Chapter 38: THE VAMPIRE MIND CONTROL
{"The greatest force is derived from the power of the mind"}
I was left alone in the dimly lit room, the silence stretching thick around me. Then, much to my surprise, the door creaked open, and Nessa stepped inside, a bottle of whiskey in one hand and two glasses in the other. Her smile was small, forced as if held in place by something unseen.
"I was instructed by Lord Marcel to bring you a drink," she said, her voice steady but lacking warmth.
I stared at her, feeling the fear rolling off her in waves. It clung to her like a second skin. She had been pushed, even threatened, to come here. I could see it in the stiffness of her posture, in the way her fingers gripped the bottle just a little too tightly.
I gave a slow nod and gestured toward the table in the center of the room, silently instructing her to set the drink down and leave. She hesitated for a moment, her throat bobbing in a nervous swallow, then finally obeyed. I watched as she moved, her body rigid with tension. Setting the glasses down, she unscrewed the whiskey bottle, pouring the amber liquid into both.
Then, instead of retreating, she picked up the glasses and walked toward me. My gaze darkened as she handed me one, and I did not reach for it immediately. I studied her, every flicker of emotion crossing her face, every small movement. She was braver than she looked, standing before me despite the fear curling in her breath.
Inside me, Kayne stirred. My beast watched her with quiet, unreadable intensity, on edge, ready. Then, she spoke. "Freyr, can we be friends?" Her voice was soft and uncertain, yet carrying something beneath it, hope, or desperation. I tilted my head, swirling the whiskey in my glass but not drinking. Kayne growled low in my mind, wary, skeptical.
Friends? I met her gaze, unblinking, waiting. Would she flinch? Would she stand her ground?
I took a slow sip of the whiskey, letting the burn settle in my throat before speaking.
"Why would you want to be friends with a loner like me?" I drawled, watching her over the rim of my glass.
Nessa smiled—not out of amusement, but with quiet determination. "Because I need someone who can protect Aurora," she said simply. "And right now, you’re the only one who can."
My eyes narrowed at her words. "What do you mean?"
She hesitated, then walked toward the window, pressing her palm against the cold glass as she stared outside. Her voice dropped to a whisper. "Because I’m afraid that soon... Aurora will be dead."
A dark snicker escaped me. "And why exactly would that bother me?"
Nessa turned to face me then, her expression unguarded, raw. "Because Aurora has been tasked with becoming your life partner, but Cassius... he isn’t making it easy for her." She exhaled sharply, gripping the windowsill. "I love Aurora. I do not want to see her hurt, Freyr. And if you don’t do something, she won’t survive this."
I raised an eyebrow, studying her closely. The sincerity in her words was unmistakable, woven into every syllable, every breath. There was no deception here, no hidden ploy.
For a long moment, I said nothing. Then, slowly, I set my empty glass down. "What do you need me to do?"
She lifted her drink to her lips, taking a measured sip before meeting my gaze. "Are you ready to listen to my suggestion?"
I did not answer immediately. Instead, I grabbed the bottle, pouring myself another glass, the rich amber liquid filling the silence between us. Then, without breaking eye contact, I downed it in one smooth motion.
"Go on," I said, my voice steady.
Nessa placed her glass on the table, turning to me with a look of quiet resolve. "You need to declare to the Paradise Coven that you want to date Aurora Jade."
I let out a dry chuckle, laced with sarcasm. "What? And why would I do that?"
Nessa did not flinch. She met my gaze, unwavering. "Because if you don’t, the mind-control powers Cassius placed in Aurora will kill her." My smirk faded. Nessa took a step closer, lowering her voice. "She gets weaker by the day, Freyr. Not even the Bloodstone’s blood is curing her thirst anymore."
I stared at her, stunned. Aurora had been suffering all this time. And all because Lord Marcel wanted to force me into taking a lifetime mate?
My fingers tightened around the whiskey glass before I set it down with a sharp clink. Without thinking, I closed the distance between us. "What the hell are you talking about, Nessa?"
She turned slowly to face me, her eyes haunted. Then, in a quiet voice, she confessed, "Paradise Coven is a hellhole, Freyr. It’s nearly impossible to survive." She swallowed hard, then continued, "They planted a controlling vampire bug from the Bloodstone Mountain—where the blood is harvested to sustain the vampires. That is how they control anyone who dares to oppose their plans. They’ve even used it on the spies they sent to the Bay Shifter Pack."
A cold fury uncoiled inside me. My beast, Kayne, stirred with a growl, restless with anger. But Nessa wasn’t done. Her voice trembled slightly, but her words hit like a blade to the chest. "Aurora never wanted to be your life mate, Freyr. She told them that."
My breath stilled.
"And for that," Nessa whispered, "Cassius beat the shit out of her. Lord Marcel and his brothers stood there and watched."
Something inside me snapped.
"She barely survived, Freyr," Nessa pressed. "And now, you’re the only one who can save her."
The weight of her words settled over me like a storm cloud, thick with rage and something else I did not want to name. My fingers curled into fists at my sides, my pulse pounding like a war drum.
I huffed in frustration, rubbing a hand over my face. "Where is she?" I demanded.
Nessa lifted her chin and pointed toward the door. "She’s just outside," she said. "Waiting for me to finish talking to you."
A bitter laugh escaped me. Of course, she was. Lord Marcel was playing a sick game, trying to control me—and the key to that control was Aurora.
"This is a bad idea," I muttered, shaking my head. "Lord Marcel isn’t stupid. He’ll never believe I changed my mind so easily."
"I know," Nessa admitted. "But if you take Aurora with you on your mission, it’ll keep her away from Marcel and Cassius. At least for now." She took a step closer. "Freyr, you’re the only one with enough power to remove the Bloodstone bug from her mind link. If you don’t help her... she won’t survive this."
I clenched my jaw, but before I could respond, the door to the private room creaked open.
Aurora stepped inside. The moment I saw her, a sharp pang of something unrecognizable twisted in my chest. She looked... drained. Her usually fierce gaze was dulled, her posture tense, her movements sluggish. She closed the door behind her, then walked over to Nessa, keeping a deliberate distance from me.
She barely glanced my way before whispering, "Cassius is already looking for me. I needed to get away from him."
Nessa nodded in understanding, then turned back to me, her voice barely above a breath. "You need to see for yourself, Freyr. See what the Bloodstone bug has done to her."
I exhaled sharply and pushed my power outward, letting Kayne rise within me. My beast stirred, his energy merging with the Bloodstone within me as I focused on Aurora’s mind link.
The moment I connected to her mind link, my entire body tensed. Dark magic pulsed through her mind like poison, thick and consuming. The Bloodstone bug had latched onto her essence, feeding off her, draining her. Her beast her very soul was fading. Dying. My hands curled into fists at my sides as I withdrew, my power snapping back into place.
"What the hell," I cursed under my breath. My heart pounded with barely restrained rage.
"Freyr, I beseech you," Nessa pressed, her voice cracking under the weight of desperation. Her lower lip trembled; her fear palpable. Before I could respond, the door to the private room swung open.
Cassius strode in first, his smirk dripping with arrogance, followed closely by Tio, Idris, and Desmond, all wearing matching expressions of smug amusement.
I barely shifted as I leaned against the wall, my arms crossed, observing the way Cassius’s eyes darted between me and Aurora. His smirk widened as if he had already won some twisted game, I was not aware I was playing.
Tio stepped forward, his gaze sweeping over the scene. "Is this a private party," he mused, "or can anyone join?"
Nessa instinctively moved closer to me, her fingers tightening around Aurora’s wrist, pulling her protectively against her side.
Cassius hissed. Aurora flinched, her entire body trembling like a leaf caught in a storm.
Something dark and vicious uncoiled inside me. It was my beast, Kayne, or it was just me but whatever it was, it made me speak before I even processed the words.
Keeping my gaze locked on Aurora, I asked, "Would you like to join me for a drink at my house?"
The silence that followed was suffocating. I felt it. The shock. The disbelief. The anger radiated from every corner of the room like a rising tide. Cassius inhaled sharply, his jaw tightening, before he exhaled a single, venomous whisper.
"What the fuck?"
