Chapter 76: TAKING THE TRASH OUT

{"Put trash in its place"}

SPARKS POV

Wave and I spent time in the royal jail after locking up Fennel, and the triplets, and even checking on Aqua. Out of the five, she was the only one who remained composed, her gaze cold and calculating. On the other hand, Fennel heaved and growled, thrashing against the iron bars as if sheer rage alone could set him free. It was almost comical watching him struggle, and Wave snickered beside me.

"Looks like we finally took the trash out," he muttered, arms crossed.

But none of it compared to what we had found earlier, my brother, Tor, in the hands of the triplets, tangled in their web. The image burned my mind, the shock still making my chest tighten. I wasn’t sure what would have happened if it hadn’t been for Freyr coming back to save him. I had never been more relieved in my life. Their love was undeniable and powerful, and for the first time, I understood what it meant to be mated.

My thoughts were interrupted by Flora’s voice. She walked over with that sharp, determined look in her eyes.

"I want to question one of the triplets," she announced. "I need to know where they got the Frakka poison."

Wave barely hesitated before pointing at Hali. "She’s the weakest of them."

Flora smirked, her eyes glinting with something dark. "Perfect."

She motioned to the guards, who opened the cell. Hali barely had time to scream before Flora grabbed her and dragged her out. The rest of us followed her to her office, where she shoved Hali to the floor.

The triplet sat on her hind legs; her lips pressed into a thin, stubborn line. Defiance flickered in her eyes, but Flora merely tilted her head, unimpressed.

"Are you going to talk, or should I use my beta powers to pull the truth out of you?" she asked coolly.

Hali didn’t answer, her jaw tightening.

Flora sighed dramatically, then crouched in front of her. "I have a better idea. Why don’t we cut off Dai and Dayra’s fingers, let them bleed for days, then call Ma to heal them—only to do it all over again until you confess?"

Hali gasped, her eyes widening in horror.

Flora only chuckled, her voice a low, cynical laugh. "Oh, don’t look so surprised. You think Elder Mercury would heal traitors?"

Hali swallowed hard; her resolve visibly cracking. The room was silent except for the sound of her shaky breathing. Now, we would get our answers.

Hali growled in anger, but I could sense the fear clouding her emotions, thick and undeniable. A smirk tugged at my lips as I strode over to one of the chairs in the room, sitting down with deliberate ease. I crossed one leg over the other, letting my smirk deepen.

"Oh, I like the latter better," I said, my voice smooth, watching her closely.

Wave didn’t hesitate. "Flora, go get the two sisters. Let’s proceed."

Flora nodded and turned to leave, but before she could take a step, Hali cracked. A whisper, barely audible at first.

"I’ll cooperate."

We stood in silence, waiting. I could hear her shallow and uneven breathing. Finally, she swallowed hard and spoke.

"It was Fennel," she admitted, her voice tight. "He acquired the Frakka flower and created the incense."

Wave and I exchanged a glance, but we remained quiet, letting her continue.

"But the idea," she added, her gaze dropping to the floor, "came from Aqua."

Wave stepped forward, his eyes narrowing. "What about the Bloodstone bugs?" His voice was sharp, demanding. "They’re only found in the Paradise Coven. How the hell did the Colbats get their hands on something from there? Our breeds are forbidden from interacting."

Hali groaned, frustration and resignation flickering across her face. She closed her eyes briefly, as if weighing her options, before snapping them open again.

"It was the Steel family," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "They were the first to bring the idea to the Colbat’s. But I don’t know the full details."

I clenched my jaw. "Then who does?"

Hali swallowed hard. "I only heard rumors... that the person behind this is hiding in the Sagstone Mountains." Her gaze darted between us, uneasy. "And... they’re colluding with someone from the Paradise Coven. Someone at Bloodstone Mountain."

I shot to my feet, my chair scraping loudly against the floor.

"What the hell?" I growled, fury igniting inside me. My hands curled into fists. This was bigger than I had thought. The Paradise Coven, the Colbat, the Steel family—how deep did this go?

"Keep talking," Wave pressed, his tone sharp and unrelenting.

Hali exhaled shakily before continuing.

"The Steel family convinced the Colbat that if Aqua married Alpha Tor, they would gain control over the Bay Shifter Pack. But there was someone else behind the scenes—someone calling the shots. I never saw them, never knew if it was a man or a woman, but they were the ones giving the orders."

She hesitated, then glanced up at us. "They explained that the Bloodstone bugs would take over the mind. But with Fennel... it was different."

Wave and I exchanged a glance, and I leaned forward. "Different how?"

Hali swallowed. "His wolf and the Bloodstone bugs... dissolved. The person behind this was thrilled. They said he was turning into a hybrid, someone who could challenge Tor if the transformation was completed. They saw it as part of the plan, but Fennel... was too greedy. Too impatient."

Flora’s voice cut through the silence. "What about Aqua?"

Hali snickered. "Aqua was way in over her head. Her wolf couldn’t handle the implant. She had nightmares. She was in pain. A lot of pain."

I stood, my body tense. "And why didn’t you and your sisters get implanted?"

Hali shuddered, looking away. "Our father, Marcus, refused. He wanted us clean. He was afraid we’d end up dead like the others. Before he left for the border, he made us swear—on our late mother’s name, that we would never touch the Bloodstone bugs."

Wave stepped forward; his eyes dark. "Then tell me this, how were the Bloodstone bugs transported from the Paradise Coven to Bay Shifter territory?"

Hali’s fingers curled into fists on her lap, and after a moment, she muttered, "It all happened in the Sagstone Mountains."

"Take us there tomorrow," Wave ordered, pointing at Hali with a cold stare. Then, his voice dropped to something even more dangerous. "And if you play any tricks along the way, I’ll take out your sisters. No mercy."

Hali flinched but quickly shook her head. "We should travel at night," she muttered. "The road to Sagstone Mountain is treacherous, and the beasts that roam there are vicious. The only person I’ve ever seen handle them is Fennel."

Wave chuckled darkly. "Fennel is a weakling who relied on bugs for power. That’s not handling anything, that’s cheating."

Hali snickered. "Tell that to the border guards. Even they fear the beasts. You’ll see for yourselves if you can handle them because we have to pass through their nest before we can even reach Sagstone Mountain."

I stood up, a smirk pulling at my lips. "You don’t need to worry about that." I tilted my head, letting my amusement show. "Sagstone Mountain belongs to the royal family. And those beasts?" I leaned in slightly, watching her expression shift. "They obey the Gale family."

Hali’s breath hitched, and for the first time, I saw a flicker of uncertainty in her eyes as he was hoping to either scare us with the beast or lead us to them and have them attack us.

"All the Colbats are treacherous, and you’re no exception," Flora spat as she dragged Hali out of the room.

Wave let out a breath and stepped beside me, placing a firm hand on my shoulder. "We need to brief Tor about Sagstone Mountain and plan our trip there," he said, his voice steady but edged with urgency. "Stopping the bloodstone bugs from reaching the Bay Shifter pack is paramount."

I nodded, feeling the weight of exhaustion settle over me. "It’s been a long day," I murmured, leaning in slightly until our foreheads pressed together. "I’m worn out... completely drained."

Wave’s grip on my shoulder tightened slightly before he pulled me into a warm embrace. His arms wrapped around me, strong and reassuring, as he rubbed slow, soothing circles on my back. The tension in my body eased just a little, the comfort of his presence grounding me in a way nothing else could.

When Flora returned, we bid her goodbye and finally headed home. By the time we arrived, exhaustion weighed heavily on us. Neither of us had the energy for anything elaborate, so we settled for a light meal before retreating to bed.

As soon as we lay down, I curled into Wave’s warmth, his arms wrapping around me in a way that made the world outside seem distant. He let out a content sigh, his breath tickling my skin as he whispered, "I’m glad we’re mated."

A soft smile tugged at my lips as I pulled him closer, letting the steady rhythm of his heartbeat lull me into sleep.
