Chapter 55: DECLARATION
{"To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides"}
Standing in the army barracks, I found the generals gathered, their voices thick with gossip. One thumped his chest proudly, boasting, "Did you hear? Alpha Tor argued with Elder Cobalt, urging like never before. And get this, he even locked up Aqua and Commander Steel!"
"So what?" My voice cut through the chatter like a blade. The moment I spoke, a hush fell over the room.
A surge of power rolled through me as Spark, my wolf, rose within, pushing out the full force of my Beta aura. The weight of it sent a ripple of tension across the gathered generals. Their expressions shifted to shock, unease, and even a flicker of fear.
Wave, standing at my side, let out a low chuckle. "Well, that got their attention, "he muttered through the mind link.
My eyes burned as I swept my gaze across the room, counting twenty generals. "Twenty against one?" Spark snarled in my mind, his energy coiling, ready to strike. "We can take them."
But something was off. Wave’s voice pushed through the link again, his tone sharp. "Something’s wrong with their mind links. I can feel it—corruption. The vampire bugs."
That was all I needed to hear. My stance shifted, muscles tensing as I prepared for whatever came next. "If they were infected, then they weren’t just enemies. They were already lost."
"I’ll say this once." My voice rang through the barracks, heavy with authority. "Tomorrow morning, at the training grounds, be there as early as dawn. Those who don’t show up? I’ll take it as rebellion and let Alpha Tor handle you himself."
I didn’t wait for a response. Grabbing Wave’s wrist, I turned to leave, but before I could take a step, one of the generals spoke up, his voice laced with unease.
"I heard... Alpha Tor hasn’t been seen since yesterday. The Generals are wondering where went and are concerned for the pack. There is no information about his whereabouts and this is unsettling "
I froze mid-step. Slowly, I turned back, my gaze locking onto the man who had spoken. The tension in the room thickened like a storm cloud.
"Who told you that?" My voice was low, dangerous.
Silence. Not a single soul dared to speak. Wave’s chuckle broke through the tension, but there was no humor in it. "Did any of you bother asking Deputy General Tiger where Alpha Tor is?" His words carried weight, but his eyes never left General Steel. He was staring at him, too intently, too knowingly.
And then it clicked. Steel. My wolf snarled within me, a feral growl vibrating through my chest. It was him. He had compromised the other generals, dragging Blossom and Lily into whatever treachery he was weaving. I stepped forward, and just like that, their silence became submission. They would obey. They always did. Tomorrow at the training ground, they’d face something different. Something they wouldn’t expect.
We left the army barracks, but to my surprise, General Steel, Blossom, and Sky trailed behind us.
Wave’s jaw clenched, his teeth grinding audibly. His frustration pulsed through the mind link. "They’re following us."
Before we reached the pack office, he spun around abruptly, eyes sharp. "Why are you tailing us?"
The three of them froze, their expressions shifting between shock and confusion. They mumbled almost in unison, "We’re headed to the office."
Without another word, they hurried past us, their movements stiff, too rehearsed. The way they rushed inside only fueled my suspicions. I huffed, shaking my head. Not today.
Grabbing Wave’s arm, I pulled him away from the office and toward Bay Shifter Jail. The air felt heavier as we neared, tension thick in my gut. Outside the main office, Flora sat in the middle of a meeting with the commanders. As soon as she spotted us, she stood, her posture respectful but alert. The commanders followed suit, nodding in acknowledgment.
"Greetings, Beta Spark." I gave a curt nod as Flora dismissed them. The room emptied, leaving only the three of us.
Wave wasted no time and dove right in. "What news do you have for us?" His voice was sharp, edged with impatience.
Flora’s expression darkened. "Something’s not right," she murmured, her gaze flicking between us. "And I think I finally have proof."
Flora’s expression was grim as she spoke. "It’s the Steel family." Her words landed like a hammer blow. "They’re the ones behind the vampire bug. They’ve been planting it, compromising our people."
A low growl rumbled in my chest. Wave’s fists clenched at his sides.
"How?" I demanded.
Flora exhaled sharply. "They found a way to bring it in. One of the commanders confessed to me, that he said the Steels have a secret hideout near the border of Bay Shifter Pack and Paradise Vampire Coven."
A tense silence filled the room. If that was true, then the infection wasn’t random—it was planned, deliberate.
"If this is the case," I said, exchanging a glance with Wave, "then the commanders should join the generals in training tomorrow. While they’re distracted, it gives you time to infiltrate the hideout and find out what they’re hiding."
Flora nodded. "Agreed. But I’m still waiting for Alpha Tor and Tiger to return. There are already unsettling rumors spreading through the pack people are whispering that something is wrong with Alpha Tor, and that’s why he’s missing." She paused; her gaze sharp. "Of course, we know where he is."
Wave let out a slow breath before confessing, "There’s something off about the generals. I can feel it. Their mind links are tainted."
I nodded. "That vampire bug has spread further than we thought."
The weight of the situation pressed down on me, but one question still burned in my mind. "And Aqua? How is she holding up?"
Flora’s jaw tightened. "Not well. The prison rails are lined with poisonous Asími. Every time she tries to break out, it burns her. She’s been screaming in pain."
My wolf, Spark, roared in fury within me. I clenched my fists, trying to suppress the violent urge to tear those prison walls down myself.
"Then we move fast," I said, voice like steel. "Because if the Steels think they can break us from the inside, they have no idea what’s coming for them."
"How is Elder Cobalt involved in all of this?" Wave asked, his voice edged with suspicion.
Flora didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she walked over to the window, gazing outside as if searching for the right words. "No one speaks about him," she finally said, her tone low. "It’s unsettling. Everyone goes silent at the mention of his name. It’s as if they’re afraid—even when it comes to Aqua."
That only made my wolf more restless. Fear like that didn’t come from nowhere.
Wave’s eyes darkened with thought before he turned back to Flora. "What about your Ma? She has the power of sight, she can read minds. If she helps, we might finally uncover whatever Cobalt is hiding."
Flora nodded, her expression firm. "I’ll have dinner with her tonight and ask. But you two," she glanced between us, a small smirk tugging at her lips, "since you’re mated, you’ll need to visit her soon."
I felt a rush of heat crawl up my neck, a blush rising before I could stop it. I nodded quickly, hoping they wouldn’t notice.
Wave, of course, did. With a chuckle, he walked over and placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Don’t worry," he murmured, his voice warm. "My mother will adore you."
I huffed, trying to shake off my embarrassment, but the corner of my lips twitched. "I hope so"
Flora laughed softly. "She will. It’s been a long time coming and this will make her happy."
We left the jail cell behind, walking side by side through the dimly lit streets. The market was still alive with late-night shoppers, the scent of roasted meat and fresh bread filling the air. As we stopped to buy some food, a thought slipped into my mind, and before I could second-guess it, I voiced it out loud.
"Wave, do you want to move in with me? I would be more at ease if we lived together. Now that we are mated we can keep each other company and build our lives together. "
His steps faltered. I felt his gaze snap to me, and when I turned, our eyes clashed—his, filled with surprise, mine, steady. Then, his lips curved into that smile that always made my chest tighten.
"I’d love to," he admitted, his voice warm. "But first, let us deal with my mother. After that, we can plan to move over the weekend."
I grinned at him, nudging his side playfully. "Good choice. My house is far from everyone—and, more importantly, soundproof."
Wave’s laughter burst out of him, deep and rich, shaking his shoulders as he threw his head back. The sound sent warmth straight through me, like a light sensation rippling over my body. When he finally quieted down, he leaned in, his breath brushing against my skin as he pressed a slow, teasing kiss just below my ear. A shiver ran down my spine.
"You do realize," he murmured, his voice low and amused, "that between the two of us, you’re the loudest one?"
Heat rushed up my neck. I swatted at his chest, but my smile betrayed me. "Shut up, Wave."
His grin widened. "Never."
