just turn back? Or should she come out and pretend to be there coincidentally and stop because she saw Henry? It seemed like they were having a serious conversation, and she wanted to eavesdrop.

Sarah glanced back at her bodyguard and asked him just in case--since he said he was good at everything but UFO catcher and spicy food. "Can you read lips?"

"To some extent," the man nodded. How else would he know what Sarah whispered on his first fight night?

Sarah arched her brow--so he was indeed good at everything?

Hajin leaned toward Sarah, prompting the girl to lean back in surprise. But the grey eyes were focused on the view of the hill. Ah...indeed, he would be able to see better from her seat.

Sarah was about to suggest changing their seat, but she didn’t want to break the man’s concentration. And so, she endured the nice fragrance wafting from Hajin’s neck and stared at the pretty grey shade.

"They talked some rubbish about the land’s condition," Hajin said.

Sarah narrowed her eyes. "You’re not just making that up, are you?"

"Even if I do, you wouldn’t know," he chuckled, and Sarah smacked his cheek in retaliation. "Ouch, Master? You’re disturbing my--okay, okay--I’m going to do it seriously now."

Sarah pursed her lips in annoyance, but it soon died down once Hajin relayed what he read from his sharp, 20/20 eyesight.

"There’s no problem, right?" the bast--Henry or whatever--asked.

"There’s a bit of resistance from the surrounding citizens, but that kind of thing is normal," the other man said while glancing at the congregation around the gate. From his gaze, the man truly didn’t care about it--or rather, he looked like he would just make the protesting people disappear if they kept at it. "They think the hills and mountains are theirs just because they have been living around here."

Henry clicked his tongue, looking more annoyed than worried. The man sneered and added. "Don’t worry--the one with the land deeds already has a secret deal with us. All that’s left is looking for some of the missing listed owners."

"What do you mean by missing?" Henry frowned, now looking annoyed at the man instead.

"We haven’t been able to track them through the local registry. Need to go through the central--but as long as there’s a name, I will find them."

"If there is no name?"

"Then, we’ll just take the land."

Henry arched his brow and both of them laughed like a pair of third-rate villains. The sound carried down the hill and made the protesting residents even more agitated. Of course, the man on the hill didn’t care one bit.

"Even if the owner comes later, we’ll just give compensation. Just give them the lowest deal since they are too hard to find," the man said--that would mean Master’s land, it seems.

Henry frowned again, looking at the man dubiously. "Won’t it be a problem?"

"That’s what having a connection is for...Sir," the man looked like he didn’t want to use honorifics at all. But he forced a grin while making a money sign with his fingers.

As expected, everything could be solved with money so long as human greed still prevailed.

Henry chuckled, for some reason, looked a bit uglier than before--ouch. "Well, I’ll leave it to you people from Daesung Construction."

"Yes, you don’t need to worry."

"Shall I continue?" Hajin turned his head, almost making Sarah’s heart jump out of her chest.

She pushed the bodyguard’s head away. "Let’s head back."

They seemed nearly done with the inspection, so they might get down soon and see Sarah’s car. Since she already knew what they were talking about and even got a name, there was no need to see the man anymore.

"Understood," Hajin chuckled and immediately turned the car around, looking very much pleased that Sarah didn’t have to meet the man anymore.

Quietly, while the residents were still making noises, the car reversed and turned around, leaving the hill. Looking at the location, Sarah guessed her maternal grandparents must have owned it for a long, long time. Perhaps not long after the war. It would explain why the registry was a bit obscured.

"Hmm... resistance," Sarah muttered on their way to her hair appointment. "Why do you think there’s resistance?"

"A lot of reasons," Hajin tapped the steering wheel while answering. "Maybe the mountain was used for their livelihood, or maybe they think the construction will damage the environment."

"It’s usually true for a factory, but I heard the plan is to turn the place into an eco-friendly luxury residential complex," Sarah mused.

"Maybe they don’t want to live on the periphery of the rich?" Hajin chuckled. "Segregation is mentally debilitating, and it means they can no longer roam around the place they used to treat as their backyard."

"Hmm..." Sarah lolled her head back, staring at the bright summer sky outside that was nearing its end. "Well, Sol said he would look into it more, so we’ll know in due time."

"Right..."

Thinking back, she had made the team do a lot of things for her. Just counting the stuff they were currently doing for her, there was that business about Director Seo’s information, Ethan’s interrogation, and the land. That was outside the stuff she asked Austin to do.

Phew...it was good that she asked Yonghwa to ’invest’ in her. Truly, even with Hajin’s help, it would be hard for her to do everything alone. She hadn’t even managed to find anything about the relationship between the third wife and the chairman’s younger brother--if there was any.

Hopefully, their new little spy worked as well as she promised.

"Ah...so many things to investigate," Sarah sighed before slurping the iced coffee they bought earlier, letting the cold soothe her inside. "And I thought it would be straightforward once I found the culprit."

Hajin narrowed his eyes and gripped the steering wheel tightly to prevent himself from hitting something. While Sarah used him as a supporting pillar at that golf course, she also functioned as a chain that held him back from pummeling both the chairman and the snake.

Honestly, he was probably the one who needed Sarah more at that gold course.

"Can’t we just get rid of him?" he asked in a low voice that would have startled Sarah with how malicious it was before--but now, she was already used to it.

Besides, the malice was something she felt within herself.

"Not yet," she replied calmly, looking at the slightly yellow tint at the edge of the leaves on the trees outside. "I need to know his reason, and..." she clenched her fist, eyes flashing dangerously, "I need his downfall to be beneficial for me."

She turned toward Hajin and curled her eyes, lips stretched into a deep smile.

"That would be the best revenge, don’t you think?"

Hajin answered it with the same smile that made his charming visage even more bewitching. There was a genuine mirth in his eyes, tinged with mischief.

Ahh...his master finally learned how not to be soft.
