Chapter 32: YOU ARE CRAZY, ALPHA TOR
{"This is a fairy tale with teeth and claws."}
The late afternoon sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows over the training ground. My muscles burned with exertion, and sweat dripped from every pore as I delivered blow after blow to the padded target. Each strike was an outlet for the storm brewing inside me, anger, frustration, and something deeper I did not want to name.
Wave and Spark arrived quietly, their presence at the edge of the training ground a sharp contrast to my furious movements. They did not interrupt, they just watched from a respectful distance as I threw punch after punch, my breaths coming in ragged gasps.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, and an hour after they had arrived, I stepped back, hands on my knees, panting heavily. Exhaustion was a strange kind of relief.
They greeted me in unison. "Alpha Tor"
I glanced at them, grabbing the towel hanging nearby and wiping the sweat from my face. Spark, always the more curious of the two, spoke first. "What’s ailing you, Alpha?"
I huffed, still catching my breath. "We need to talk in private," I said firmly, my tone leaving no room for questions. "Send Deputy General Tiger to my office. I have news to share and a private matter to discuss."
Their expressions shifted to surprise, but neither pressed me for details. Instead, they nodded in silent agreement.
"Of course, Alpha," Wave replied, his tone even.
I nodded curtly, slung the towel over my shoulder, and headed toward the office. The cool air inside was a welcome reprieve from the heat of the training ground.
Stripping off my sweat-soaked clothes, I stepped into the private shower, letting the water cascade over me. It washed away the grime and some of the tension, but not the thoughts circling in my mind.
Once cleaned and changed, I sat at my desk, the towel draped over the back of the chair. I stared at the door, waiting for them to arrive. The quiet moments allowed my thoughts to catch up with me, and the weight of the conversation ahead settled heavily on my shoulder.
Ten minutes after I settled into my chair, Wave, Spark, and Deputy General Tiger entered my office. They moved with purpose, their expressions serious as they took their seats across from me. Wasting no time, I leaned forward and dove straight in.
"Have you found out anything new?" I asked, my tone sharp with expectation.
Wave cleared his throat, folding his hands on the table. "Rowan’s sister is being held in Paradise Coven, under the Deputy Head of the Coven, Cassius Marcel. We have also sent word to withdraw our spy. They should be arriving in two days."
I nodded, taking a moment to process the information. "Good," I said briskly before shifting my focus to Tiger. "What about you?"
Tiger straightened his back, his eyes narrowing slightly as he delivered his report. "Elder Colbat and General Cobble met in secret yesterday."
That caught my attention. I leaned in slightly as he continued.
"The guard I assigned to monitor them informed me that they discussed having someone follow you, and figure out where you’ve been going these past weeks."
I sat up straight, my hands slamming down on the desk with a loud bang. The force rattled the objects on its surface, and the sharp sound echoed through the room.
"Damn it!" I growled, anger flaring hot in my chest.
Spark raised an eyebrow at me, the silent question in his expression clear as day. I huffed in frustration, rubbing my temples as I tried to rein in my temper.
"Set up a pack meeting for first thing tomorrow morning," I ordered, my voice steadier now. "And move it to the royal garden."
They exchanged glances but nodded in agreement.
I let out a breath, leaning back in my chair. "There’s something I need to tell the three of you but trust me, you’ll want a stiff drink for this conversation."
I paced around the royal garden for half an hour after we left the office, sipping whiskey as the tension between Wave, Spark, and Tiger practically crackled in the air. They stood nearby, their gazes heavy on me, but I stayed silent, letting my thoughts swirl.
"You’re driving us crazy," Spark finally scolded, his tone sharp but edged with the care only a brother could give.
I stopped pacing and turned to face them. The weight of my next words settled on my chest, but I exhaled and decided there was no turning back.
"I went to Hanka Island to hide and get some breathing space," I began, my voice even. "That’s where I met Freyr Kayne."
Their eyes widened in shock, and all three stared at me as if I had just sprouted horns.
"Did you say Kayne?" Tiger asked, standing abruptly, his lower lip trembling as though the name itself carried too much weight.
I nodded, lowering myself into a nearby chair. Crossing one leg over the other, I leaned back and met his incredulous gaze.
"You mean the son of the former Vampire Lord?" he pressed, his voice tinged with disbelief.
Wave silently set down the glass he had been holding, while Spark pinched the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes, clearly grappling with my revelation.
"I do," I confirmed, nodding once more.
"And?" Wave asked, his voice calm but tight with curiosity.
I took a sip of whiskey, letting the silence linger for just a moment longer. Then, with a wry smirk, I answered, "And Gale, my beast, is wowed by him."
The reaction was immediate.
"You’re crazy," Spark cursed, throwing his hands up in frustration.
I chuckled dryly and shook my head. "Maybe."
Spark muttered something under his breath, pacing now as I had done earlier, while Tiger and Wave exchanged troubled glances. The truth was out now, and I knew their reactions were just the beginning of the conversation.
"What does this mean?" Wave asked, his voice steady but full of curiosity.
I exhaled sharply, dragging a hand through my hair. "The members of the Bay Shifter Pack have always wanted to go to war with Paradise Coven," I began, my tone bitter. "They’d find any excuse to fault me if they discovered I’d met with a vampire, let alone a Kayne."
Wave and Spark exchanged wary glances, but Tiger stayed focused on me, his brow furrowed.
"What about the Kaynes?" I asked, drawing out the question, the whiskey in my hand warming my palm as I stared at Tiger.
Tiger cleared his throat, his expression tightening. "It’s been rumored," he started cautiously, "that the former Vampire Lord Kayne met with your father, Alpha Stem Tor."
The words hit like a blow to the gut, but I kept my face impassive. "And?" I prompted, my voice low, even as my heart picked up pace.
"No one knows exactly what was discussed during their meeting," Tiger continued, glancing briefly at Wave and Spark, "but a week later, the late Lord Kayne was found dead."
My breath caught for a split second, and I leaned forward, narrowing my eyes at Tiger. "What?"
He nodded grimly. "Freyr was right," I muttered under my breath as the pieces began to fall into place. Freyr had mentioned that his mother, Sierra, had scented my father on Lord Kayne.
"What the hell is going on?" I muttered, my grip tightening on the glass.
I leaned further forward, fixing Tiger with a piercing gaze. "Who gave you this information?"
Tiger hesitated for a moment, his jaw tightening before he replied, "My mother told me before she passed."
My chest felt tight as I processed his words.
"She said the two of them were trying to forge a peace agreement," Tiger added, his voice softer now, "and it involved Hanka Island. But she suspected that some members of the council did not want the idea to ever see the light of day."
The air felt heavy around us as the weight of his revelation sank in. My mind raced, connecting threads of betrayal and conspiracy, but I forced myself to stay composed.
"So, someone on the council sabotaged their plan," I concluded, more to myself than anyone else.
Tiger nodded silently, while Wave and Spark watched me carefully.
"Alpha Tor, why are you telling us about Freyr Kayne?" Spark interjected, his voice sharp and questioning. His eyes narrowed slightly, and then he added with a groan, "And please don’t tell me that’s the reason you were smiling so creepily the other day?"
I froze for a moment, caught off guard. My mind raced back to Freyr, the way we kissed, the passion in the way we held each other, the unspoken bond that still made my chest tighten. A slow heat crept up my neck, and before I could reply, Spark let out a loud curse.
Wave groaned beside him, covering his face with his hand, while Tiger suddenly burst out laughing, the sound echoing in the garden.
"Finally!" Tiger said, his grin is wide and teasing. "Finally, there is going to be some real action in the Bay Shifter Pack. I cannot wait to see Elder Colbat’s reaction to this." His laughter grew louder. "The man’s been so bent on marrying his daughter Aqua off to you, this might just send him into shock!"
Wave chimed in, his voice low and measured. "Well, my sister Flora is sick of Aqua’s scheming." He rolled his eyes. "She keeps plotting, sending people to follow you around and figure out your likes and dislikes. It is pathetic."
I exhaled, my voice steady as I replied, "Well, I do dislike women, and I like Freyr Kayne."
"What?" And the atmosphere in the garden exploded in chaos.
