Chapter 116: Aveline’s Help (1)

Charlotte spent almost an hour chatting with her friends in the group chat. In that long, yet somehow short, span of time, they shared life updates and gave each other support, like nothing had ever changed.

For the first time in so long, Charlotte found herself smiling at her phone, laughing quietly at the screen like her heart had finally remembered what happiness felt like.

"So, Tessa’s engaged to her boyfriend," Charlotte said with a smile as she turned to Aveline. "I’m glad Leon finally decided to marry her."

"Ah ... Tessa isn’t with him anymore," Aveline replied casually. "She has a new boyfriend now. His name is Hans."

"Oh."

The smile on Charlotte’s face slowly faded as the realization hit her because she had missed out on so many important moments in her friends’ lives.

"I didn’t know that."

Noticing how Charlotte’s mood had shifted, Aveline tried to reassure her. "Hey, don’t be sad. It’s okay," she said kindly. "We have plenty of time to catch up. We’re still here and so are you, right?"

Charlotte let out a soft sigh of relief, slowly realizing that she was just starting a new Chapter in her life. Of course there would be things she needed to rewrite, piece by piece.

"You’re right," she said, smiling again. "I’m not going anywhere."

Charlotte closed the group chat and decided to talk with the others later. Right now, she wanted to focus on the person sitting in front of her.

"Okay, so ... since we’ve been talking about my life updates this whole time, let’s talk about you now." Charlotte chuckled softly. "Where are you working now?"

"Ah, right," Aveline said, reaching into her bag and pulling out a business card. She handed it to Charlotte.

"One of the reasons I wanted to meet you in person today, aside from missing you terribly, is because I want to offer you my help."

Charlotte took the card and read the print on it: The Daily Horizon. Just below Aveline’s name, it said Senior Investigative Journalist.

"Aveline! I can’t believe it!" Charlotte exclaimed with excitement. "This was your dream back in high school and you actually made it come true!"

Back then, Aveline used to tell Charlotte that she wanted to become a journalist, someone brave, someone who uncovered the truth.

Someone who could help Charlotte someday if she ever got caught up in a scandal.

But after graduation, Aveline’s parents had forced her to enroll in medical school.

The last time Charlotte saw her, she was still in her clinical rotation, wearing a white coat she didn’t love.

She never would’ve guessed that in just five years, Aveline would fight her way through and actually achieve what she had always wanted most.

"It was hard," Aveline admitted, "breaking free from my parents’ grip. But I did it." She smiled.

Charlotte looked at her with soft eyes. "It must’ve been really tough."

Aveline smiled bitterly. "Yeah. They really wanted me to carry on the family legacy and become a doctor. But in the end, I ran away. I stayed with Isla for a few months, in her apartment, until I got an internship at The Daily Horizon."

Charlotte took a deep breath, feeling a bit guilty that she hadn’t been there when Aveline was going through all of that.

If she hadn’t married Julian, she would’ve opened her home to Aveline in a heartbeat.

She would’ve been right there beside her, cheering her on through the chaos.

But there was no use drowning in what ifs.

What mattered was that Aveline had survived. She had fought her way forward and now, she was living the dream she had always held onto.

"But that’s not the point, Charlotte. I didn’t give you my business card just to show off my success," Aveline said softly.

"Do you remember the promise I made back then, when I told you I wanted to become a journalist?"

Charlotte paused to think for a moment before shaking her head. "No, Aveline. It’s okay. You don’t need to get involved in my mess. It’s ... honestly kind of complicated."

And dangerous.

Aveline was human. If she got tangled up in a conflict between werewolves, it could put her life at serious risk.

"Your support is more than enough for me," Charlotte added softly. "Truly."

"Charlotte," Aveline said suddenly, her voice turning firm.

She reached out and held Charlotte’s hand, gripping it tightly as she looked her straight in the eyes, so deeply that Charlotte couldn’t bring herself to look away.

"I made you a promise that I would help you if you ever got into trouble."

She continued, "Whether it’s something small or life-threatening, I intend to keep that promise. And if you refuse to let me help, it’s the same as saying my promise meant nothing to you."

"No, it’s not like that, and you know it!" Charlotte’s voice rose for a second, then lowered it again as she said, "They’re werewolves, Aveline. My situation is too dangerous. Even my bodyguard almost died protecting me not long ago."

Charlotte shook her head, her voice trembling. "I can’t bear the thought of something like that happening to you."

Even now, Charlotte sometimes had nightmares about Isolde getting shot in front of her.

The thought of Aveline facing the same fate made her feel sick.

"Charlotte, you don’t need to worry about that," Aveline said calmly.

"But—"

"I have a boyfriend now," Aveline suddenly cut her off. "And he’s a Lycan."

Charlotte, who had been about to respond, snapped her mouth shut.

Her words caught in her throat.

She couldn’t even speak.

Aveline had a boyfriend. That part was fine.

But a Lycan?

How was that even possible?!

"H-How?" she finally asked, blinking in disbelief.

"Well," Aveline began, tilting her head with a small smile, "You know I still have witch blood in me, right? So I’m not exactly 100% human."

She leaned forward slightly. "And did you also know that most Lycans don’t end up with mates from their own kind?"

Charlotte blinked a few times, shaking her head slightly, trying to pull herself out of the shock.

"Alright ... I know that. But Aveline, do you realize that Lycans are even more brutal than werewolves?"

"Oh, come on, Charlotte." Aveline gave her a flat look. "You sound kind of racist right now."

"I’m not!" Charlotte protested. Then she paused, choosing her words carefully. "I just ... I’m scared for you. What if he hurts you? And ...."

She would face the same fate as Charlotte.

At least Charlotte had a healing ability. She could survive, even if every day felt like crawling through hell.

But Aveline?

She didn’t have that kind of power.

If a strong, dangerous Lycan hurt her, she might not survive even a second.

"Aveline," she whispered, "you could die if something goes wrong."

Aveline’s expression softened. She gave Charlotte’s hand a gentle squeeze.

"You really don’t have to worry about that. Just like Damon saved you, my boyfriend saved me too. And trust me, if you met him, you’d know he’s not someone who could hurt anyone. Honestly, I don’t think he’d even kill a kitten."
