Chapter 159: A COMPLEX SITUATION
{ "The best way out is always through."}
I was elbow-deep in requisition forms and regional reports when the knock came—not sharp, not urgent. Just familiar, and the door opened before I could even lift my head. Spark stepped in, carrying a tray that smelled like salvation, something savory and hot, with steam curling into the air. Right behind him was Wave, his mate, arms full of additional dishes and that serene calm he always seemed to carry like a second skin.
I blinked at them, confused for half a second. "You two are organizing a surprise inspection?"
Spark gave me a look. "You’d fail it, judging by how pale you are."
Wave smiled gently and closed the door behind her with her foot. "He’s been holed up since dawn, hasn’t he?"
"Since before," Spark said. "Thought I’d have to pry him out of the garden with a crowbar."
I leaned back in my chair with a soft grunt, letting the weight of the morning settle into my shoulders. "I’m fine," I muttered, though I didn’t even try to make it convincing.
"I know," Spark replied dryly, setting the tray on the edge of my desk. "That’s why we brought reinforcements."
Wave moved to the corner table by the windows, setting out more plates—bread, roasted root vegetables, spiced meat wrapped in leaf bundles, and a strong-smelling tea I immediately recognized as her doing.
"Eat," He said gently, motioning me toward the food without force, just steady warmth. "You don’t need to talk. Just don’t starve yourself while waiting for answers."
Spark nodded toward the table. "We’re eating too. Might as well make it a proper meal. You’re not the only one carrying weight today."
I looked between them, then finally stood with a sigh, letting the work fall away for a moment. The scent of the food hit me again, and I realized just how empty my stomach was.
"Fine," I said, dragging the word out with a half-smile. "But I’m not sharing the liquor."
Wave laughed softly. "I brought enough. Sit down."
We all settled at the small round table in the corner, the sun streaming in through the high windows, casting long beams of light across the wood. For a few minutes, there was only the quiet clink of utensils, the soft murmur of comfort food being passed around. The meal did what I hadn’t expected it to do, it anchored me. We didn’t talk much, just passed plates and nodded at each other in that quiet rhythm only people who’ve known each other too long can fall into. Wave hummed occasionally under her breath, a calming little tune with no words. Spark made sarcastic comments about the blandness of the vegetables but ate twice as much as anyone. By the time I’d finished the liquor and wiped my mouth, I felt more human than I had in days.
Spark leaned back in his chair, arms folded, brow arched like he was done playing nice. "Alright," he said, voice sharp but not unkind. "Out with it."
I blinked at him. "Out with what?"
"You look like you haven’t slept in a week. Don’t give me that ’I’m fine’ routine again. I let it slide this morning, but not now. What happened?"
Wave didn’t say anything, just watched me with that quiet, steady gaze of hers, waiting. I let out a breath and dragged a hand through my hair. I hadn’t meant to spill this. Not yet. Not until I had more to go on. But Spark was right, he always was when it came to reading me.
"Last night... I heard a loud screeching roar from Kayne, Freyr’s beast."
Spark’s expression shifted, the edge of sarcasm melting into something more focused. "Kayne?"
I nodded slowly. "Not at first. At first, it was just rage. Through the bond. Like a storm tearing through my chest. I woke up from it, Gale was already wide awake and clawing. It was bad. I thought something had happened, something I couldn’t reach." I paused, swallowing past the tightness that still tried to rise in my throat. "I couldn’t get through to him. Not through the mating bond. Nothing but silence. I waited. Pushed. Almost tore myself apart trying to feel him."
Spark’s eyes darkened, but he didn’t interrupt.
"And then..." I exhaled, leaning forward and resting my elbows on the table. "Last time, Sierra, Frery’s sealed our mating link with a Vampire Mira bond. The Mira bond stirred. Just faint, like a thread catching wind. And through its Kayne came through. He said they were safe for now. That once they were back in Kayne’s land, he’d contact me properly. They’d escaped Blood Stone Mountain. Dante’s hurt. But they rescued Rolan."
Wave’s lips parted slightly in surprise. "Who the fuck is Rolan?
"Rou’s brother," I responded and nodded. "Kayne didn’t give details. But it was real. Clear. I felt it through every part of the bond. He’s alive. They’re alive."
Spark let out a low breath, raking a hand through his curls. "No wonder you looked like you were about to snap this morning."
"I almost did," I admitted, half a smirk tugging at my mouth. "Gale was ready to tear through the realms to find him. The only thing that held us together was that bond whispering back."
There was a long pause. Wave nodded once, and Spark reached out, placing a hand gently over mine.
"You’re not alone in this," he said softly. "You don’t have to carry it all by yourself."
"I know," I replied, my voice quieter than I meant.
I let the silence linger a moment longer, then leaned forward, resting my forearms on the table, eyes fixed on the empty plate in front of me. "There’s something else," I said, voice low. "Something I didn’t say earlier."
Spark lifted his brow. "Figured there might be." Wave didn’t speak, but his gaze never left mine, steady, patient.
"Blood Stone Mountain..." I started, the name tasting like ash on my tongue. "While Kayne roared, I felt the evil, and it was ancient and alive.
Spark’s expression shifted, sharp now. "Shit. Are you sure?"
I nodded slowly. "Yes, and that is why I sense whatever happened triggered a full beast reaction..." I paused, dragging a hand through my hair. "He didn’t just wake up angry. He roared." I looked up, locking eyes with Spark and then Wave. "I felt it. Through the bond. It wasn’t just fear or pain. It was power. Raw, ancient, and full of fury. Like something had pushed him past the edge and he met it head-on."
The memory of it shivered through me again, like a thunderclap held in my bones. My chest still felt the echo of it, the way the vibration had rattled through the deepest parts of the bond.
"I’ve never felt him like that before," I admitted, softer now. "Not even when we first bonded. It was... consuming. Like if I hadn’t grounded myself, Gale would’ve taken over, and we’d have been sprinting toward that mountain before sunrise."
Wave’s brows furrowed slightly. "And now?"
"Now it’s quiet," I said. "But not calm. Just... waiting. Like something’s been set in motion, and none of us know where it ends yet."
Spark leaned back in his chair with a heavy sigh, rubbing a hand along his jaw. "Well, that’s terrifying."
"Yeah," I murmured. "Tell me about it. " I sat back in my chair, fingers drumming absently on the armrest, letting the weight of the conversation settle in. Spark and Wave were across from me, their expressions serious, their words echoing in my mind.
"It’s complicated, Tor," Spark said, his voice carrying that sharp edge I knew all too well. "This is bigger than just us. Bigger than just the vampires."
I frowned, my gaze narrowing on him. "What are you talking about?"
Spark leaned forward, hands clasped in front of him. "Blood Stone Mountain. The situation there is spreading, and it’s pulling in more than just the vampire factions. The Bay Shifter Pack is feeling it, and so is the Paradise Coven."
I exhaled slowly, my chest tightening. "The evil that resides there is awakened."
"It’s not just the source, Tor. It’s an amplifier," Spark said, his words like ice being shoved down my spine. "It’s spreading like wildfire. The Bay Shifter Pack’s alpha has been on edge for weeks now, and the instability is messing with their instincts. The same goes for the coven. The magic in the air will soon be tainted, and now it sends the vampire to attack the Bay shifter pack and create a war between Paradise Coven and the Bay shifter pack.
Wave, who had been quiet up until now, nodded solemnly, her dark eyes locking with mine. "It’s not just the shifters and the vampire, Tor. The balance of everything is off. That mountain... It’s an anchor for dark magic. It’s bleeding out, and we’re already seeing the effects. This isn’t something we can ignore. If it keeps growing, it will swallow everything in its path."
I ran a hand over my face, feeling the tension building between my brows. "I know. I just never expected it to reach us so soon."
Spark shook his head, the frustration in his voice hard to mask. "The attack by the vampires has already put our people on edge, and since then, everyone is on high alert as they do not know when they will attack again."
Wave’s steady voice cut through the rising storm in my mind. "I agree with Spark."
I exhaled, leaning back in my chair as I stared at the ceiling for a moment, and I turned my gaze back to Spark and Wave, the truth of the situation dawning on me." I need to go back to Ragar mountain, There is something I need to check so that we are prepared to tackle the current situation. "
