Chapter 124: TO TAKE AND GIVE

" The path of the Lycan has already been drawn"}

The scent of salt and battle still clung to me as I stepped into my home, the weight of the night settling into my bones. My body ached, not from wounds, but from exhaustion—the kind that went deeper than flesh, the kind that settled in the soul.

I stripped off my clothes, letting them fall to the floor before stepping into the shower. The water ran hot, scalding even, but I didn’t flinch. I let it wash over me, let it carry away the tension, the blood, the weight of the fight. But it couldn’t wash away the thoughts circling in my head. The vampires. The retreat. The inevitable return. And Rou.

By the time I stepped out, the air in my home had shifted. I could smell them before I saw them.

Spark. Wave. General Tiger. And Ralph.

They had arrived in silence, bringing food as a peace offering—or maybe just an excuse to sit and wait.

I joined them at the table, the warm scent of roasted meat and herbs filling the space, but no one touched their food. Not yet. They were waiting for me. Watching.

The silence stretched, thick and expectant, until I finally leaned back in my chair, exhaling slowly. Then, my gaze settled on Ralph.

"What do you know?" My voice was steady, but the question carried weight.

Ralph met my eyes without hesitation. "Knowing my father, he would never leave you behind. That means he was captured."

I nodded, watching as the others stiffened at his words, their eyes widening.

"Rou pretended to be a guest of Sierra Kayne," I revealed, my tone even. "But Lord Marcel arrested him. Rou assured me he would be safe—said no jail cell could hold a Rogourau down."

At that, Ralph let out a chuckle. "If my father was truly in danger, he would have sent a message to me. But for now? He’s probably enjoying himself in Paradise Coven."

A small smile tugged at my lips, but before I could respond, General Tiger turned to Ralph, his expression serious.

"Can we send a message back to him?"

Ralph stiffened slightly, his jaw tightening before he whispered, "Only the Alpha can send a message to the pack. But..." He hesitated. "I suspect my sister, Rita, could find a way to reach him."

I nodded; my decision was already made. "Then we wait. You will send word when he’s ready. For now, another matter needs your attention."

The room was silent, the weight of my next words pressing down on all of us like a heavy storm cloud. I exhaled slowly, then spoke with the certainty of an Alpha who knew time was slipping away.

"We need to find Althea Gale."

My eyes flickered to me, expressions shifting from confusion to realization. They knew the name. They knew what it meant.

"I know her life is dwindling, and I need to take her to Hanka Island to spend her last days there." My voice was firm, unwavering. "I suggest that Flora and Rita be the ones to go on this mission, but no one can know why. Not yet."

Spark leaned forward slightly, his brows furrowing. Wave exchanged a glance with General Tiger, while Ralph simply listened, his arms crossed.

"We can have Elder Mercury and Crystal guide us," I continued, my mind already working through the steps that needed to be taken. "We’re running out of time, and this needs to be done fast."

Ralph was the first to break the silence. "Tor... you realize what we’re facing? The vampire army is regrouping. If we split our forces now—"

"I know." I cut him off, my tone leaving no room for argument. "I know what’s coming, and I know what we must do. But this?" I let my gaze sweep over them, making sure they understood. "This is just as important. Althea needs to get to Hanka Island. If we wait too long, she won’t make it."

"I shall plan and have them escorted by two secret guards "General Tiger nodded.

I gave a sharp nod. "Good. Make sure you move in silence. No one outside this room can know the truth."

After they all left, I walked to the balcony of my room, the cool night air brushing against my skin as I stared out at the mountain. The stars above offered no comfort, and the distant rustling of the trees did little to soothe the storm raging within me.

"I miss our mate," Gale spoke up, his voice laced with longing.

I could only nod in response, lost in the solace of my thoughts. The bond between us and Frery Kayne tugged painfully at my soul, the ache of separation growing stronger with each passing day. I hated being away from him, hated that duty had forced this distance between us. And worse, I felt the weight of guilt settle heavily on my shoulders—my trip to Paradise Bay had nearly cost the Bay Shifter Pack everything.

I huffed, closing my eyes as the vision of the attack on the beach resurfaced in my mind. The chaos, the bloodshed, the scent of burning wood, and the cries of my people—memories that would haunt me for a long time.

But what twisted the knife deeper was the betrayal. Lily and Samuel Crest. My eyes snapped open, rage simmering beneath my skin. How could they do this? How could Lily, who sat on the Bay Shifter Council, who smiled in my presence and pretended to care, betray us so easily? I had always known Samuel was a crook, a man with no loyalty but to his greed, but Lily...

She had fooled me. She had gathered information, played the role of an ally, and when the time came, she had turned against us. Gale growled lowly in my mind, his anger mirroring my own.

"They will pay," I whispered, my voice dark with promise, no matter what it took, no matter how long it took, I would make them answer for their treachery.

Hours later, I lay sprawled in bed, staring up at the ceiling, willing my body to surrender to sleep. But no matter how much I tried, the rest refused to come. My muscles ached from the shift, from the battle, from the sheer weight of everything that had happened, but the worst ache of all was the one in my chest—the hollow space that only Freyr could fill.

I missed him.

I missed his kisses, the way his lips claimed mine with urgency and devotion. I missed his embraces, the warmth of his body against mine, the way he fit so perfectly into my arms. I missed his presence, his steady strength, the way his mere existence made everything feel lighter, made me feel whole.

Gale let out a restless huff, mirroring my turmoil. I knew he missed Kayne just as much—he had been on edge ever since we parted from them. The bond we shared with our mate pulled and twisted painfully like an open wound refusing to heal.

"I know, Gale," I whispered into the silence, running a hand through my hair. "I miss them too."

But I needed to make this work.

I had a duty to fulfill. I had to return to Hanka Island with Althea and ensure she had a final send-off worthy of the life she had lived. Only then could I finally go after Freyr Kayne.

And when I did, I would introduce him to Bay Shifter Pack—not as a stranger, not as a visitor, but as my mate.

Mine to love.

Mine to protect.

Mine to stand beside as I ruled.

One way or another, I would make sure of it as sleep took over and darkness engulfed me.

The banging on the door jolted me from sleep, and my eyes snapped open. The golden rays of the sun streamed through the windows, casting warm light across the room. I had overslept.

My senses sharpened instantly as I focused on the presence outside. Rita. Flora.

I threw off the covers, jumped out of bed, and grabbed a shirt, slipping it on as I rushed downstairs. In a flash, I was at the door, yanking it open.

Flora wasted no time. "Good morning, Alpha, Rita knows where Althea is and we came in a hurry to tell you after Beta Spark briefed us on the mission this morning "

I turned to Rita, my eyes locking onto hers. "Where?" I demanded.

Rita met my gaze with unwavering certainty. "The caves that lead to Hanka Island. Althea must have known you would search for her, so she sent a message to me. We need to hurry as she is running out of time"

I studied her for a moment, resisting the urge to ask how she received the message. Althea had always been one step ahead. If she had chosen to communicate with Rita, there was a reason.

I nodded; my decision was already made. "Give me a few minutes to take a shower, and we set off for Hanka Island."

"Yes, Alpha," they both responded in unison.
