Chapter 87: REPORTING TO LORD MARCEL
Chapter 87: REPORTING TO LORD MARCEL
{"Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one"}
"Wait."
Elder Dante’s words stopped me in my tracks. I turned to him, irritation flashing in my eyes, but his serious expression made me pause.
"We need to get rid of the scent of Blood Stone Mountain first," he explained.
The thought hadn’t even crossed my mind, but he was right. If we walked into the Coven Council reeking of that cursed place, it would raise unnecessary suspicion.
Then, I remembered the incense Ma had once burned to mask scents. Without another word, I beckoned Dante to follow me to the library. The rich aroma of the incense filled the room as I set it alight, letting the smoke cleanse the lingering stench from our skin.
After ensuring the scent was masked, I changed into fresh clothes, feeling slightly more at ease. When I stepped out, I was surprised to find that Elder Dante had done the same.
I smirked at him, unable to resist the amusement bubbling inside me. "So, Ma’s already forced you to live here, huh?"
He gave me a deadpan look, already knowing where this was headed. "Don’t," he interjected before I could say more.
A light chuckle escaped my lips. I shook my head, unable to help myself. "Sooner or later, we’ll have to talk about it." Dante sighed but didn’t argue. He knew as well as I did—some conversations were inevitable, but for now we had urgent matters to attend to.
Finally, we arrived at the Coven Council Hall, and the sight before me was unlike anything I had ever seen. The place was filled to the brim, a stark contrast to the usual sparse attendance. The energy in the room was thick with tension, and my beast, Kayne, stirred within me, sensing the unrest.
As we approached, the guards stationed at the entrance turned abruptly, their eyes widening in shock when they saw me. They hesitated for only a moment before stepping aside, allowing us to pass. Their reaction only fueled the unease churning inside me.
The moment we stepped into the grand hall, Ma’s furious voice rang out.
"You dare summon me over my child?" she yelled, her tone sharp with anger. "Where is my son? Where is Freyr? Lord Marcel, you gave him a mission. Do you not know where he is?"
She stood tall and unyielding, her presence commanding as she glared at the council members. Idris and Tio shifted uncomfortably, their mouths opening to respond—
But Dante beat them to it.
"What the hell is going on here?" he hissed, his voice cutting through the tension like a blade.
A wave of silence washed over the hall. Heads turned. Even Lord Marcel, who had been seated with his usual air of authority, stood abruptly, his expression betraying his shock when his gaze landed on me.
My fury simmered just beneath the surface as I locked eyes with Idris and Tio. The two council members took a cautious step back, their unease palpable. Before they could so much as speak, Cassius stepped forward, ready to address me, but Lord Marcel’s hand shot up, halting him in place.
I walked with measured steps toward the center of the room, my gaze shifting to Ma. Standing beside her were Nessa, Aurora, and Qadira, their faces a mixture of concern and confusion.
I exhaled sharply before speaking, my voice cold and laced with barely restrained anger. "What the fuck is this?"
"Lord Marcel summoned us here, sent the royal guards to escort us from the Kayne lands. I have been asking why he did so, and he stated that he gave you a mission to infiltrate Bay Shifter lands and you never did," Ma piped up sarcastically, her sharp gaze fixed on Lord Marcel.
I could see the way his jaw tightened, how he held back a retort. But before he could speak, his uncle, Desmond Marcel, stood up instead, his expression cool and calculating.
"The spy we planted in the Bay Shifter pack reported that you never set foot there," Desmond announced, his tone carrying the weight of accusation.
A chuckle escaped my lips, dark and mocking, as I turned my attention to him. "Tell me, Lord Desmond, was I supposed to walk straight into enemy territory without a disguise?"
He hesitated, clearly taken aback by my question.
Before he could formulate a response, Ma’s voice rang out again, her tone sharp with authority. "Then bring this so-called spy forward. Let him explain himself."
Silence fell over the room, thick with tension. Lord Marcel’s face darkened with barely contained anger, but it was fleeting. With a wave of his hand, he gestured for Desmond to summon the spy.
At that moment, I felt movement behind me. A glance to the side confirmed what I already sensed—Nessa, Aurora, and Qadira had moved to stand behind me, their silent show of solidarity not lost on me.
I gave them a subtle nod, a silent promise that I would protect them.
From across the room, I caught the way Cassius’ mouth pulled into a thin line of displeasure, his gaze flicking between me and Lord Marcel as if weighing the unspoken battle playing out before him.
In minutes, a man appeared at the Coven Council Hall, flanked by two guards. His scent was unmistakable, the thick musk of shifter wolves clung to him, sharp and distinct even in the vast chamber. A ripple of discomfort passed through the gathered council members as many wrinkled their noses in distaste at the smell.
His steps were measured, cautious, his eyes cast downward as he approached. But when he neared Lord Marcel, he straightened slightly and bowed, his voice tight with submission. "Lord Marcel. Coven Council."
Lord Marcel’s gaze flickered toward Desmond, who immediately rose to his feet. His voice carried over the room as he addressed the guards.
"This is Warren Seth. He has been stationed in the Bay Shifter pack for years and is here to make his report."
A hush fell over the council hall as every eye turned to the shifter. The weight of expectation hung in the air as Seth swallowed audibly, his hands trembling at his sides before he finally spoke.
"I am Seth. I arrived in the Bay Shifter pack a year ago. I noticed early on that something was happening within the Colbat families, who hold seats in the Bay Shifter pack council. Sensing an opportunity, I aligned myself with their guards to gather information." He hesitated, shifting uneasily before continuing.
"Before I could learn the full extent of their plans, the Bay Shifter pack was thrown into chaos. A Lycan Shifter wolf awakened."
A pin-drop silence fell over the hall, every council member frozen in shock. Even Lord Marcel’s expression flickered with something unreadable.
Seth took a deep breath and pressed on. "I discovered that the Bay Shifter Alpha, Tor Gale, is the newly awakened Lycan."
Murmurs broke out across the room, but Seth wasn’t finished.
"Something has changed of late," he added, his voice now steadier. "Alpha Tor executed Elder Colbat, General Steel, and Commander Steel. He has also imprisoned the entire Colbat family. It appears he is... cleansing his ranks."
The hall erupted into an uproar. Voices overlapped in shock and anger, some demanding explanations, others whispering among themselves. Amidst the chaos, one statement cut through the noise, sharp and undeniable.
"And in all my time there, I never once saw Freyr Kayne in the Bay Shifter pack."
The words struck like a hammer against stone, reverberating through the chamber. I clenched my jaw, my eyes narrowing as I watched Lord Marcel’s reaction. He was still, calculating, his fingers gripping the armrest of his seat with barely concealed frustration. Nessa, Aurora, and Qadira shifted slightly behind me, their presence grounding me as the weight of the accusations began to tilt.
Seth had delivered his punchline with confidence, hoping to paint me as a traitor in front of the entire council. But instead of reacting with anger, I merely smirked, my gaze locking onto him like a predator sizing up its prey.
"Tell me, Seth," I drawled, tilting my head slightly, "have you ever met a relative of Beta Spark named Freya Gale?"
Seth hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Yes. I have seen the beautiful shifter woman. She was the center of a conflict between the Colbat family and Alpha Tor. But I heard that she defeated Fennel Cobalt and declared that he was not fit to be her mate. After that, she disappeared, some say she went to the mountains."
I chuckled darkly, shaking my head at his obliviousness. "Then one would have to be a fool not to see the resemblance," I said, my voice laced with amusement.
Before he could process my words, I let my power surge through me. Shadows curled around my frame, warping and shifting my form in the blink of an eye. Within seconds, I was no longer Freyr Kayne, I was Freya Gale.
Gasps echoed through the council hall. Seth’s face drained of color as his hand flew to his mouth. He staggered back, his legs giving out beneath him, and he collapsed onto the ground, landing on his ass with an audible thud.
The council chamber was a storm of whispers and murmurs. Every pair of eyes locked onto me with varying degrees of shock and disbelief. Even Lord Marcel, ever composed and unreadable, had risen from his seat, his normally calm expression betraying a flicker of astonishment.
I allowed the tension to hang in the air before I spoke again, this time in a perfectly projected feminine voice, my lips curling into a taunting smirk.
"How’s that for a disguise?"
The stunned silence that followed was worth every second.
