Chapter 41: HIDDEN SPIES
{"O divine art of subtlety and secrecy!"}
Deputy General Tiger’s voice cut through the tension in the room, firm and resolute. "I’ll send my best guards and men to shadow you."
I shook my head, barely acknowledging his suggestion. "If you send your enforcers, General Steel is bound to find out." I leaned forward, my gaze fixed on Tiger. "He is already keeping a close watch on Alpha Tor and me. He is suspicious, trying to figure out what we are planning or if we are watching Elder Colbat or Aqua too closely."
The words weighed heavily, a gnawing certainty rising in me. "And I have a feeling there are more spies like Rowan—families taken hostage, forced into submission with that vampire mind-controlling bug." My hands clenched the thought of those forced bonds stirring a deep, simmering anger in me. "We need to root out the traitors—everyone in the army, and especially the enforcer guards."
General Tiger gave a curt nod, his expression grim.
I took a breath, pushing the frustration back and refocusing. "The annual vetting is coming up," I said, my voice steady as I laid out the plan. "This would be the perfect opportunity for Alpha Tor to meet with all the enforcer guards and military soldiers stationed in the barracks. He will be able to spot the rogue ones, flash them out, and expose them for what they are."
The plan formed in my mind like a perfect puzzle, one that would force General Steel into a quagmire. If we played our cards right, he would not see it coming.
"We are leaving," Flora announced, her voice firm but warm as she bid us farewell. General Tiger followed suit with a nod of his own. The door clicked shut behind them, and the air in the room shifted instantly, charged with an electric tension that crackled between Wave and me.
I kept my back to him, pretending to put the cups and plates away, my hands moving mechanically while my mind raced. I could hear his light chuckle from across the room, and it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
"What’s funny?" I asked, my voice steady but laced with frustration.
"You are not the shy type, Spark. Why are you holding back?" Wave’s words, casual as they seemed, sent a shockwave through me.
I did not need Spark to tell me what was coming next. The roar in my chest surged, low and possessive, a warning I could feel through every inch of my body. Without thinking, I moved with a speed I did not even know I had, pushing Wave against the wall with a force that made the room shake.
My hands were on his neck, pinning him in place, but not in aggression, no, in submission. I leaned close, my breath hot against his ear as I whispered, my voice dark and low, "If you keep pushing me like this, you’ll end up wrecked."
Wave did not flinch. Instead, he bared his neck to me, a silent challenge, a claim, and whispered back with a sense of impatience that matched the fire raging inside me, "I hate waiting. Bite and Mark me to get it over with."
My heart hammered in my chest, the need for him a burning thing that made everything else in the world fade away. I could feel the weight of his words settle between us like a truth neither of us could deny.
I pressed a soft kiss to his neck, my lips brushing over his skin as I whispered, my voice thick with emotion, "I want to make our first union special."
A low rumble vibrated in his chest, followed by an angry response that made the tension in the room even thicker. "How the hell should I do that?" Wave’s words came out sharp, frustration and desire bleeding through his tone.
I turned to face him, and the moment our eyes locked, I saw it—his wolf was rising, the golden hue in his irises burning with intensity. I could feel his emotions swirling around us, the rejection that had been eating at him all along.
"I’m not rejecting you, pup," I said softly, my voice steady, trying to calm the storm that churned inside him. "I want you. No mistake about it." I reached up, placing a hand on his chest as I leaned in, close enough to feel the heat radiating off his body. "But our mating... it must be special. I want you to remember it for a lifetime. Our first love. Our first bite. I want to make you mine... and savor this feeling, the feeling of our union."
Wave’s mouth hung open at my words, his breathing shallow as his throat bobbed with a hard swallow. The heat of his gaze burned into me, and then, as if the weight of my words had hit him all at once, he spoke, his voice low and filled with barely contained need.
"I have no idea how I’m going to hold back every time I go near you," he said, his voice strained. "My wolf... Bolt... he wants to sink his teeth into you and howl."
The raw hunger in his voice made my pulse race. I leaned up, pressing a soft kiss to his Adam’s apple, and he moaned, soft, desperate and I could feel the way his body trembled beneath my touch. His arms instinctively circled me, pulling me closer, his body pressing against mine as the need between us ignited.
"How about we deal with the three, and when we get back, I promise to do as you wish." I glanced up at Wave, my heart still pounding from our earlier tension. He smiled, that spark of mischief returning to his eyes, and nodded in agreement.
An hour later, we left my home. We stopped by the enforcer’s offices first, pretending to be busy with work as we listened in on the enforcers’ conversations, hoping to catch anything that could give us a lead. Half an hour passed, and nothing came of it. We left the office, making it seem like we were going for a run, and then headed towards the forest where Flora had said General Steel would be meeting.
We moved a good distance away, finding a spot where we could keep watch without being noticed. I tapped into my Beta wolf’s power, focusing on masking our scent, blending into the environment as if we were part of the trees themselves.
Time dragged on. Two hours later, and still no sign of General Steel. My patience was wearing thin, and just when I thought it was time to give up, a figure emerged from the shadows of the forest.
Commander Haze Steel, his posture rigid, paced around in tight circles, scanning the area. After a moment, he seemed satisfied, nodding toward the dense trees ahead of him. That is when I saw him, despite the low light of dusk, the vampire stood tall, dressed in red robes, the hood obscuring most of his face, but his white hair shone like a beacon in the fading light.
Haze’s voice, dripping with sarcasm, broke the silence. "Desmond," he called out.
The vampire hissed; his voice filled with cold disdain. "There’s no need to address me by my name." He looked at Haze, his eyes glinting with malice. "I have news for you."
Haze straightened, listening intently as the vampire spoke. "It seems Freyr Kane has already seen Alpha Tor."
Haze’s response was cold, almost indifferent. "The plan is still to send Freyr to Bay Shifter. He will die a horrible death, and that will trigger the war."
Desmond nodded, his lips curling into a twisted smile. "And any setbacks with the army?"
Haze’s answer was laced with certainty, his tone like a final, sealed promise. "No setbacks. It is easy. The top commanders are already implanted with the bloodstone bug, as planned. If a war breaks out, Bay Shifter will be left unprotected. Alpha Tor will have no choice but to surrender to Lord Marcel."
I felt a sickening realization twist in my gut. The pieces were falling into place, but none of it was good news. I turned to Wave, my hand clenched into a fist, the weight of the situation sinking in.
After Commander Haze left, Wave and I remained rooted to the spot, our minds racing as the words that we had overheard settled. The realization hit me hard: we had stumbled onto an evil plan; one being orchestrated by members of the Paradise Coven and the Bay Shifter pack. My jaw clenched, the weight of their betrayal pressing down on me like a heavy stone.
"Who the hell do they think they are?" I cursed out, my voice low but seething with anger. I could feel the fury bubbling up inside me, the wolf in me growling in response to the injustice of it all. My fists balled at my sides, and I gritted my teeth, the taste of blood almost sharp in my mouth.
"How dare they plot against us?" I muttered, barely able to keep the rage from spilling out in every word. My heart was pounding, every fiber of my being screaming for action. I wanted to tear through the forest, find Haze, and make him pay for his treachery, but I knew I had to think and strategize. There was no room for impulsive moves now.
Wave stood beside me, his presence a steadying force, though I could see the fire in his eyes, too. I could feel his anger radiating, but he remained quiet, giving me space to process.
