Chapter 161: YOU DOOMED US ALL
Chapter 161: YOU DOOMED US ALL
{ "We all fear what we do not understand." }
The chill of the mountain air hit me hard as I stepped off the ground, my boots crunching on the rocky path beneath us. Ragar Mountain loomed ahead, its peaks piercing the sky like jagged teeth. The ancient power of this place pulsed through the earth, a quiet hum beneath the surface, and for the second time in my life, I felt the weight of it more than ever.
The air was different here, crisp, sharp, and heavy with the sense that something ancient and powerful watched us. I could feel it in the way the wind whispered through the trees and the quiet that settled over everything. Rou stood beside me, his expression grim, as we both took in the imposing sight before us. Ahead of us, a figure emerged from the shadows, tall, broad-shouldered, his presence like a living embodiment of the mountain itself, the Guardian of Ragar Mountain.
"Alpha To, of Bay Shifter pack and Rou, son and Alpha of the Rougarou," the Guardian’s voice rang out, rich and deep, like the rumble of thunder in the distance. His tone was neither warm nor cold, but somewhere in between, respectful, but with an underlying challenge, as if we had been expected, but not exactly welcomed with open arms.
We both bowed, and I spoke up, "Guardian of the Ragar mountain, we are back to seek some clarification."
The Guardian’s eyes shifted briefly to Rou, who stood silently at my side, his muscles coiled, ready for anything, and after what felt like an eternity of silence, the Guardian finally nodded, a slow, deliberate movement. "Very well. The mountain has sensed your arrival. The Have Cave awaits you. But know this, Alpha Tor: what you seek is already fated."
I nodded, unwilling to speak the words of doubt that flickered across my mind. There was no turning back now. Not after everything we had already endured. I could feel Rou’s gaze on me as we started toward the cave, and for a moment, I could almost hear his thoughts, he was in turmoil about the news of Rolan being alive.
"Stay alert," I said quietly to Rou as we approached the cave.
Rou’s lips twitched, just a small movement, but enough to show his awareness. "I’m always alert," he replied, his voice rough with the weight of what we were about to face.
The Guardian stepped aside as we reached the mouth of the cave, his eyes never leaving us. "Enter," he said simply, his tone holding a finality that made my stomach tighten. As we moved forward, the tunnel opened, revealing the vastness of the chamber before us.
I stopped at the threshold, taking in the sight of the stone altar that stood in the center of the chamber. Surrounding it were ancient markings, carved into the walls, symbols I didn’t fully understand, but I could feel their weight, their meaning. These were the ancestors of the Lycans, the beings who had shaped our world long before any of us had walked it.
I looked over at Rou, who stood silently beside me, his eyes wide with a mixture of awe and wariness.
I closed my eyes for a moment, centering myself, drawing in a slow breath. When I opened them again, I dropped to one knee before the altar, my head bowing low in respect. I wasn’t just acknowledging the space; it was more than that. I was acknowledging those who had come before us, those who had protected our people and shaped the world with their blood, sweat, and sacrifice.
"Ancestors of the Lycans, I stand before you," I said, my voice strong but reverent. The words were ancient, the language of my people, the words that had been passed down through generations. "Your son Tor Gale is back to ask for your guidance. We seek answers that only you can provide. We need to understand what is happening in our world and the forces that are threatening our future."
Rou moved behind me, hesitating for a moment before he, too, knelt. I could feel his respect for the place, even if it made him uneasy. He was more pragmatic than I was, less inclined to lean into the mysticism of our people, but he wasn’t a fool. He knew the weight of the moment, the significance of our actions. "I am here as well, ancestors," Rou spoke softly, his voice carrying a different energy, less formal, more grounded, but still filled with respect. "I have accompanied Alpha Tor to seek answers."
A cold breeze stirred the air around us, a whisper of something ancient brushing against my skin. It wasn’t like the wind on the mountain, nor was it like anything I had ever felt. It was like the breath of the ancestors themselves. For what seemed like an eternity, there was nothing but silence, the kind of silence that made you feel like you were being watched, studied, and tested. Then, slowly, the markings on the walls of the chamber began to glow faintly, a soft, eerie light emanating from the symbols. The light was subtle at first, but then it grew stronger, pulsing in time with the beating of my heart.
"Why are you back here, Lycan," the voice intoned, ancient and powerful. "Your power is unmatched in the world, but what you seek cannot be. You mated with a vampire and put our kind in danger. The one that seeks power already knows this ,as he sensed your mating bond when Freyr Kayne challenged him in Bloodstone Mountain. You have doomed us all."
The words hung in the air like a curse, heavy and undeniable. I felt my heart drop in my chest, and my breath caught somewhere between disbelief and a creeping horror. The ancestors were wise, far wiser than I could ever hope to be, but their words... they didn’t make sense. Kayne, my mate, the one chosen by the Moon Goddess herself- was not a source of doom. We were bound by fate. The Moon Goddess had chosen him for me, and no matter the darkness surrounding us, I believed in that bond. I had to.
I took a step back as if physically distancing myself from the weight of their words might make them less real, less crushing. "No," I whispered, but I wasn’t sure who I was trying to convince, the ancestors or myself. "How could fate be wrong? The Moon Goddess chose Kayne for me," I continued, my voice louder now, shaking with a blend of disbelief and frustration. "How could she have made such a mistake? She doesn’t make mistakes. We were meant to be together; our bond, it’s not a curse. It’s... its fate."
I looked over at Rou, who stood a few steps behind me. I could see the uncertainty in his eyes, the same wariness that I felt gnawing at my gut.
"The Goddess’s will is not wrong, Alpha Tor," the voice of the ancestor intoned, deep and resonant. "But even fate is shaped by choices. Your bond with Kayne is not a curse, but it is part of a greater fear, and that is why we have always delayed the awakening of the Lycan Alpha. The power you hold, combined with the power of your mate, is something that the evil can never get access to. If it does, it will purge darkness to the Paradise Coven and the Bay shifter, and we shall all be doomed to the hell of the evil thirsty creature."
"I decide my fate, and I know there must be a way to defeat evil, "I asserted.
For a long moment, the Haven was silent, eerily so. It felt as though the very air held its breath, waiting. Then, with a sudden brilliance, the entire cave lit up with an ethereal glow, blinding and radiant. The rocks around us shimmered as though they were alive, as if the mountain itself had awakened.
I could barely keep my eyes open against the intensity of the light. I glanced around, feeling the hairs on the back of my neck rise, and watched in stunned awe as the cave above us parted like the heavens themselves, opening to reveal a figure descending from the illuminated void.
I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move.
The figure was a woman, bathed in a light that felt almost divine, her form impossibly graceful as she descended toward us. Her presence seemed to fill the chamber, and every inch of me, every cell in my body, felt the weight of her being. There was no mistaking it; this was no ordinary being.
As she slowly floated down before me, I found myself unable to tear my gaze away from her. She was beautiful, but there was something timeless about her, a deep, ancient power that emanated from her very essence. Her eyes, though filled with infinite wisdom, were filled with something else, an unspoken understanding that I could not yet comprehend.
And then she spoke, her voice like the softest whisper, yet it rang through the chamber like a thunderclap.
"Alpha Lycan Tor, your wisdom awakened me from my sleep."
