Chapter 75: A THREAT AND A PROMISE
I walked beside Sierra, the enforcer guards trailing us as we made our way toward the border of the Kayne family estate. The night air was cool, and the tension from the council hall lingering behind us was still a shadow.
Just as we neared the entrance, a sudden commotion sounded from behind. My hand instinctively hovered near my weapon, but before I could react, two familiar figures emerged from the darkness, Amon Nessa and Aggrey Jade.
They both smiled at Sierra, then, to my surprise, bowed in greeting.
Sierra lifted her hands quickly, attempting to stop them. "There’s no need for that—"
"Greetings, my lady," they interrupted in unison, their voices unwavering.
I exhaled sharply. "What are you two doing?" I scolded, shaking my head.
Aggrey let out an awkward chuckle before speaking first. "Thank you, Lady Kayne, for standing up for my daughter." His voice was thick with emotion, and his usually firm demeanor softened. "You were firm and assertive, and for that, I am grateful."
He hesitated momentarily, his gaze dropping briefly before meeting Sierra’s again. "I tried reasoning with Lord Marcel, but my words fell on deaf ears. I watched my daughter deteriorate, powerless to do anything, until Nessa came to me with a promise. He said he had found a way to save her, but it would require the involvement of the Kayne family. If there is even the slightest chance to bring her back, then I will do whatever it takes. From this day forward, I vow to serve you, Lady Kayne, for as long as I live."
Amon Nessa nodded in agreement. "As do I."
The weight of their words hung heavy in the air. Sierra, who had been unwavering in the council hall, now seemed taken aback. She stared at them, speechless, as if only now realizing the full impact of her actions.
Sensing her hesitation, I stepped in. "We were just heading home," I said, glancing at them both. "If you truly want to help, then come with us. You should see Aurora and Nessa for yourselves."
Amon and Aggrey exchanged glances before nodding in unison. Without another word, we continued forward together, the night stretching before us, uncertain yet filled with unspoken resolve.
As we approached the Kayne estate, the door swung open before we could even reach it. Qadira rushed out; her expression tight with worry.
"Sierra!" she gasped, pulling her into a tight embrace. "I was so worried."
Sierra murmured something reassuring, but Qadira barely seemed to hear it. Her body suddenly tensed, and I followed her gaze, her eyes had locked onto Amon Nessa and Aggrey Jade standing behind us.
"Hi, Qadira," they both piped up, almost sheepishly.
Qadira pulled away from Sierra, a faint blush of embarrassment creeping onto her face as she gave them a stiff nod. Without another word, she turned on her heel and led us inside.
The moment we stepped in, my eyes landed on Aurora and Nessa standing by the large windows, their figures bathed in the soft glow of moonlight filtering through the glass. They turned at the sound of footsteps, their gazes sweeping over us,then, suddenly, they both gasped.
"Father!" Aurora breathed.
"Papa!" Nessa choked out.
Before anyone could say another word, the girls rushed forward, embracing their fathers in a tangle of arms and relieved sobs.
Sierra reached for my wrist, tugging me away from the reunion. Wordlessly, I followed as she led me to the library. She closed the door behind us, shutting out the muffled voices from the main hall. The room was dimly lit, the scent of aged parchment and ink filling the air. We stood near the large window, staring out at the quiet night.
I turned to her. "Sierra, what’s wrong?"
She let out a shaky breath, closing her eyes. That’s when I noticed it, her hands were trembling.
Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, she admitted, "I was so scared."
My eyes widened. Sierra Kayne, the fierce, unshakable woman who had stood tall before the council, was afraid.
She turned to me, and for the first time, I saw it. The color had drained from her face, her usual composed expression replaced with raw vulnerability.
She had been holding it in.
All of it. Before I could think, I reached for her, pulling her into an embrace. Her body pressed against mine, her warmth sinking into me as her breathing steadied. And in that moment, everything I had ever dreamed about rushed to the surface, her scent, her body, even the tantalizing whisper of her blood beneath her skin. I clenched my jaw, fighting the hunger curling in my chest.
But right now, this wasn’t about desire. This was about holding her together when she needed it most. So, I tightened my arms around her and let her lean into me, both of us standing in silence as the night stretched on.
"Thank you, Dante. I wouldn’t have done this without you."
Sierra’s whisper was barely audible, but I felt it, felt the tremor in her voice, the way she sniffed, holding back tears.
I tightened my hold on her, my voice a quiet vow. "I will protect you and your family for as long as I’m alive."
She lifted her head, and our eyes clashed.
Desire.
Raw and unmistakable, burning in the depths of her gaze.
My breath hitched, and for a fleeting second, the world narrowed to just us. The warmth of her body, the scent of her skin, the way she looked at me like I was something more than a soldier bound by duty.
But reality slammed into me like a cold wave.
She was my best friend’s wife.
Guilt wrapped around my throat, suffocating. I took a step back, putting distance between us.
Her expression darkened, brows furrowed, lips pressed into a thin line.
"How long do I have to wait for you, Dante?" she asked.
A sharp ringing filled my ears. My pulse pounded in my temples as I stared at her, trying to grasp the weight of her words.
"What?" I whispered.
She huffed, eyes flashing with something fierce, something final.
"You better make up your mind," she murmured, voice as sharp as a blade. "Or else you will never have me."
Then she turned and walked out of the library, her words lingering in the air like both a threat and a promise. And I stood there, frozen, unsure whether I was ready for her or I would lose her for good.
I stood in the library, lost in thought, Sierra’s words echoing in my mind.
That was how Qadira found me, standing there, staring at nothing.
She stepped inside, arms crossed, a knowing smirk tugging at her lips. "Don’t tell me you fought with Ma. She seemed pissed off."
I huffed in frustration, rubbing a hand down my face. "I disappointed her."
Qadira chuckled, shaking her head. "You two have been dancing around each other for too long. It’s time to stop it." Her tone was light, but there was an edge to it, a weight behind her words. "Ma already made enemies out of Lord Marcel by exposing him about the Bloodstone Bugs, and she’s got Cassius seething for calling him out on what he did to Aurora Jade. There’s no turning back now."
I nodded, exhaling sharply. "I know. I’ll make it right."
She stepped closer and, without hesitation, wrapped her arms around me.
The unexpected warmth of her embrace pulled a chuckle from me as my hands instinctively went around her.
"It’s been lonely," she murmured against my chest, "and I hope I can call you Dad soon."
A deep, unexpected laugh rumbled from me, and I pulled back to look at her, amusement flickering in my eyes. I pointed at her with a teasing smirk. "You and Kayne are the same."
She grinned, her eyes twinkling. "That’s because we’re family."
Qadira and I left the library, stepping into the living room.
Sierra stood by the balcony windows, her arms folded tightly against her chest, her gaze distant yet sharp. Nessa and Aurora sat close together on the couch, flanked by Amon and Aggrey, their expressions guarded.
I walked past them and positioned myself beside Sierra, ignoring the accusatory look she shot my way.
Instead, I exhaled and spoke, my voice steady. "It’s time to bring Amon and Aggrey into the picture."
With that, I launched into the full story.
I told them everything, how Lord Marcel had tasked Kayne with infiltrating the Bay Shifter Pack, how we saved Aurora, our journey to Bloodstone Mountain and the horrifying discoveries there, Kayne’s unexpected encounter with the Lycan on Hanka Island, and his fated bond with Alpha Tor Gale. Then, the attack on the Kayne estate.
By the time I finished, the room was thick with tension. Amon’s fists clenched at his sides; his jaw taut. Aggrey’s eyes burned with barely restrained fury. Nessa and Aurora sat rigid, their breaths shallow, their faces set in grim determination.
Sierra finally turned to face me, her expression unreadable before she spoke, her voice cold and calculated. "This all connects to Dunco Kayne’s death."
A beat of silence.
Then she continued. "There’s no doubt. Whoever is behind this, implanting Bloodstone Bugs in Paradise Coven and the Bay Shifter Pack had a hand in his murder. The last day that Dunco came home, he had a scent of the Bay Shifters and I suspect he had found out about the bloodstone bugs and must have found out the plan and that is why they killed him. Freyr will be back soon and from his findings we shall know what they are doing and then we shall bring them down."
"Agreed "Everyone in the room responded.
