Chapter 84: Chapter 79: Help (6)
A light, deliberate touch against his cheek jolted him out of his sleep. The warmth of fingers lingered, in contrast to the cool night air. Gabriel fluttered his lashes, and as his dark eyes opened, they met Damian’s piercing stare.
For a moment, he lay still, his body sluggish from sleep but his mind alert. Damian’s face hovered above him, his expression unreadable, but the intensity in his eyes said everything. Gabriel’s heart skipped, caught between the echoes of a dream and the weight of reality pressing down on him.
"Damian?" The word came out in a breathless whisper, more from surprise than anything else. His voice was still heavy with sleep, and he blinked several times, attempting to adjust to the dim light and proximity of the man in front of him.
Damian remained motionless, his hand still resting on Gabriel’s cheek, as if he were waiting for something—perhaps for Gabriel to fully awaken, or for the tension in the room to shift in his favor. The silence stretched long and thick between them.
Gabriel shifted slightly in his seat, feeling the plushness of the chair beneath him. He reached for Damian’s withdrawing hand. He did not know whether this was a dream or reality, and he had no idea where he was. He had not had a dream-free night in years. Damian’s hand was massive over his, strong and rough from the calouses gained through training.
"What... are you doing here?" Gabriel’s voice sounded strange even to him—a mix of confusion and something deeper—a longing after the warmth of Damian’s hand.
Damian chuckled softly, carefully bending his fingers over Gabriel’s hand. "Well, this is my balcony; you fell asleep while waiting for me."
Gabriel’s mind was swirling in a haze, the remnants of his dream fading as the reality of Damian’s presence set in. He tried to concentrate, but his senses appeared to be working in slow motion, with the warmth of Damian’s touch still lingering on his skin. His gaze lingered on the hand resting against his, the stark contrast between their skins, but the closeness felt almost... intimate. The simplicity of the moment did nothing to ease the flood of emotions stirring inside him.
Damian’s low and controlled voice broke the silence again. "You didn’t have to wait for me. You could’ve left whenever you wanted." There was a hint of amusement in his words, but his eyes remained unreadable, studying Gabriel as if trying to decipher something he hadn’t yet figured out.
Gabriel’s pulse quickened, but he did not remove his hand. He wasn’t sure why. The confusion and heat of the moment were becoming too much. He had spent so much time keeping his distance, trying to bury the thoughts and feelings that Damian seemed to pull out of him effortlessly. Now that they only had silence and a shared space, it felt like everything was unraveling.
He had been waiting for Damian for this exact moment, but he had not realized it until now. His breath caught as the truth hit him, unmistakable and undeniable. He had already made his decision in the morning, but by the evening, he was attempting to postpone it. He was afraid of what it would mean to entrust himself to the care of others, specifically Damian.
Gabriel expected Damian to use his pheromones on him to force him to submit, but up until now, he had only calmed him. Even now, the perfect chance for him, he didn’t use them.
For the first time, Gabriel didn’t want to fight it. He wanted to take a chance. He wanted to embrace the feeling that had always been there—a pull that couldn’t be ignored. His mind was racing, but his body was certain. He reached up, his fingers trembling slightly as they touched Damian’s jaw, feeling the sharpness of his features. Damian’s gaze never left him; his eyes were golden and intense, waiting for Gabriel to make the move.
Gabriel’s pulse quickened. He was already here. He had already decided. The years of hesitation, the doubts—they all faded into the background as he slowly leaned forward, closing the distance between them. His lips parted slightly, and he felt his breath catch in his throat as he got closer to Damian.
When their lips finally met, it was gentle at first, a slow, tentative brush that made Gabriel’s head spin. But their kiss intensified quickly, burning away the uncertainty. Damian’s free hand reached for his cheek, guiding and steadying him, and Gabriel instinctively followed, his other hand clutching the fabric of Damian’s robe for support.
Damian’s hand slid from Gabriel’s cheek to the back of his neck, his fingers gently threading through the soft strands of Gabriel’s hair, drawing him closer. He could feel Gabriel’s body tense against him, hesitant but yearning. Damian didn’t rush. He could tell Gabriel was still figuring it out, adjusting to the weight of everything between them. But Damian wasn’t going to let him hold back. Gabriel stated it.
His thumb brushed along Gabriel’s bottom lip, slowly tracing the curve and feeling Gabriel’s breath catch at the soft touch. He applied only the slightest pressure, gently pulling Gabriel’s lips to part them. Damian’s touch was patient, deliberate, as he waited for Gabriel to decide to give him more.
Gabriel’s breath caught, and his eyes briefly closed. Damian kept his gaze, noticing how Gabriel’s lips trembled slightly under his touch, sensing a shift in him. Damian leaned in closer with a barely-there smile, his lips brushing Gabriel’s once more—lightly at first, but just enough to deepen their bond.
The moment Gabriel’s lips opened ever so slightly, Damian took the opportunity, his kiss turning deeper and more purposeful. He didn’t force it. Instead, he brushed his tongue against Gabriel’s lower lip, testing the waters and seeking permission without speaking. The subtle invitation was enough. Gabriel’s breath caught, and he responded slowly, oh so slowly, by parting his lips just enough to give Damian deeper access.
Damian’s heart raced with delight at his small victory, but he did not show it. His tongue slid into Gabriel’s warm mouth, moving softly and slowly, tasting him, savoring the intimacy of the moment. His other hand cupped Gabriel’s jaw, keeping him steady as he deepened the kiss, coaxing Gabriel to follow his lead and let the kiss unfold with quiet intensity.
