Chapter 45: WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO?
"I had to do it to protect her. "I responded to Ma, even though I knew he was unhappy about it. She walked over and stood before me, arms crossed, her expression tight with disapproval.
"You’ve invited trouble," she stated, her voice edged with frustration. "And it’s going to be hard to deal with."
I nodded, accepting the truth in her words. Then, without hesitation, I confessed, "This has everything to do with me. There’s no way I could ignore the fact that Aurora is being tortured because of me."
Ma huffed, clearly unimpressed. "And what’s your next move?" she asked, tilting her head slightly.
I shook my head. "Aurora’s safety comes first. I’ll deal with Cassius and his goons later."
A smirk flickered across Ma’s lips, but there was no amusement in her eyes. "That’s the least of your worries," she said. "Once Alpha Tor gets wind of this, he’ll be far more troublesome for you."
Her words rang true, settling in my chest like a heavyweight. Tor would not take kindly to the decision I had made in a rush. And I knew—eventually—I would have to face the consequences.
With that, she left me alone, lost in the solace of my thoughts. I had no choice but to curse at myself for it.
Moments later, Elder Dante returned, his expression dark with frustration. I could tell instantly that he was not pleased with whoever had followed us.
"Who was it?" I demanded.
Through gritted teeth, he answered, "Tio and Desmond."
He went on to explain that he had caught them lurking near the forest entrance of the Kayne mansion and ordered them to turn back. But they had argued, refusing to listen—until Cassius arrived. Only then, upon seeing the gravity of the situation, did they begrudgingly agree to leave. Even so, Dante was certain they would not back down so easily. He sensed they would continue to interfere, making things even more difficult for us. I clenched my jaw, knowing he was right. I had kept my distance from coven affairs for too long, but that time had come to an end.
I knew that Lord Marcel would never let me go. Now that Aurora was out of Cassius’s grasp, he would do everything in his power to provoke and irritate me. I needed to find a way to keep him out of my business.
"I need a way to keep him off my back," I told Elder Dante.
"It’s going to be impossible," he responded, his tone firm. "I suggest you leave for the Bay Shifter Pack and let us handle him. Your mother won’t let him near Aurora, and Nessa or Qadira will keep a close watch on them."
I nodded, acknowledging his words. We stood in silence by the window, watching as the first rays of dawn stretched across the Kayne lands.
"How safe are you?" I asked, knowing full well that Lord Marcel would summon him before long.
Dante chuckled. "Pa is my best friend. If Marcel calls for me, I will respond. But I made a vow to protect all of you, and I see no reason to back down just because Cassius is being unreasonable."
A light chuckle escaped my lips. "Now’s your chance," I whispered. "You’ve been circling an idea—we talked about this before. It is good that you are around Ma. Maybe now you can finally pursue her."
He cursed at me, but I only laughed, the sound bubbling out of me.
Qadira walked back into the living room, and we both turned to face her. Her expression was serious as she delivered the news.
"Aurora is awake," she informed us. "Ma has declared that she’s safe, but it will take months for her to recover. It would be best if she stayed here under close watch."
We both nodded in agreement. Then, stepping closer, Qadira lowered her voice. "She’s lucky to have someone like Nessa who loves her," she whispered. "Otherwise, she wouldn’t have survived all the torture Cassius inflicted on her. Her mind is in turmoil, she needs time, patience, and love to heal."
I nodded, understanding the weight of her words.
Turning to Elder Dante, Qadira asked, "What exactly were Cassius and his goons doing?"
Dante shook his head, his expression grim. "This is the first time I’ve heard of the bloodstone bug being implanted in vampires," he admitted. "I knew it existed in the Blood Mountain, the source that feeds all the vampires of the Paradise Coven. But I’ve only ever heard of the bug being found in the magic chambers of Aima—a secret chamber guarded by each Lord of the Coven."
His eyes darkened with realization. "If the bug is being used for mind control, Lord Marcel knows about it. More than that he is the one behind it. Which means..." He trailed off, his gaze hardening.
"The target is much bigger," I finished for him. "They are aiming for a bigger number. "
Dante nodded. "And I can only guess that he wants to control the Shifter Wolves of Paradise Bay Coven."
"Would the bug work on them?" Qadira asked, her voice laced with concern.
Before Elder Dante could respond, Ma appeared in the doorway, her expression grave. "The bloodstone bug would work on anyone with a shifter beast," she stated. "That’s why Lord Marcel is cruel enough to experiment with it. If he’s already using it on the people of Paradise Coven, then there’s a high chance he has already sneaked it into the Bay Shifter Pack without anyone noticing."
A heavy silence filled the room as her words sank in.
Ma continued; her tone unwavering. "The bloodstone bug drains one’s mind link, making it easy to control the person even turning them into spies to uncover secrets." She exhaled sharply, her gaze flickering toward me. "Thank the gods Aurora has a strong mind link. She comes from the Jade family, known for their gift of guarding secrets. If not for that, the bloodstone bug would have completely consumed her, and she’d be under Cassius’s control by now."
How could they do this right under our noses? How dare they?" Elder Dante seethed, his fists clenching at his sides. Then, suddenly, his eyes widened in realization. He turned sharply to Ma, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Could this be what killed Duncan?"
Ma staggered back, her face pale with shock. Qadira rushed forward, steadying her before she could fall. My anger surged like a storm, my vision darkening with rage.
"If the bloodstone bug was implanted in him," Elder Dante continued, his voice grim, "then it would have drained him slowly. He died fighting something he had no idea about."
"What the hell?" I muttered, barely able to contain my fury. Stepping closer, I placed a firm hand on Elder Dante’s shoulder. "Is that even possible?"
For a long moment, his gaze remained fixed on the empty air, as if he were piecing together a puzzle too horrifying to comprehend. Then, slowly, he turned back to me.
"It’s possible," he admitted. "Your Pa had no physical injuries when he died."
The weight of his words sent a chill down my spine. If this was true, then Pa had been murdered in a way none of us had seen coming. And if Lord Marcel were behind it, he would pay.
"How do we confirm it?" Ma whispered; her gaze locked on Elder Dante.
He met her eyes for a long moment before responding. "I’ll have to go to Aima—the secret chamber in Bloodstone Mountain and find out what the hell is going on."
"That’s a dangerous move," Ma argued, shaking her head. "We already lost Duncan, and I am not ready to lose anyone else."
Elder Dante remained firm. "It’s the only way to know for sure or else we would be sitting ducks without a clue as to what they did or what is going on.
I nodded in agreement, though I noticed the way Ma’s lips pressed into a thin line. She huffed in frustration, and I knew whether she admitted it or not that she cared for Elder Dante more than she let on.
"How long will it take?" Ma asked." To get to the Bloodstone Mountain, in and out without being noticed.
"A day," Elder Dante answered. "The weekend would be best. That’s when Lord Marcel lets his guard down and doesn’t station as many guards at Bloodstone Mountain."
We fell into deep thought, the weight of the plan settling over us. Then, from the doorway, Nessa’s voice cut through the silence.
"The weekends are a trap," she said, stepping into the room. We all turned toward her as she walked closer. "That’s exactly why Lord Marcel keeps only a few guards visible while the rest remain hidden, watching from the shadows," she continued. "Tomorrow night is the only safe window."
Elder Dante frowned. "Why tomorrow night?"
"Because that’s when Lord Marcel will be at Bloodstone Mountain, feeding and nourishing his body," Nessa explained. "That means fewer guards and the perfect time to get into Aima and out without a hitch."
"Take me with you "I turned to Elder Dante. "I would be able to offer you cover and be on standby if anything happens.
"NO" Both Nessa, Ma, and Qadira spoke up.
