Chapter 104: Foreign Grounds
Chapter 104: Chapter 104: Foreign Grounds
ARIA POV
I slammed Selene against a tree, my hand at her throat. Her black eyes opened in shock, but I didn’t loosen my grip.
"Get him out," I growled. "Get Silas out of your head now!"
Behind me, Luna’s yells had turned to whimpers. Lucien held her, trying to comfort her while Mira curled protectively over the boys.
"I—I can’t," Selene gasped, fighting for breath. "He finds us through our dreams. The silver-eyed link."
"Then I’ll make you sleep a different way," I warned, letting my eyes glow silver.
Elder Malin’s hand touched my shoulder. "Aria, wait. If you harm her, you harm her unborn child—another silver-eyed dog, perhaps."
I released my grip unwillingly. Selene slid down the tree trunk, clutching her swollen belly. The black was already disappearing from her eyes, returning to silver.
"How many of us has he found?" I asked.
"Four, including me," she whispered. "Two have already been captured."
"And the fourth?"
"A girl. In the Stone River Pack area, three days north of here." Selene rubbed her neck where my fingers had left marks. "She doesn’t know what she is yet. They keep her as a servant."
"How do you know all this?"
"The same way you do," she responded. "Dreams. Visions. The Moon Goddess shows us pieces, but Silas sees everything we see."
Luna had finally stopped crying. I went to her, taking her tiny body from Lucien’s arms. Her silver eyes locked onto mine.
"He’s gone now, Mama," she said. "But he’ll be back when I sleep."
My heart broke at the fear in her voice. My baby shouldn’t have to worry about a monster entering her dreams.
"We need to move," I decided. "If Silas can track us through our connections, he knows exactly where we are right now."
We went through the night, keeping to the shadows. By dawn, we had reached the edge of unknown country. A scent line marked the boundary—unfamiliar werewolves with a stronger, muskier smell than our pack.
"Stone River Pack," Elder Malin confirmed. "They are... traditional."
"What does that mean?" Mira asked, shifting Felix to her other hip as he wiggled.
"It means they believe Omegas should be seen, not heard," the old wolf answered. "And females lead only through their mates."
I snorted. "They’re in for a surprise, then."
Lucien looked worried. "Maybe I should do the talking."
"No," I said strongly. "If there’s a silver-eyed wolf here being kept as a servant, these wolves need to see what she could become."
We crossed the boundary carefully. The forest here was different—darker, with giant pine trees blocking the morning sun. The ground beneath our feet was covered with sharp rocks that made walking tough.
"Their Alpha is called Varro," Elder Malin said quietly. "He has ruled for forty years through fear and strength alone."
"Sounds charming," I muttered.
We hadn’t gone more than a mile when we heard howls—deep, threatening sounds that echoed through the woods. Minutes later, six huge wolves surrounded us, teeth bared.
I passed Luna to Mira and stepped forward. "I am Aria, Silver Alpha of the United Packs. We seek meeting with Alpha Varro."
The largest wolf—gray with war scars across his muzzle—growled low in his throat. Then he changed into human form, a naked man in his fifties with cold, calculating eyes.
"Female Alphas do not exist," he said simply. "And you have entered our land without permission. Give me one reason why I shouldn’t kill you where you stand."
I let my eyes glow silver. "Because the Moon Goddess herself has sent me to find one of yours. A girl with silver eyes."
For just a moment, doubt flashed across Varro’s face. Then his face hardened again.
"There is no such wolf in my pack," he said. "But I will give you guest rights for one night. Follow me."
The Stone River Pack’s village was unlike anything I’d seen before. Where our pack lived in modern buildings with power and running water, these wolves lived in stone huts built into the side of a mountain. Wolves of all ages stopped to stare as we passed. The division between ranks was instantly obvious—Alphas walked tall in the center of pathways, while Omegas scurried along the edges with downcast eyes.
"This is how all packs used to live," Elder Malin whispered to me. "Before the changes you brought."
We were led to a round building at the center of the town. Inside, Alpha Varro sat on a chair made of antlers and bones.
"You may rest here tonight," he said. "Tomorrow, you will leave our territory."
"Not without the silver-eyed wolf," I maintained.
Varro’s eyes narrowed. "I told you, there is no such wolf here."
"He’s lying," Luna whispered, loud enough for everyone to hear.
All eyes turned to my daughter. Varro leaned forward, seeing her silver eyes for the first time.
"The child has the moon’s mark," he said, surprise obvious in his voice.
"As do I," I answered. "And there is another here with the same mark. The Moon Goddess has shown her to me."
Before Varro could answer, a young female entered carrying a tray of water cups. She kept her eyes down, her long dark hair hiding her face. But I felt it immediately—the pull, the link between us.
"Look at me," I said softly to the girl.
Slowly, she raised her head. When our eyes met—silver to silver—a jolt of energy passed between us. Cups crashed to the floor as she dropped the tray in shock.
"Impossible," Varro breathed.
"This is Lyra," Elder Malin said, recognizing her from his dreams. "The third silver-eyed wolf the Moon Goddess showed us."
Lyra couldn’t have been more than sixteen. She shook where she stood, looking from me to Luna to Varro in confusion.
"What’s happening?" she whispered.
"You’re like me," I told her gently. "A choice of the Moon Goddess. A possible Alpha."
Varro’s laugh was harsh. "This useless girl? She’s an Omega—the lowest of the low. She was born to serve, not lead."
"Just like I was," I said, feeling my anger rise. "Until the Moon Goddess decided differently."
Lyra’s eyes widened as understanding dawned. "The dreams," she whispered. "I thought they were just dreams."
"They’re real," I told her. "And you need to come with us before—"
A scream from outside cut me off. Then another. And another.
"They’re here," Selene gasped, her eyes turning black again. "Silas found us."
Through the open door, I could see chaos breaking in the settlement. Men in black suits moved through the crowds, shooting those strange darts. Wolves fell where they stood, paralyzed but aware.
"How?" Lucien demanded. "We’ve only been here an hour!"
"Varro told them," Lyra said suddenly, backing away from her Alpha. "He’s been working with the humans for months."
I turned to the Alpha in shock, but the guilt on his face confirmed Lyra’s words.
"They promised to make us stronger," Varro said, not meeting my eyes. "To help us fight against packs like yours that want to destroy our way of life."
"By selling out your own kind?" I asked in anger.
"By protecting our traditions!" he shot back.
A man appeared in the doorway—not Silas, but a human in a white coat over military gear.
"We’ll take the silver-eyed ones," he said quietly. "As agreed."
Varro nodded, and suddenly we were surrounded by his soldiers. We were stuck.
I pushed Luna behind me, trying to cover her with my body. Lucien and Mira moved to protect the boys. Elder Malin stood with Selene, his ancient eyes looking around for an escape route. Lyra stayed frozen, her silver eyes wide with terror.
"I fulfilled my part," Varro told the human. "Four silver-eyed wolves, as promised."
"Five," the human corrected, looking at Luna. "The child makes five. And the mother is carrying twins that will likely have silver eyes as well."
My blood ran cold. "What?"
The human smiled. "Congratulations, Ms. Aria. Our scans identify two heartbeats. Silas will be so pleased."
I hadn’t even guessed... but suddenly the increased fatigue, the strange cravings—it all made sense. I was pregnant again.
"Run!" I shouted to my friends.
But it was too late. The doors slammed shut, locking us inside.
And somewhere in the distance, I heard Silas laughing.
